The Shack

Great local place to meet up with friends and neighbors for food and drinks. We take our boat and dock it right outside. They are known for their burgers, but I especially like the blackened fish wrap. Happy Hour has good deals too!
Great place for watching sports, has billiards tables and plenty of space for larger groups. The staff are all friendly and work hard to get your food and drinks to the table as quickly as they can!

This place does not look so nice not kids friendly from outside. But we were pleasantly surprised how nice it was as we walk towards the back. The deck area has a great water front view. They have a good selection of food too. I was excited to find late lunch items next to the burgers, sandwiches and salads. The serving portions are huge! We took almost half of our food home.
Good for families and big group. There is something for everyone. The only down side is that the service is a bit slow. As long as you are not in hurry, this is a good place for lunch or dinner.

We ordered fish and chips and shrimp and chips and two salads. Food was okay. The fries could have been hotter but i would eat it again. Server was friendly but didn’t quite understand why we wanted plates and flatware for our poppers…(there was 4 of us)

We have been to this location many times over this past summer. This place is really great for big get-​togethers.
The burgers here are pretty tasty! We usually get a bunch of pupus and then split the burger. The mozzarella sticks and potato skins are my favorites. I have also had the chicken sandwich, really nicely cooked and juicy. The drinks are all good and their happy hour is great.
The service here is super friendly. All the waitresses are very nice and attentive. Can’t beat the view if you eat on the patio. Right on the water in Hawaii Kai! Can’t get any more relaxing than that!

Coming here for the last several years and they’ve been pretty consistently good. Of course they (like everyone else) has the not so great moments, but for the most part they’re good! Finally decided to make a review.
Food:
We usually get the $ 8.95 Zukes (breaded sliced zucchini fried w/​Parmesan cheese) that comes with ranch, blue cheese, or marinara sauce. You need to tell them which sauce you want cause if you don’t, they’ll jus give you ranch. Every now and then we’ll get a burger ($ 8.95 bacon blues for me and the $ 8.75 black bean garden for the wife) Amazingly enough she says the black bean garden burger has really good flavor and is big! Another we usually get is the epic wings (with all the sauces on the side), the onion rings, and/​or the potato skins. All are good and have awesome flavor! Prices range from $ 6-​$ 14 for pupus, $ 13-​$ 15 for plate lunches (huge portions!), $ 8-​$ 11 for burgers, $ 8-​$ 10 for sandwiches, and $ 4-​$ 12 for salads. They do have happy hour AND specials every day! I love their beer on tap (they got more than a dozen) and the bottled beer is more than that! If you like the mixed drinks, they got the typical ones and their own specials. Now if you’re a wine kinda person, they got whites and reds too.
Service:
The girls here (yes, I haven’t seen a guy server as of yet) are attentive and fun! They’re all fun to talk and joke around with! Every now and then I feel like doin the «pay it forward» kinda thing without tellin people. Hehehehe. Sneaky lil buggah eh?!? Totally love it that the waitresses play along with it too! Weeee!!!
Cleanliness /​ambiance:
For being a bar/​food place it’s pretty clean! The tables/​chairs are clean and ready for the next customer to sit at when you look around. You gotta remember that this is not a 5 star restaurant and it’s a sports bar… not everything is pristine. It’s as clean as its gonna get for being here for decades!
Bottom line:
We love this place and will keep coming back because the food and the service are good!

