Al is great! Very patient! He was able to get me into a great group. we spoke for a while before we met up and he really addressed my needs. I told him but I might be scared of the ocean he took it slow. I stood up on my first time. I feel very confident going back out into the ocean. I can’t wait for our next lesson! After my lesson I looked at a few other reviews and I am thankful I picked Alysha Surf School!

Albert is very thoughtful and helpful for your surf lessons. I made an appointment with him and he called me back explaining about the jellyfish warnings on the beaches. We went the next day. My children (3 of them) were very well taken care of. Albert had the proper shoes for them to surf in and provided one of them a longer sleeve shirt to prevent her arms from chafing more. The 3 athletic teens were able to have as many rides in as they good get. Albert was fantastic and would recommend him with anyone wanting to have surf lessons for their young adult, teen, and tween children. AWESOME!

Such an awesome experience! Would highly recommend Alysha surf school to folks seeking to learn. I would even reach out to them again to improve!
Al and Parry were great teachers. Took a 2 hour lesson @ 7:30am with a group of friends. Maybe ~30 minutes to learn basics, and the remaining time was out catching waves on the water! The school had rash guards and water shoes (a must!). As tourists, this was helpful!
Awesome instructors that have a lot of years surfing, seem to really love the sport, and enjoy teaching others to love it also. Very hospitable and a great local experience overall!

Al is actually continuing this school for his daughter who is currently in nursing school! The teachers were super chill, helpful, and accommodating. We had 6 people total. They made sure that we went surfing when there weren’t too many people out in the water (it was about 10:30) and got everyone to stand up! They also mentioned for $ 25, we could go for a more advanced lesson at Ala Moana. A lot of fun, and highly recommended.

This is our first day in Waikiki and we did the morning lesson at 7:30am. The time was great as there were less people on the beach and in the water. I was very nervous and originally not going to do it and just watch my husband learn to surf. But finally decided that I could give it a try too. The lesson was awesome. Albert was our instructor. He was patient, knowledgeable, funny, very observant and always offering tips on how to improve on my surfing technique.
Although I was very nervous about surfing, Albert was able to make me feel comfortable in the water and on the board. I was able to go out and surf and stand on my first try. «surf» i say very loosely as I don’t want to minimize the real surfers. I was able to go out and surf about 10 times. My husband also had a lot of fun learning to surf.
This is the best deal you can find for a 2 hour lesson that includes about 10 surfs. We highly recommend Alysha Surf School and instructor Albert.

Longer version:
Based on Unilocal reviews, I signed 2-​hour lessons with Al for my daughter (14 yrs old), son (11 yrs old) and myself (my age is too old to share:-). Man, this is the BEST experience ever in Hawaii.
I called Al a week in advance for the reservation. To my surprise, no credit card was asked and everything is in gentleman’s agreement. Al reconfirmed the reservation 24 hrs ahead to the scheduled lesson. You could still reschedule or cancel the lesson without any commitment.
The class started 7:30AM. There was totally 5 persons. My initial concern was whether the water was too cold for kids. It turns out the ocean water is very warm. (Not bathtub warm, but close. Now, you got the idea). Since we started earlier, there was only one group, which is us. After we finished our lessons at 9:30AM, the beach became very crowded, at least another 5 groups or tried to surf in the same area. The surfers were a little bit too close to each other.

AWESOME! My 13 year old daughter enjoyed her surf lessons with Al. They also teach you about safety while surfing. The lesson was 2 hours long which is also a plus. Everyone should give Alysha’s Surf School a try!

I had gone surfing with a friend one time. My friend was teaching me he bad habits to surfing. So I saw that Albert had a cheap deal. He worked with my schedule. He is very organized. He talked me through everything I was about to do along with what I was doing. I didn’t just feel like a number getting a surf lesson being a tourist area. He also was teaching me how to see the different waves. He also went out of his way to help me know what surf board I should buy and a great place to buy it. When friends and family come to visit I will definitely recommend his surf lesson for I know they will really learn something and have fun doing it.

