I picked up takeout from Gu Gu on Thursday night after a day of double workouts at Equinox. I felt I was deserving of this extravagant treat and had been wanting to try Gu Gu for a while — ok, for about a year, ha. I ordered the following: Tuna roll(x2) Yellowtail roll Rainbow roll(without salmon) Each roll was phenomenal. The cost of the rolls is cheaper than at Bistro Miyoda(another favorite of mine for mid-week sushi) and the rolls are larger with HUGE chunks of high quality fish. When I order from Bistro Miyoua, there are the teensiest tiniest pieces of fish and teeny tiny roll slices. Gu Gu out performed Bistro Miyoda 10 fold. 10⁄10 no complaints on the food service, quality and taste. Minus points for packaging my sushi in a styrofoam container(how do they still make these anymore?!) Sorry guys, but yes, I do care about our environment. But points were earned back since they quoted my pick up time for 20 minutes and it was ready and waiting for me when I arrived. Quickest pickup experience ever! I’m coming back for you Gu Gu.

I really liked this place. My friends and I had an awesome experience. We have been searching for a sushi spot we could frequent, and this one has made the list. They have a crazy selection of rolls, and a lot of them are really tasty. You really have to know what to order because it can be overwhelming to review that huge menu, but they have something for everyone. We really like the raw fish rolls that don’t have a lot of sauces or crazy ingredients, and showcase the fish. We asked our server to make some recommendations, and we were happy with the suggestions made. Our faves were the laker roll, the ichiban, and Godzilla rolls. We also got other yummy rolls, and they were all great. They didn’t have a lot of sauces, spices, or crazy ingredients, but that’s exactly what we wanted. Our server was Alex, and he was awesome. It did take a while to get our food, but we assume that the kitchen was backed up or something. We were starving once it came out, and we went to town on our rolls. I’ve noticed people list this restaurant being Korean-owned as being an issue. Yes, this place is Korean-owned, but that shouldn’t matter. The food is good, and that’s what’s important. It’s a little pricey, but no more than all the other sushi joints in town. In short, we enjoyed ourselves and will totally be back.

I used to be a frequent customer of Gu Gu until I moved out of the area. We used to love it but we slowly started to realize there is far better in the south bay. It will always be one of my go-to places but one of my last experiences rubbed me the wrong way. My girlfriend got her entire meal, waited, then ate and FINISHED her whole meal before I got my food. Took at least 45 minutes, and it was a slow week night. Still three stars for food quality, but customer service has fallen a bit short.

We’ve tried this place a dozen times and they’ve really gone down hill. The tuna sushi was tough to eat and the service was horrible. Took too long to even get menus and we were one of two tables seated. We asked for water and edamame that we never received. When I mentioned the tuna was tough she took my plate like I was going to get new sushi. Never came. It will be our last experience at Gu Gu.

Came here for a last minute sushi stop. Have to say the fish was extremely fresh and the rolls were delicious. Their crispy rice was intense, but also yummy. I could have eaten so much more of their Ono if I had more room in my belly. Definitely coming back to try more of their rolls! Staff was really friendly and the food came out at a nice steady pace.

Korean-owned. Not really Japanese… Variety of rolls(mostly rolls) on the menu — good for Americanized taste buds. OK service. However, it takes long for food to come out.(We ordered about 5 rolls and it probably took about 30 minutes.) I guess it would be good to go if you are not super hungry and have a good conversation partner :)

It’s times like this I wish there was a ½ star option. I’ve been here before and the service was fine, pretty good even. After not been back here for several months, I asked my boyfriend to have nice date night at GuGu Sushi. Big mistake. Not only were we surrounded by plate banging kids and their inept parents, but our server, I’ll just call her Ms. Get-the-Fuck-Outta-My-Restaurant, totally neglected us. We ordered edamame. It took FOREVER to even get it. Like, asked three separate times forever to get it. You would think they were getting it from a damn edamame plantation in Okinawa. We looked around and saw that everyone that had come in after us was halfway done with their meals. I was already annoyed, and I’ve got Ling-Ling and her kids screaming at the top of their lungs and our server could care less if we ate or not. It wasn’t until I asked her to charge us for our drinks and cancel our food that she stepped her game up. No explanation. Just a quick, «It’s already ready.» Which it wasn’t. But whatever. TL:DR — Horrendous service. Food was still delicious. P. S. Get the Hot Night.

We live two block away and Gu Gu Sushi is our favorite sushi restaurant. Sure, there is the convenience factor but we really do think the sushi is fresher and the rolls are tastier and healthier. Staff is friendly. Prices are usually reasonable. Happy hour prices are lower for sushi but we rarely benefit as the rolls are super enticing. The fish is fresh and well portioned. They have the right amount of heat with sauces. Great rice — much more authentic than the neighborhood competitor which has wet rice.