By far the best Shack location IMO.
This location always has my beer of choice «Stella Artois» in either draft or bottles. I prefer bottled over draft beer.
The servers here just seem to show that they enjoy their jobs more by how they carry themselves.
Always greeted with a nice big smile… especially now that there’s a lot of new servers, they still have carried on the pleasantness of the HK location.
I was at the Mililani location yesterday.
The server was pleasant, but seemed short in how she conducted herself when she came to my table.
I like that location because their the only location that serves fresh Poke. I always wondered why don’t they serve Poke at the HK location? I mean it’s located right on the marina in Hawaii Kai???
Anyway… I ordered the «Fresh Poke Made Daily» as the sign read… this being at the Mililani location.
I got a plate of warm fish, with some marinated yellow onions. Nothing like a Poke appetizer should look like. The presentation was… honestly…TERRIBLE! But the taste was mediocre.
Why? I had poke at the Mililani location before and it was okay back then.
I requested that the Poke be taken of my bill since it wasn’t worth the money, not to mention the very bland taste that it had.
She took the Poke off my bill, without hesitation… almost seemed like she knew that she served an inferior plate of raw fish to me!
Geez! I would have been happier for her to not have served me the Poke and instead told me that they were out of it.
Aside from that…
The Mililani location will still be my second favorite…
Hard to beat the HK location!!!

I am really disappointed in their Chinese chicken salad I got today. I remember years ago it was really good!!! And it was only about $ 6.85.
Now it cost $ 14!!! And the quality is terrible! All iceberg lettuce! Not to mention it was turning brown where it was cut.
0 stars if I could. Terrible waste of money, good learning experience: NEVER GO BACK TO THE SHACK!

I had zuccini and salad with a corona this time!

Hmm… for me it was just alright. I recently went to the Kailua location and loved it so I was looking forward to coming here.
I don’t really have major complaints, it was just kinda so-​so. When we arrived, it was a bit before they opened but we weren’t sure because the doors were open and the (many) tvs were on. We walked in and a girl told us they weren’t officially open yet. No problem, we went and sat outside in front of the restaurant. A few minutes later, a different girl came to us and gave us menus and asked if we wanted drinks. We were like, «oh…they said you’re not open yet?» and she kinda shrugged and had us come in and find a table. Then a third girl walked by and said they weren’t open yet. It wasn’t a big deal but just a little awkward.
We ordered the Zukes (fried zucchini), a burger, and a sandwich. The Zukes were piping hot (yay!) but not quite as good as they were in Kailua. The burger and sandwich were ok, nothing to write home about.
There are lots of tvs for sports fans, pool tables, and a breathalyzer machine (lol!). You can also sit near the view of the water which is pretty cool.
My mom always rates every public restroom she visits. I think she’d rate this one a ⁶⁄₁₀. It’s up the stairs and a little dated. It had the feeling of being passable as «clean» but not quite as clean as one would hope.
Since I don’t typically frequent the Hawaii Kai area, I probably wouldn’t come back but I would 100% return to their other location in Kailua.

Overall the burgers were good. Messy but tasty. The fries were nothing extraordinary and the «Epic» Calamari weren’t that tasty. The sauce that came with the Calamari was good, a kind of creamy Lumpia sauce. The menus were dirty and sticky, the bathrooms weren’t working, and the service was just meh. Hope the other «Shack“s are better.

Went twice; first time had drinks and dinner. Second time turned out to be just a so-​so Guinness.
Great location on the water. Had dinner on the deck outside after hiking up and around Hanauma Bay. I had a decent maitai and a good bleu cheese and bacon burger. The fries were bland and needed the ketchup. The salad was good also. Our waitress wasn’t the most friendly but was okay. Once food and drinks were served, her performance improved and she did check on us a couple times.
Second visit was two nights later. Again, sat on the deck planning to drink and eat there. It was dark, there were no torches/​lights lit where we were sitting. Asked the waitress (different one and more accommodating) if the gas torches could be turned on so we could have some light. She had the manager light ‘em. All except for where we were seated. Asked the waitress about this since torches, except where we were, had just been lit. She went to ask the manager. Turns out the valve on the torches where we were sitting was broken. Ok, fine. And the manager who was told a customer asked to have the torches turned on didn’t bother to tell them (us) the torch was broken — as he walked right by lighting the torches? Pretty stupid and inconsiderate of him.
So, drank my so-​so Guinness and walked to Cha Cha Cha instead. I don’t expect perfection, but do expect the manager to tell me the lights are broken — especially when I specifically asked to have some illumination.
I’ll go back ’cause I like the beer selection (but their Guinness needs help) and the food’s okay. If they repeat shitty service; that’s it – done.