Alyssa surf School is a great school to learn how to surf, Al is a Hawaii grown surfer with years of experience and Aloha spirit. He is a very informative teacher he explains what it takes to be a safe surfer starting off with a safe spot to learn on the beach and time to be there to beat the crowd. He also does a great job on explaining the basics to get you standing and catching a wave on your first day surfing. He did a fantastic job with my 6yr old son, my son knows how to pop up and ride a wave all from the experience Al gave him. We will be taking more lessons with Al to gain more knowledge on the very addictive hobby surfing. Thanks Al for your outstanding Aloha spirit can’t wait for our next lesson. Mahalo. I came in with no experience and dragged along a group of friends. Many of us had zero to little experience surfing, but Al took care of us the entire lesson. Importantly, we stood up! I’m 45 and had my first surfing lesson here. What a fantastic experience! Albert was the best! He taught it so easily, even a child could do it. Very patient, kind and experienced. There is no other place to learn how to surf! The location he chooses is fantastic. Great waves for beginners. I rode my first wave a good 60 meters plus. This was my first time in Hawaii and first time ever to surf! I was nervous to surf due to always being afraid of the creatures in the ocean. The instructors kept me at total ease and I had an amazing time. I was able to get up on my board the first try and even caught my own wave!!! If I ever go back to HI, I WILL be a repeat customer!!!

We were an hour late due to traffic coming into town and he let us start the lesson as soon as we got there which was really nice of him. He then gave us a ride home after the lesson and took us to try to huli chicken. I have taken further lessons with Al and he is very positive trying to improve my stance on the board. After I caught a huge wave I was finished for the day because I was so tired! I highly recommend Al and his pricing is ideal.

I took lessons with Al and Perry a few days ago with my cousins and my wife. All I can say is we had a blast with our instructors! Although the waves were small, we still were able to catch many waves and I learned a lot from Al. He taught me all the basics, some tricks to help me get better and I was able to catch a few waves without him even pushing me! I took lessons before many years ago, but I can say Al is the best and a really cool guy! Take lessons from him! You won’t be disappointed!

This is the best surfing experience for beginners or anyone who wants to experience the waves with a relaxed, knowledgable and fun instructor! I had sworn off of surfing due to some really bad experiences in the past, but Al reassured me that it was going to be ok — and he was right!
Two lessons later, and I am HOOKED! He is a patient teacher and knows the water and the waves really well. Can’t wait to come back to Waikiki and do this again.

Took my first surf lesson today with Al and it was a great experience. This is probably the best deal you will find on Waikiki Beach for 2 hours of lesson. He went over safety and basic techniques on the beach first. We were by ourselves in a quiet spot in the water which was nice. I was able to stand up on my second try, It was actually a lot easier than I thought it’d be! I will be back for more lessons and will definitely recommend Al.
I took some more lessons with Al after my initial one. He gave great one on one instruction and I actually ended up getting a private lesson for $ 35 because the other person cancelled. Can’t beat that deal! I’d definitely come back for more next time I’m in Hawaii! Thanks Al!

For all levels, surfing with Al is a blast. He is incredibly patient and knowledgable, and immediately puts everyone at ease in the water. I have taken a couple group lessons with Al and am amazed how he can customize the lesson to fit each student’s expertise. He is great with first timers, and usually everyone is standing on their first try! He picks the prime spots and prime time, so you consistently get good waves without the crowd. I definitely recommend this surf school!

Amazing surf lessons with Al! We came with a group of 5 girls and Al made sure we were all prepared for our first wave. We practiced our stance and he guided us through multiple ways to stand up steady on the board. When we got out into the water we all got up on our first try! He made sure that we all got great waves and were able to capture some footage on our go pro. I would definitely recommend surf instruction with Alysha’s Surf School for anyone wanting to get personalized and energetic lessons!

Amazing experience! I went on a first time surfing lesson with 3 friends. Al went over all the techniques for paddling out and surfing on land before we got in the water. Once out, he got us up and surfing right away. He would push us with the waves to help us stand up and yell out instructions as we caught the surf. All of us got up on the first try!
Al took us out in the early morning so we could beat the crowds. We had a perfect surfing spot all to ourselves.
Overall, I would highly recommend taking lessons from Al!

