Jose just finished our deck and fence and I can’t say enough good things about his work. Jose cares about a job well done and truly enjoys the work.
From the very first meeting, Jose was thorough and detailed. Some of the others who came out to quote were asking us whether we wanted oil or water-​based stain. Jose instead tested our deck, showed us that the previous coat was water-​based and described why that meant future work had to all be water-​based. He showed us a bunch of samples for colors and walked us through the whole process. His pricing was reasonable – not the lowest but not the highest either. Given the scope of our project, I feel we got a very fair deal.
He showed up promptly on each working day and worked very hard each day. The sanding and prep work he did on our deck exceed our expectations in every way. We can walk barefoot now on the deck and it’s incredibly smooth.
It took a few different tries to get a color that was a close match to what we were looking for. We were willing to settle for something pretty close, but Jose could tell that we really wanted it a shade darker so he took another trip, custom mixed another color and did another sample area just to ensure we would be happy with the final product. It came out beautifully because of his extra patience and not rushing the work.
In every way, Jose is an expert craftsman and a professional. His work is first class and he has our highest recommendation.

We are thrilled with our experience working with Deck Preservation and the owner, Jose. Jose was very responsive and got back to me promptly after my first voicemail. He was able to get out quickly for an estimate, and the whole process went smoothly. He presented all my options, explained everything, and provided a detailed breakdown for the estimate. I could tell he is a true professional who takes pride in his work. He was able to schedule the job for the next week, even moving things around a bit due to getting some rain. The end result is a beautiful refinished deck, retouched railings, and refinished lattice. He pays a lot of attention to detail, and he took his time to make sure it was perfect. Also, I want to add that he’s just a super nice guy– I had a separate small painting project that he helped me with, and my 4 year old talked his ear off and he couldn’t have been nicer about it. We will definitely hire him again.

We renew the deck one week ago, Jose gave us a lot of professional explain before project, and more details about what to do. He is on time and fast respond, we are very lucky to get help from Deck Preservation, we save a lot of time, and got a beautiful deck. We gave a 5 start satisfied to Jose’s work!

In addition to that, he is a wonderful person and so nice to have around (through he works at lightening speed!) and he is truly both a craftsman and and artisan. And his prices are so reasonable.

Jose was absolutely great. He refinished our deck and front staircase. When he first came to quote the job, he cleaned up the wood to see what he was dealing with before quoting (the previous contractor did no such thing). When it came to doing the work, he and his team had to move through our house (no other access to the deck) and kept everything very clean and professional. The work itself was very good — excellent — it’s as if we have brand new stairs and deck. There were some spots on the steps that needed to be touched up because we covered it with paper in order to walk the steps, and he came back a couple days later and took care of it completely. Would definitely work with Jose again.
P. S. When he came back to do the touch up work, he even cleaned up a bunch of trash that had fallen down our hill after the heavy winds from the evening before. I was really not looking forward to cleaning that up, and he took care of without even telling us. Amazing service… thanks Jose!

Jose was great to work with! Our deck was a mess and he made the deck and the deck furniture look fantastic. He was very responsive and showed up when he said he would and completed the work on time and within the budget. He was even willing to work with our large german shepherd in the back with him. Hard to find guys like this! We highly recommend Jose and his team. :-)

Jose and his crew did a great job with our redwood deck. It was fading and needed new stain. He gave a very reasonable quote compared to his competitor and did the job in two days, including cleaning, sanding, and staining. Afterwards we had some minor concerns with the deck and he came over and fixed it right away. Jose is easy to work with and I would use him again when our deck needs staining again.

We had a 25 year old redwood deck that had never been sealed. All the years of fog in the Oakland Hills took its toll. The deck was so faded and lifeless that I wasn’t sure if it really could be refinished. I called Jose at Deck Preservation and he came over and looked at it. I was pretty surprised when he said that he could refinish and seal it no problem. He was very accommodating with our schedule and picked a date for the job that worked for us.
On the first visit he power washed the whole thing. A warm tone reappeared in the old wood. He came back a few days later to allow the wood to dry completely. He asked me to look at photos to choose a finish color I wanted. I wasn’t completely happy with any of the colors in the pictures so I described to him what I wanted: Not too red, not too light, not too dark. He completely understood what I wanted and mixed a custom color for me. In the second and final visit, he sanded the whole deck, then painted it with the sealer. I should mention that we had a lattice on one side of the deck which we had added, then removed in order to clear the deck for his work. He remembered that the lattice had been there and insisted on treating it as well as the deck because he wanted everything to look as good as possible. He went and got the lattice where we had stored it, brought it out to the deck, and gave it the full treatment along with the rest of the deck, even though we had not asked him to do this.
The result was astounding. I won’t say it looks like new, but it strongly reminds me of the way the deck looked when it was new. The color is perfect, just what I had described to him. The wood grain shows through but the imperfections are covered up. The deck is once again warm and inviting. When we water the plants, the water pools up and stays on the surface, repelled by the sealant. Everything has been sanded smooth and is beautiful to look at. He paid a lot of attention to the details of sanding and staining small areas, such as the railings and the space in between.
I would also like to mention that Jose and his assistant are a pleasure to work with. They show up when they say they will and complete the work. They also covered all the areas inside the house where they needed to walk to get to the deck and then left the place spotless. I still can’t believe that after all this time we have a new looking deck at a fraction of the cost.

