I am not sure what the expectations of the average individual are, but I’m always satisfied with the food. Just like any establishment, you have to know what you want. Their egg rolls are delicious, despite the poor review of one person. I agree that the interior is dated, but that is common in the area. I just pick it up and eat it in the comfortable scenery of my own home. *boom* problem solved.

This restaurant is CLOSED. Everything’s been removed from the interior. Sad, as it was our first choice for great Chinese food when I grew up here. — 6÷1÷2014

We went here on Saturday for an early dinner and was not at all impressed. The resturant was empty(granted it was snowing) so I expected some kind of service. We seated ourselves and a guy came a dropped of menus and then about 7 minutes later came to take our order. He seemed annoyed that he had to wait on actual people since business seemed to be booming for take out orders. Anyway about 25 minutes go by and our food arrived. My dinner company had built this place up telling me how good the food was and I have to say I was disappointed. The white rice was dry. The beef with garlic disappointing. The beef was shiney as it had been exposed to the light for too long and the sauce was very thick. The fried rice had a very smokey taste to it. The portions was large but the food was barely edible. The best part was the sweet and sour sauce. This is not a place I will be returning.

Have been going for yrs. Huge portions. Egg rolls are good, but lately not like they use to be. They DID have the best! Not clean, and the bathrooms have ALWAYS been TERRIBLE. I always avoid! Surprised the health dept dont do something!

I grew up going to Hong Kong. The food was always amazing and it was my families first choice for Chinese. I raved about this place to everyone. The egg rolls were the best! Something changed though and now I refuse to go back. The last time we ordered from them we did carry out. They completely forgot to give us our fried rice and the egg rolls were nothing like what they used to be. It’s a huge disappointment but obviously the cook changed and they aren’t what they used to be.

When we went in it had the same tacky interior I expected. Nothing special… the restaurant around dinner time on a Sunday was empty. maybe 2 other couples of people in the place. We were greeted by a semi friendly woman and seated immediately. Good: 1. At first the service was very prompt… got drinks and menus immediately 2. The Crab Rangoon were good. 3. They give you hot tea which is nice on a cold February day. 4. Portions were average sized. Bad: 1. Bathrooms are gross… could use a really good cleaning. 2. The tables were a little sticky once again could have used a good cleaning. The whole place seemed dingy and dirty. 3. We ordered 2 entrees and when they came to the table they smelled rancid. We were brave and tried them anyway they tasted ok but everything on the plate seemed slimey(we both felt fine the next day). Everything was a little on the bland side as well. 4. While the service was fine at the beginning after the waitress laid down the check we never saw her again and we got sick of waiting we went up to the front counter and still found no one. We continued to wait while all these people came in for pick up there must of been 5 people waiting for pick up with no one at the desk finally some young kid comes in and after taking care of all the pick up orders we finally get checked out. I am a patient person but this was ridiculous. 5. I left a lot of food on the plate and decided not to take anything home and I’m all for Chinese food for lunch the next day… it tasted that average that it wasn’t something I wanted to take home. For me that says a lot. The service being poor, the dirty interiors and non appetizing smelling food I will not be back there are so many other places to get great Chinese food… this is not it.

I WONTBEBACK!!! I love love love Chinese food, actually my 2nd favorite! OK the food is not great, I mean it’s edible but not great! The egg rolls are horrible they taste like Cinnamon or something ugh, so I told the the waitress and she replied«what’s wrong with you? everyone loves our egg rolls, and come back for more» WTF does that have to do with me? I’m only one person and I think they are gross! also I asked her for sweet and sour sauce and she argued with me and«duck sauce’ is sweet and sour sauce, NOIT’S NOT! she didn’t take them off my bill even though I ordered 2 and only bit into ONE, the tea was good, the food portions were great but the food taste was mediocre at best…

We have lived in Hanover Park for 26 years and eaten at The Hong Kong Restaurant since we moved here(on Irving Park Rd). Since about 3 – 4 years ago the food changed. I don’t know if whoever makes the egg rolls retired or what but the HK use to have the best egg rolls — no longer. The food is okay but not like it use to be. Someone left, retired, died ??? that did the real good cooking there and whoever took over just doesn’t cook as good as before. The egg foo young was almost raw. The egg rolls are seasoned differently and the Mongolian Beef is gristle and fatty. The people are friendly and service is still good though.