Before Albert, I’ve always thought that surfing is the last thing I’d be capable of doing. The boyfriend and I booked an hour session with Albert for the next morning and Al was able to schedule us in immediately (unlike most other surf schools). He picked us up from the hotel the next morning and brought us to a less crowded beach, which is essential for beginners since you don’t want to be crashing into everyone. He gave us the proper gear and prepped us with how to get on the board, how to properly fall off the board, how to paddle, etc. The great thing about Al is that his main focus is safety. Safety, safety, safety. He thoroughly explains every step and the reasoning behind it all so that you understand how surfing actually works. Al’s very passionate about surfing and you can definitely sense it and you can’t help but let it rub off on you too! We got out on the waves soon afterwards and crazy enough, we were both able to stand for a couple seconds on our first try! The adrenaline rush was incredible. Al really tried to get us the best waves possible and by the end of the hour — which went by way too quickly — we were practically pros… okay, not really, but we became much more consistent and gained much more confidence. We had another engagement right after the hour was up, and Al offered to drive us over as well! All around it was a magical time and Al made it so easy for us. Next time, we’d love to come back but book a two hour session instead of one! Definitely give him a shot :) you won’t regret it! Thanks, Al!

100 000 000% the ONLY place I would ever consider taking a surf lesson at– and I’m *from* Hawai’i. I tell anyone I know who visits Hawai’i to only go to Alysha’s! And I tell my friends who live on Oahu who don’t know how to surf to only go to Alysha’s. It doesn’t get any better than this, and Al is among my favorite people ever.

I am very small Asian girl with no exercise. Decided to try surfing on my vacation in Hawaii. Choosing alysha surf school is one of my great choice I made here. Lesson was very good. I was little bit scared that I cannot surf but it turned out that was no problem. I had very awesome experience. I was be able to stand on my board since the beginning of my class.
The instructor, perry, was good and experienced in surfing. Give good advices and instructions. He helped us catches waves and be able to stand on my board. Feel safe! :D

Had my first-​ever surf lesson today and chose Alysha Surf School. My choice turned out to be a great one: I had a great and safe first time surfing and was up and standing faster than I had imagined!
The spot we met was easy to reach right around Waikik. I was given all the equipment I need; a surf board appropriate for my size, rash guard against the sun, and special reef shoes. After some warm-​up, safety instructions, and dry practice on the beach we went right into the water. Our lesson was early in the day, so we had pretty much all the waves we could ask for to us.
Our instructor for the day was Perry and he certainly knows his stuff. He made sure to lay a solid foundation in paddling and safety and still we came to the fun part fast enough. The fun part is riding waves of course and there was a lot of that! Another girl in my group, a beginner as well, was up and standing on her first wave and rode it half the way to the beach with Perry’s guidance. For me it didn’t take much longer than that and I had a lot of fun. Looking forward to surfing more.
All in all a great experience. And unbeatable in terms of value-​for-​money if you compare it with the prices you typically see around Waikiki!

Al’s surf lesson was a great introduction to the ocean and to Hawaiian culture. I’ll admit I was nervous and not the most athletic. This class started with a lesson on everything you need to know about safety, the ocean and how to have fun. Everything was provided including boards, shoes and rash guards. By the end of class I picked up plenty of tips and I was riding waves. I will be taking classes in the future with Al and will be inviting my friends who will visit along with me.

Al you are a champion and a true gentleman, the lesson was fantastic, his classes were really small (the other two didn’t turn up so it was just me) and they are only $ 35 I had never surfed before and as a beginner I was not sure what to expect. Al coached me through the basics and had me catching small waves in a matter of minutes of being out in the water. The long board was great and helped so much with my balance I actually didn’t even fall off on the first few tries, Al said that he has been surfing all his life and has nearly 20 years experience in teaching and I must say it really showed. I was very fortunate that his classes are small and the other two people didn’t show up, I had a one on one session with Al and within 1 hour he had me in a more advanced area catching bigger waves. It was amazing and such an awesome way to finish my trip. Thank You so much again and I HIGHLY recommend his lessons to any first timers.

Al knows surfing. He was really good at tailoring his instruction to each individual and knows how to give you the right amount of information without overwhelming the audience.
I had taken another surf lesson before but what made Al stand out was his commitment to making sure that his students have a strong foundations of basic concepts so that they can excel later as they develop their surfing ability.

