Bank of Hawaii

I’ve been banking here since I was 12 years old. It’s been my first bank. I went from the minors account to level 1 to level 2 to level 3 Bank Ohana account :) for the most part I’ve had a good experience and everyone is friendly. The actual banking is just ok. I’ve had multiple charges that I had to have reversed. Also I don’t like that they have no sister branches in the mainland…

Back story: I had a loan with a federal credit union and wanted to start auto pay for my loan bills. The federal credit union teller told me I had to go to my bank to ask them what documents were needed and a form to fill out.
I went to the Waialae Branch and asked the teller for help with documents to provide for a personal loan I had with another financial institution. The teller was very friendly and even though he did not know the answer to my situation, he told me he would inquire with his manager. After a short time his manager came to greet me (very professionally, I might add) and she informed me that unfortunately the financial institution that is supposed to provide the form is the federal credit union. She went on to explain exactly how it should work (which is exactly how I originally thought it was supposed to) where I should obtain the form from the credit union and Bank of Hawaii will provide me with a check I can void. She asked if I had a checkbook which I did not at the time so she offered to provide me with starter checks free of charge. I was pleasantly surprised with the level of care in customer service this branch has and am glad it is my home branch.
Now back to the federal credit union…

I think Bank of Hawaii is behind the times in terms of technology, especially their ATMs however, what I like about this particular branch is that it is never crowded in is the right skill to do some banking. Bankers are local and friendly

I don’t care for Bank of Hawaii as a bank. They seem to like to torture customers with unnecessary hassle. (control game). For example, if you have a joint account and want to drop one person’s name from the account, the only way you can do that is if you have a death certificate for that person. If not, you would have to close the whole account, and open a new one. (And if you have auto-​deposits, auto-​debits coming out of that account, you get the fun of notifying all the entities of your change of account).
And I don’t care for how they ask practically every time I make a transaction about my contact information — yes, it’s the same as when the other teller asked me 3 days ago. No, for the 100^th time I don’t want a Hawaiian Miles credit card.
And I had a personal loan with B of H and they were constantly peeking in my credit report bringing my score a little lower. And the teller asked why I was paying over on my loan. Umm, cause I would like to pay it off sooner than the due date, duh.
Those are the negatives about B of H. On the plus side, I like the swiftness of getting to my safety deposit box (better than the slowness of First Hawaiians). I like the many locations and the one’s in the stores open late and on weekends. But basically, I just don’t like this bank. That’s not my bank! (any more)

Convenient location on waialae ave, in the heart of all the little shops and restaurants :). Hard to find street parking at times, I had parked in the paid lot and walked over.

Lines are long and they take awhile to go through. There’s only one teller from regular accounts. They have two tellers for Bankoh ohana and one or two for business accounts. Seems a bit inefficient to allocate the majority of the people to wait longer.

Minu Lee was amazing! New checking, online features, app already set up, and a new credit card to transfer my balance. All in a half hour! She covered every base. Efficient, considerate, and personable. :)

Best bank, friendly staff, they know me so well they dont even have to ask for my id anymore. They give me whatever I want and theyre friendly too.

That’s my bank! This Kaimuki Branch is the branch I visit the most often. Everyone here is friendly. The tellers are very friendly, and the managers are nice and always smiling (unlike FHB across the street). I am satisfied with their customer service. It is usually not too busy here at this branch when compared to other branches I’ve been to in town.
BOH does a good job at having many ATMs around so I could withdraw cash without being charged a fee. I think BOH has the most ATMs out of any branch out here in Hawaii. I am so glad that this branch is located in this area because within walking distance are some good places to eat that only accept cash (Okata Bento, Sushiya).

I have to agree with RG. I had an account there many years ago for two month. It was a nightmare. They always got my accounts screwed up and then I had someone from customer service actually lecture ME. My daughter and her husband recently opened a business and personal account, again same trouble…
Sad for us. No local banking.

That’s my bank! BOH is the best bank in Hawaii. And this branch is no exception. Friendly staff, and they have a parking lot up on Center Street.
It’s just not a big branch or a particularly pretty one.
