Blech. Small dark neighborhood bar. It is occupied by regulars. And that’s how they want it. A bunch of fifty somethings there for their«night out» most recently I was there with some regulars so bartenders were friendly and patrons were pleasant. However I that has not been the case the multiple times I have come in with outsiders. The Beer of the Month on the board was Miller Lite, um, what? While I appreciated the $ 1.7512oz draughts I chuckled at the thought of Miller Lite being a beer of the month. If friends are meeting there I’ll go, but you’ll never hear me suggest it.

I’m a little embarrassed to be reviewing this place, but the truth is I’ve been coming here for over 10 years. It’s basically a local dive bar. The beer selection is better than it used to be but still nowhere near what I’d consider great. The mixed drinks are strong though. The burgers used to be amazing. It’s been a few years since I’ve had one. I heard they are still good. The bartenders are always friendly. Every now and then a little slow but nothing major. When I get drunk and play Paula Abdul on the jukebox people don’t fight me or give me the evil eye. I’d say that’s a friendly crowd.

I really should have taken some pix but it was later in the night and honestly I was exhausted. The crowd is diverse and it is a little loud in there but not that bad. Most of my group stuck to drinking Two Hearted Ale. 2 people had a Stella and it was served in proper glassware. One had a Long Island and said it was nice and strong. Their bar is pretty decently stocked. People were pretty friendly, the bar staff and the patrons. They have a pool table and a jukebox that is digital. It also doubles as a photo booth! Most of my friends that had been there before never noticed it. They have a little décor that is prohibition style and a headline stating Prohibition is Over! I thought that was pretty cute. The ceiling is tin and stamped so therefore the bar name. My friend said they have some bar food but we came when the kitchen was closed up. He said the burgers are really good.

As far as south suburban Chicago bars go, Tin Ceiling isn’t really one of the better ones. The draft beer selection is quite good, including Miller Lite, Budweiser, three different Goose Island beers, Stella Artois, Guinness, and Blue Moon, but the bartenders don’t actually know how to pour a Guinness, so they lose points for that. On the flip side. I do find the staff there to be very friendly, at least. The crowd are generally typical middle agers, all in leather and talking way louder than they need to. There is an open mic night every other Saturday, which is hosted by a good local singer/songwriter. Unfortunately, the majority of the crowd aren’t really there for the music so I can’t recommend it to folks looking for someplace to play. The crowd is a bit too obnoxious and the inability to pour a Guinness makes the beer selection seem less awesome. Still, it is at least a decent dive bar and you could do much worse when it comes to bars in the area.

Tin Ceiling is the only way to go if you find yourself in Homewood. 20 to 40 crowd, cheap beers and pool tables. AND, a TINCEILING!