What an amazing experience! As my first official surf lesson, I honestly didn’t know what to expect — kinda thought I’d be given some pointers and left to flail around in the ocean but I was so very very wrong! Al is very much invested in his students and giving them the surf experience as well as basic knowledge to develop skills further. He was extremely methodical and explained everything in a way that was intuitive and easy to follow. Plus he had great energy and enthusiasm! I trusted him completely letting him tell me what time the surfing was best and where to go. We beat the crowds, stayed safe, and I was able to ride a bunch of waves! I will always have this wonderful memory thanks to Al. I would highly highly highly recommend you book him for yourself, your friends, your family — everyone should learn from him!

Took my son here to get a surf lesson from Al. He was absolutely awesome, very very experienced and knew exactly what he was doing. He was flexible with the timeframe and will give you best options that will maximize the amount of waves you can catch in a single session. My son had a wonderful time and after seeing other instructors I know I made the right decision by going with Al. Everything about our interaction was smooth and he really helped my son feel comfortable out in the water.
Next time I return to honolulu I will definitely go with him again.

My daughter has been bugging me to find someone who could teach her how to surf for the past two years. After researching online I decided to go with Alysha’s surf school because of the great reviews. I booked lessons for my daughter and thought I’d give it a try too.
Al made sure we warmed up and started off with the beach lessons which consist of how to line up you body and placement of your arms and feet. He made sure we were well informed about being safe before we headed out into the ocean.
You can tell that Al loves what he does because of his enthusiasm and passion. He has a great personality and make you laugh and have a good time.
My daughter went first and I couldn’t believe that she caught her first wave and made it looked so effortless. It was my turn and I was getting nervous but Al gave me the step by step run down and before I knew it I was up and riding my first wave. What an awesome feeling it was to be gliding on the water! We will definitely call him up for more lessons.

You can’t get a better surf coach than Al! He knows his stuff. I don’t write reviews, but I just had a lesson with him and had to write one because he’s so good! I’ve had some lessons before with different people and went out with friends but I couldn’t stand up and left exhausted without riding any waves.
I ended up joining some friends for a group lesson with Al and was blown away by first, being able to actually stand and ride a wave and second, his teaching style and how knowledgeable he is and open to teaching. He stresses safety and I felt super comfortable the entire time. He actually wants you to learn and gets excited when you catch a wave. GREAT TEACHER! I don’t use caps often, but seriously he is a phenomenal teacher that wants to see you improve and is clearly passionate about surfing plus he’s hella good. You can tell he’s there to teach and he takes it seriously. He gave us tips for each wave, what to do each time that it actually seems easy (except the paddling part that’s always hard). For each lesson he matches the location and boards with our skill level. He got me hooked on it that I even bought my own board now and some of my other friends are taking lessons. Totally amazing teacher, highly recommend!!!

Al was awesome. My friend booked our lesson and I nervously went along for the ride! Al picked us up and we went to the beach, meeting up with a few other folks and Al’s co-​instructor. We got a good, thorough safety lesson, which I appreciated, and Al had rash guards and reef shoes for everyone.
The ocean makes me seriously nervous, and Al picked up on that, dividing the group into the more adventuresome and super beginner… and he taught the beginners. He was so helpful, so thorough, and made the whole experience REALLY awesome! And I think the price was REALLY-​REALLY reasonable, especially since my friend has taken multiple lessons around town, and says Al is the best!

Awesome Experience with Al,(who is a local). I had a semi-​private lesson with my boyfriend for $ 70 PP. He was nice enough to recommend us to go to an ABC store to buy a waterproof disposable camera instead of charging us an extra $ 30 each for photos. He also taught us where to stand to take photos of the person riding the wave. He was He had good energy and a lot of patients and was very encouraging. He picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel as well. He taught everything step by step and made sure you felt comfortable throughout the lesson. Overall great first time experience surfing!

I’ve had two lessons with Al and they have both been phenomenal! This trip, I was only in Honolulu for 48 hours, and he worked around my tight schedule to fit my lesson in! Both times I’ve taken lessons, he and his co-​instructors have gone above and beyond to give great instruction and a great time! They are professional, friendly, and insist on safety at all times. This was the absolute highlight of both my trips and I will definitely be calling to schedule another lesson next time I come out!