Deck Preservation is the go to place to get your deck back up to working condition. Our deck had not been taken care of in the last 12 years and you could really see that it needed some major work. After contacting a couple different companies, I hired Jose to do the job. Jose and his team did a fantastic job in making the deck look presentable again. as in presentable, I mean it looked like a new deck had been installed even though it was over 25 years old. The process included stripping the old stain, sanding everything down to make all the splinters go away and then applying the new stain. Jose was easy to work with, honest and answered most of my questions before I even asked! We have received many complements on the deck. I highly recommend Deck Preservation if you need any kind of work done on your deck. Thanks Jose!!!

Jose did a great job on our deck; he used the stain we wanted (Cabot SPF) after doing his research on the product; he explained the process (mild chemical removal of old stain, rinse, allowing the deck to dry out (2 days), sanding without gouging the wood, and finally applying the stain on a cool cloudy day to prevent the stain from drying too quickly. Great job Jose, and his assistant!

I highly recommend this company. My expectations were exceeded.
Jose and his team tackled our deck that was in bad shape. It had 3 different colors of stain (long story) and hadn’t been up kept much in the last couple of years.
They made it look better than new. Truly. We improved upon the original design, including concealing a sunshade seam, replacing harmful particle board that had been used to hold the sunshade in place with a more effective technique, drilling conspicuous holes in the deck to allow for drip systems, and more. The work itself is beautiful. It’s clear that he not only uses quality products, but is very knowledgeable and can be trusted as a project adviser. Jose possesses a great balance of listening, as well as advising.
He did a good job of setting my expectations– which they far exceeded. I’m so pleased and happy to refer them to others in need of quality deck restoration work.
Caution: Be open to project changes when partnering with DP&P or any restoration company. Jose discovered rot and it understandably changed the original quote. The overall price was more than fair for all the work they completed.

We had several people come out and give us quotes to stain our newly built deck. Of all the companies Deck Preservation was the most impressive. Jose really knows decks. He actually said the deck was HIS while he was working on it! LOL. Anyways, he gave us several samples of colors and options for treatments. He is extremely knowledgable about wood and treatments. His pricing is also very fair. Looks like Jose will be owning our deck every two years when it’s time to restain as we will only be using Deck Preservation for all our future deck maintenance.

I wholeheartedly recommend Jose Loera’s «Deck Preservation and Painting.» Jose is highly skilled and a great listener/​communicator. I also appreciate the fact that he did the work himself so that nothing got lost in translation from contractor to worker.
The results are beautiful. He repaired, cleaned, sanded, and preserved my front steps and back deck. As for the stain color, he combined three colors to create a tone that is not only beautiful in-​and-​of itself, but also compliments the house’s cedar shingle siding. All-​in-​all he was dealing with three different types of wood, all of which take stain differently.

It really is all about «looking good,» isn’t it? With the help of Deck Preservation, looking good comes in two ways.
Our double tiered redwood deck was rough, weathered, dry, and grey. Not a pretty sight and certainly not to be walked upon with bare feet. Jose, the personable and very knowledgeable owner of DP, walked me through the process of what it would take to restore our deck. He demo’d the cleaning process on a small area of the deck, assured me that how he sanded would not abuse the wood, thoroughly discussed stain options so I was involved in choosing the stain after seeing samples of many combinations, and left me with no doubt that he was committed to me being happy with the work he would do. And when I say «work,» Jose works in every sense of the word… except to him, it is not work because he enjoys what he does so much. After four days of «enjoyment,» my deck is looking good.
The second way DP makes «looking good» happen? DP makes me look good for choosing them. Oh, and one more way… My tan should be looking good from spending more time now on my beautiful deck (bare feet now an option)!

You should have seen this fence and deck before Jose started — it was awful. Unfortunately I had not maintained my redwood deck and fence, and by the time Jose came to meet with me — I thought no one could restore the beauty the fence and deck had lost. Boy was I wrong!
Jose is a true artist and craftsman that really know how to restore and preserve any wood structure. He is knowledgeable about the products and procedures he uses, and gave me the time I needed to make sure I picked out the right stain color.
He is also very professional, always arrived on time and delivered a perfect job in the time he estimated. He was respectful of my home and truly treated it as his own. His crew cleaned up after themselves, and when they were finished — the fence and deck were as beautiful as when they were first built and stained several years ago.

I live in San Francisco, and had Jose of «Deck Preservation & Painting» come and give me an estimate of my home. Some may ask, why a company out in Hayward and not in San Francisco. Well I shopped around, I found Jose and his crew to be the most competent of what I needed to have done. Price wise, everyone was in the same ball park. What couldn’t be bought was the knowledge of knowing it was going to get done right!
Well as it turned out, I got more than money could buy. Jose and his crew did exactly what I wanted, and more. He is quite knowledgable about color and its placement.