I don’t understand the low reviews of Hong Kong. I’ve eaten here a few times and enjoyed each visit. The food is fresh and the portions are fairly large where you will almost always have leftovers to take home. The restaurant isn’t anything special but I’m there to eat, not look around. I will definitely be back.

We used to dine here but after what was told to us today, we will never return. Last night we order 2 side orders of crab ragoon for delivery. After an hour of waiting we received a call. It was the driver asking where our house was. First off, shouldn’t you know where you are going? This was not the first time we ordered food for delivery. All the previous orders for delivery we never had to wait an hour or have a driver ask where were we. Anyways, I gave the driver directions from where he was to my house. He was only a few block away. He showed up about 10 mins after he called. It takes less then 2 mins to get to my house from where he was but whatever. *Knock Knock* The food arrived! I asked the man how much it was and he told me. As my girlfriend was getting the cash together I opened the bag to feel the temp of the crab ragoons. I never directly touched the food, just the wax paper bags they were in. I told my girlfriend that they were not hot, they were just slightly warm. She asked to feel for herself(she is a kitchen manager and knows food better than I) and she said the same thing I said, they are not hot enough for us to buy them. We refused to buy them and the delivery man(who was very hard to understand due to his accent) told us to re-fry them!!! AREYOUKIDDINGME!!! We called the Hong Kong to tell them, we are sorry but we turn the food down but they were closed. We called the same number who called us for directions and we never got an answer. Oh well, so we called today. This time we got a rude ass lady telling us she was the passenger in the delivery and she insisted the food was HOT. She argued aggressively and they said,“What did you expect? You are 15 minutes away. What do you want me to do about it? You should have ordered from New Hong Kong“ Again, REALLY? Did she really just tell me that: 1) I don’t know how to tell when food is hot or not? 2) She complained that we are 15 mins away and 3) Told us to order from another place that is closer. We live 3.3 miles away and estimated time is 7 mins from what google says. Overall the food has been good in the past but we will never return or order from the place again due to the way the whole situation was dealt with. We will take the dumb woman’s advice and order from New Hong Kong on Valley Lane in Streamwood. Thanks lady for the giant«F You» you gave us.

This has to be some of the best chinese food in the area. The egg drop soup is great. The egg rolls are perfect. The family that owns it is so nice and always willing to please. We do carry-out all the time & it’s always ready in 20 mins. Great prices and they fill the boxes to the point that they need to staple it rather than hook it closed because they’re so full.

I have been going to this restaurant since before I could walk. Staff is still the same family and always a pleasant experience. Food is amazing. My guilty pleasure isnt on the menu. It was a buffet item but they have since stopped doing the buffet but they will still make it for me! Order the buffet style chow mein… sooooooo goood. Its vegetarian in case you were wondering… and NO im not a vegetarian… in case you were wondering ;)

NOTGOOD. when i ordered pork with pea pods and onions, it came with pork blubbers with pea pods and onions. seriously, there wasn’t a single piece of actual pork meat in a large size plate. i don’t know if they were out of pork because i ordered less than an hour before they close or not. but you just don’t serve all blubber in place of actual meat. i don’t hate fat with meat. i love super fatty Kobe beef and fatty pork belly meats, just not all damn blubber. i also ordered pot stickers, and those were not good neither. they obviously are dirt cheap and no pride in what they do.

My wife and I went on a weekday. Interior is much bigger than what it appears from the outside. Restaurant was clean and had the typical chinese restaurant ambience. They give you big portions, so order wisely. I think their food could hav e been better. The vegetable dish we odered was overboiled and way too much corn syrup was slathered on it. Taste was ok though. I am going to be trying other chinese restuarants in the area and I will still keep this on my list for the sake of convenience, since it is not far from home.

What this restaurant lacks in décor it makes up for in taste. It’s in a little strip mall near a the busy intersection of Barrington and Irving Park, the inside is of a typical chinese restaurant with no frills, but it’s been a family favorite for 20 years or more. Everything is extremely fresh, the eggrolls and crab rangoon are better than most places in the area. Huge portions and friendly staff and quick take out ordering.