I’ve been to a lot of sushi places in my day and this one takes the cake. It’s fairly inexpensive and it the highest quality sushi in my opinion. I’m so grateful for sushi like this. He’s like the Jiro of Hermosa Beach. If you love sushi you should know who Jiro is. Everything he makes is super fresh and tasty! Like I said before, it’s an incredible experience from start to finish! It’s kind of a hole in the wall, so don’t blink or you’ll miss it! I urge you to go try it out and experience perfect sushi for yourself! You will be a changed person!

My go-to sushi place! Always delicious, always friendly. Large selection of rolls, we love trying something new or off the specials board and are never disappointed! Favorite rolls: 350Z, Hot Night, and tempora cali(they don’t fry the whole roll, but just a piece to place on top — keeps the roll fresh with a nice crunch).

Restaurant put us in table with no overhead light. Server said light was faulty so they took it out. At 7:00pm the restaurant was low lit and at our table, we couldn’t read the menu. We tried using the iPhone flashlight then decided to leave, thinking eating in the dark with our guests was not convenient. We were a group of 4. So much for that restaurant and customer service.

Coworker and I dropped by for lunch recently. Air conditioner repairmen were working in the main dining room. I was surprised the restaurant didn’t close for this. We sat at the counter. The sushi chef seemed nice enough until it came time to order. I told him I wanted Lunch Special #4. He had no idea what I was talking about. He asked me what was included in Lunch Special #4 so I told him. He still couldn’t figure it out. Seriously? A waitress arrived to assess what was apparently a very complicated situation… Waitress explained to the sushi chef(in Korean) and off they went to prepare our food, which was just fine. Not worth the price for awkward, misinformed staff and mediocre food. Bye bye Yu Yu.

Came in here and asked the sushi chef which lunch special he recommended. The Sushi Combo, option B was the dish to order for sure. Reasonably priced @ $ 10.99 you really got a nice plate of sashimi and a delicious spicy tuna roll. Also comes with a soup choice. Group B on the menu consists of about 12 different kinds of protein served sashimi style. You get a chef’s choice of 5 of them with the lunch special. Highlight for me would have to be the YellowTail; fresh, coconut-like sweetness, really nicely cut piece of fish. Mackerel was a high note, a tuna/sardine tasting fish & great tasting on it’s own. Dipping in the soy & wasabi was just an after thought. Spicy tuna roll was tasty & fresh, wasn’t too much on the spicy side though, mushy consistency. Only 2 other customers at the sushi bar, got attentive service. Would definitely come back, the last two pages on the menu listed about 40 or so different rolls.

I have yet to find a better sushi spot in the South Bay. The Sunset Roll is my favorite! The portions are big, the price is affordable, the sushi is tasty and the staff are helpful & friendly.

Excellent sushi. I’ve been to over 30 different sushi bars and restaurants in LA and this one might be the best. Don’t try to order anything fancy or «authentic». Go for the popular rolls. I’m sure your sever will be happy to point you in the right direction. Sake is decently strong as well!

First, the sushi chef was very nice. Reading through the reviews, they are either super awesome or super not. So since I wanted to try a new sushi place, I thought it would be good time to hope for the super awesome side of the reviews. I think if you order all the special rolls, you will leave satisfied since all it is is a bunch of hokey pokey imitation crab salad, sauce, and something deep fried. I didn’t do that and was sorely wishing I never made this poor foodie decision. I ordered +Albacore in Ponzu Garlic Sauce: the description sounded yummy, but it came out super salty and it was my bad for thinking the albacore would come out moist. Super dried out fish. It was expensive for such a poorly executed dish. +Deep fried(DF) Tuna on crispy rice: This was so wrong on so many levels. I was expecting a crispy rice type of deal but it was a tempura dipped rice. I would say the spicy tuna was good, I just picked out the spicy tuna. Again, expensive. +Baked Mussels: I KNEW it would come out awful because they MICROWAVE the mussels & then bake it. This is so gross to me because what you end up is a piece of rubber with some japanese mayo sauce on it. What the heck? +Unagi: Delicious —– This was such an awkward experience, I left feeling dirty & totally unsatisfied. It was a really expensive meal for being super blah. —- The sushi chef was very nice and proud of his food. Extra star for enthusiasm. Hermosa sushi goers must have some different experiences… because I was dumbfounded with all the positive reviews. I suppose every experience is different. Won’t be back.

Don’t sit at a table, the service is horrendous. So incredibly slow, and you don’t get your food for a ridiculously long time. Sitting at the sushi bar, you get way better service and they’re way more attentive. This experience right now actually tempts me not to come back, as when I inquired about our food after waiting for 30+ minutes, the server, instead of apologizing, rudely said that«it has NOT been that long.»

Local spot, a kind of «hole in the wall» for Hermosa/Redondo area. Great specialty rolls. I get the time bomb roll once a week(crab, spicy tuna, and avocado on the inside, salmon and lemon wedge on the top!), I also love the baked salmon and lion king roll. Sashimi plate was also tasty. Definitely my favorite local spot! :D Bunch of cool looking flaming rolls!
