Wow! What can I say about this place! As a self proclaimed sandwich aficionado I can say hands down that this is in the top 10 sandwich shops I have ever been in. The bread was home made, and anyone that knows sandwiches you know that one key component to a great sandwich is great bread! I got the chicken salad sandwich and let me just say that they did not skimp on the chicken. The amount of chicken in this sandwich was off the charts. For the price the sandwich was great. I had their blueberry tart, and that too was great! If I ever find myself in DC I will surely stop there for a sandwich!

Umpleby´s is a staple for those needing a quick bite and coffee in Hanover. Forever flooded with students and staff from DC, it´s always an interesting atmosphere and makes for great people watching with a coffee and yummy bite to eat. They also have outdoor seating for those sunnier days. Coffee wise, they have a good range. I wouldn´t call it great coffee, more comfort coffee, not terrible — good to keep you going until you get home and can pull a nice shot of espresso from the home machine. The food is nice, not cheap for what you get but definitely delicious, with excellent vegetarian options. The hummus and avocado(domnique franco? sp) was very delicious and paired with a hot coffee makes for a great light lunch. I would recommend getting in early for lunch or going afterwards in the afternoon as it packs out quickly. You´ll also find that the service is extremely friendly if a little slow at times, with the odd moment of finding yourself standing at the counter for 5 – 10 minutes whilst other things are going on to get your order taken, but it has never been an issue as the service again is very friendly and it is a chilled out atmosphere. I usually spend a few hours at a time working on my laptop here and word to wise here, make sure your work does not rely on the internet because it sometimes feels like its on a 28k dial up, so take that in mind if you need access to drive or files etc. Otherwise, a cool spot to chill.

TL;DR: Umpleby’s has the best vegetarian sandwich options in town, but there’s always limited seating and wifi is slow. Hours are also limited. Food: Mungo Park(veggies and curry mayo) is my go-to; adult grilled cheese and Dominique Francon(hummus, avocado and cheese) solid options too. There’s always a good vegetarian soup, bakery items are just ok, and lattes aren’t bad(but not overwhelmingly better than Dirt). I come here for the flavorful vegetarian sandwiches, which are surprisingly hard to find elsewhere. Everything is priced reasonably — $ 8 for most sandwiches, $ 4 for a small soup and $ 5 for a bowl. The butternut squash soup is kind of watery — not sure their soups match up to their sandwiches and the soup options are always limited. Ambiance: Umpleby’s is always crowded and the two person tables are small. It’s a nice place to work for white noise, but only if you can find a place to sit. There’s free wifi, but it’s too slow to do anything that requires a lot of online browsing. Unfortunately, they stop serving sandwiches at 3 and close at 6, so the hours are pretty inconvenient except on the weekend.

It’s a cute little place, and people obviously love to work here, but I just found it a bit plain. It’s also very full so oftentimes, it’s hard to get a table. I got a coffee, which was well-brewed. I guess it’s easier to order it in a to-go cup due to the size of the cups I guess. I was confused. The pastry display sucked me in and I ended up getting a russian tea cake and a chocolate crinkle. The russian tea cake was delicious, but oh so small. It’s light and lemony. The chocolate crinkle is an amazing chocolate cookie with powdered sugar on top. It has a nice crunchiness on the outside, but the inside is incredibly soft. Loved it.

Walked in and tried to order a non-breakfast sandwich at 10:30 and they flat out refused«because they’re making breakfast sandwiches right now» and don’t serve normal ones til 11. That’s the type of bs I’d expect from McDonalds maybe, but for a local place it’s ridiculous to turn down business because you can’t put turkey and cheese b/t two slices of the same bread you’re using for breakfast sandwiches anyway. The lady didn’t even check to see if they’d make an exception. I hope they go out of business. Sandwiches are good though, if you can convince them to take your money and(slowly) serve you one.

It’s cute. Food is ok — slightly on the $$$ for what it is. Counter staff is SLOW… If you want to have coffee and hang out it’s probably a great place.