Good friendly service. Food was just ok. We had the rack of ribs and chicken wings. Both were nothing to write home
about. Great place to watch sports. They have a lot of TVs for those football Sundays when you have to see your team play.

FOOD:
The shack has some solid food and the portions are no joke! I ordered the shrimp and chips, and there were about 10 pieces of coconut-​encrusted shrimp. My friend ordered the Ruben burger, and it was the most monsterous burger topped with corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Plenty of food and it was all cooked perfectly.
My only slight issue with the food is that they seems to be changing up their menu. their menu has Stella Cidre listed as on tap, but they told me it was changed to Angry Orchard. :/​
SERVICE & SPACE:
The Shack is a cool space, it’s a giant bar with lots of seating, including outdoor seating with a fantastic view of the marina. There are also plenty of tvs to watch sports on.

One small issue with the space though: the women’s bathroom door needs to be replaced please.
PRICE:
Very fair. $ 10 per person for our meals was really reasonable.

1. VERDICT/​VALUE
Earns the stars for having a wide menu, decent food, good service, and casual environment.
2. FOOD
There’s a wide selection of burgers and sandwiches; on the most recent visit, I had:
Buffalo Wings ($ 8.99): eight wings — decently juicy with your choice of two sauces (if you choose to not have the wings cooked in it) and the obligatory celery sticks come in this dish. A great starter or snack!
Curly Fries ($ 5.95): reasonably sized but disappointingly without taste. Keep the salt and ketchup close by…
I also got a refillable soda for $ 2.75.
3. SERVICE
Friendly as always from the get-​go, recommendations are freely offered, with attention and water refills constant even after the bill is paid.
4. ATMOSPHERE
It’s a bar essentially — a very casual place to chat with lanei /​waterfront seating to boot! Parking is usually available in the shopping complex lot.

Came here for some burgers three days ago with my wife and kids. Although l’ve had their burgers a few times already, I’ve never actually dined in at the Shack before. The place was pretty empty since it was slightly past lunch time. Service was good and the food was excellent! This was my wife’s first time trying out their burgers and she loved the the shack burger. I had their reuben burger and it was pleasantly good as well. Their garlic shoyu chicken wings are worth a try also. The Shack is always one of my favorite places to have burger… probably second place behind Teddy’s.

Nestled back in a strip mall in Hawaii Kai, the Shack has a tiki décor, is right on the water and has a super chill vibe.
There is plenty of free parking. We were there to catch an early lunch, around 11ish and they had just opened. There was hardly anyone there. It was self seating so we grabbed a table in the shade by the water and the waitress took our drink order right away.
I was surprised how cheap the food was with sandwiches under $ 10. They had dirty cheap tacos on special but we decided to split the pastrami Ruben and grilled chicken and bacon sandwich.
The order came out in a reasonable amount of time and both sandwiches were split in half on separate plates since we said we were going to share. Which was nice since we did not ask for that. There is no sides with the sandwich (no fries or slaw) but with such a cheap price it was fine. The sandwiches were hot and tasty!
I will definitely go back for the great view, tasty food and chill atmosphere.

We came here to catch the Woman’s USA World Cup match against Japan (congratulations ladies).
We wanted a burger, a beer, a view, a casual atmosphere.
The Shack delivered on all fronts.
(And, the added familiarity of being connected to The Shack in Playa del Rey, LA,…my home town, merely added to the positive gestalt of the situation)

Very cool view and awesome drinks. Friendly waitresses too :) try to sit outside. Relaxed and friendly environment. We got guacamole with chips; the guac was not the best, but overall cool place to go to.

Great sports bar, Great bar food! Burgers are king!