I agree w Steve K. I found the service to be Hit or miss on reception at the counter. And I wanted to like the place. Coffee good yet a refill is full price?(Same cup) Yes, the pastries and sandwiches are tasty though not enough to keep me coming back.

I have only had sandwiches/etc catered to the office and they always manage to get at least one person’s order wrong. I’d vote to order from Panera everytime but b/c they have a minimum order for delivery, we can’t go w/them so we are«stuck» with Umpleby’s. Last time we ordered(I am guessing it’s about 15 people total), my entire sandwich was missing, causing one of our staff members to have to run back to the café. For the sake of courtesy, they should have sent one over given their mistake and our advance order, or at least comped the sandwich. Nope. If I had a choice, I’d never have catering from them; despite Panera being more«processed» they are infinitely more professional and overall their food actually tastes better.

Sandwiches are fantastic though with the dressings and spreads can get a little soggy. Staff and prices were about what I’d expect for most restaurants in the region, which isn’t anything special. Seemed like a good place to get a drink and snack and study. And, uh, the chips were surprisingly tasty too! Not much else to say.

Eh I’m not a huge Umpleby’s fan, but I know a lot of people are on campus. I’ve come here for random coffee chats with friends. Coffee is alright but nothing extraordinary. I’ve also had brunch here which hasn’t been too bad. Just a typical sandwich combo. It’s a cute little café with a nice atmosphere. They sell a number of pastry items and have a breakfast/lunch menu. On a given day, you’ll probably see a lot of Dartmouth kids meeting up here or studying here. It’s a bit far from campus for my liking, but the vibe is chill and it’s not too loud. tldr; decent café, but nothing amazing

Umpleby’s is a great place to have a casual meeting with a friend or just relax with a book. It’s a relatively small space that still feels airy, so it has a tendency to get noisy when the room is more than 50% full. Most of the clientele are Dartmouth students and Hanover locals. They have a wide range of offerings – desserts, sandwiches and soups, pies, bread, and beverages like coffee and tea. The meat pies(especially the curry chicken one) are excellent, but make to get them heated up before you chow down. I also enjoy the soups they make everyday and the serving sizes are decent. Service can be a bit slow since they recently made a lot of staffing changes, but they are usually always courteous. It might take a bit to get your food and get an answer to a quick question, but the food and the space are quaint and solid.

Very cute spot, like everything else in this area. It looks kinda like a house in the inside and outside. I wasn’t thrilled about the food. It was ok. I ordered a sandwich with turkey on white bread, cheese, and green apple. I noticed the sweets though, chocolate truffles, tarts, etc. It all looked great !! Great stop on the way out of Hanover.

I was excited to see they have meat pies, but they just reheat them in a microwave, making the pastry soggy, and the filling is not good enough to save it. The coffee is also pretty average. Sandwiches are quite good.

The sandwiches are pretty good here. They’re made generously, and the ingredients are fresh and somewhat unusual. Prices are typical. Good selection of old-timey sodas, etc. Avoid their pastries and baked goods, tho. Décor is sort of self-conscious rustic rural New England-y. Maybe a bit precious, but pleasant and comfortable, much better than the typical Upper Valley chain-restaurant style décor. It’s a nice place to hang out for lunch. Take-out is convenient too, and makes for a nice picnic lunch.

Fantastic sandwiches and hearty soups that are especially good on cold days. I haven’t tried the pastries. Coffee and cappuccino is not great but I’m scoring the place on the sandwiches and soups. Try it you’ll like it.

I’ve been here twice. The first time was on the way to Vermont, a full lunch. The second time was during a visit to Dartmouth. Both times, I was charmed by this cozy little bakery just a stone’s throw away from campus. Love: 1) The fact that the sandwiches are named after literary characters. 2) The numerous tables scattered around the bakery. 3) The fact that you can have a conversation or study here, in equal measures. 4) The portion sizes are small enough not overwhelm you but large enough to fill you up. 5) The grilled sandwiches are crispy and flavorful. 6) The baked goods(especially the chocolate pastries) are excellent here. Try it with a latte and you’ll find yourself wanting to spend the afternoon there. A great small bakery/café in a great small town.
