Hana Kai Maui

We chose to stay here so we could tour Hana for two days. The #5 unit is awesome. the view of the ocean, the breeze coming in the condo and the floor plan was amazing. Highly recommend this to any and all. the front desk staff very friendly.

So glad we booked this place as our 2 night, 3 day base for exploring eastern Maui in the middle of honeymoon. Based on the reviews and tips, we booked Room #1, Waikoloa, which was a top floor corner unit with views of Hana Bay and its black sand beach. Used the downstairs grill for dinner both nights which was a welcome relief from all the restaurants for the first half of our trip. We fell asleep listening to the waves crash. Felt like our own little private slice of heaven. I would go back in a heartbeat if we ever get the opportunity.

* Locations: Hana black sand beach. It is about 5 miles from the wai’anapanapa state park and 20 min drive from Pipiwai trail. There are a small market and a few restaurants 5 min away. The hotel is right on the beach and easy access to the black sand beach! 5 star.
* Motif: quaint, cute and simple décor but everything is perfectly arranged. Unit 202 has a loft with a queen bed upstair and a queen bed down stair. High vault ceiling! 4+ star.
* service: everyone seems very nice and friendly here! 4+ star.

We found this place through TripAdvisor and a bit concerned since there are a few complaints of thin wall, uncomfortable beds etc.
What a nice surprise! We got unit 202 ocean view. The unit is very cute and nicely arranged with high vault ceiling. Even though there is no AC, you get the trade wind from the ocean and it was actually kinda chilly at night.
The hotel does not have pool, gym or spa but they have a beautiful black sand beach in their backyard. We spent an afternoon exploring that beach. The sunrise view is amazing and worth every penny!
We only stayed here for one night to break our drive from Ka’anapali to Hana and then to the Haleakala and were glad that we found this place. Definitely come back and stay a bit longer.
Things you will need:
— stock your car with snacks, drinks and something to make dinner. There is a few restaurants in the area bit they close by 8 pm.
— they have some board game for entertaining but if you want to watch movies, you will need to bring your own device.
— we went to pipiwai trail then drive from there to Haleakala to see the sunset via highway 360 to 37 and then 377. It takes about 2 hour drive. You do not need to go back to the way you come down to Hana.

This place came highly recommend by our friends who grew up on Maui so we knew this had to be the real deal and it was!
We arrived around noon hoping that we might have our room available, no such luck! No worries, we were prepared and were told to come back in a few hours but in the mean time they pointed us to few local places to grab lunch and relax and gave us a map of nearby places of interest so that was pretty cool.
We spent the time grabbing lunch, checking out the general store and heading to Wainapana state park! Perfect way to explore and sightsee!
Back to Hana Kai, Overall their entire place is so tranquil! After all, it’s literally right on the black beach! I believe there’s around 17 different types of rooms to choose from but they can fill up quickly depending upon when you’re going and what’s going on in Hana.
We arrived back well after 3pm and were delighted by our cozy little unit. It was an ocean front studio unit (Kaumaka, #102) which was perfect for hubby and myself. One queen bed with sliding doors to see out into the ocean. Granted, there is another building in front of ours, the roaring sounds of the ocean sure made it feel like we were right «on» the shore!
A small little kitchenette complete with an oven, full size refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and all dishes, glasses and utensils along with cooking ware!
My only minimal complaint was a rather hard mattress but maybe it’s because I’m used to a cushy pillow top mattress. Regardless, it didn’t keep me from passing out each night from exhaustion!
Bathroom was split into shower/​toilet area with a separate area with a sink/​closet. Nice and spacious! The folded «swan» towels were a nice touch! Fluffy towels and (full size) shampoos (to use) were also pretty awesome!
Sadly, we only had 2 of our 3 nights booked here but I sure wish we had a week or more! Oh well, back to reality! Thank you, Hana Kai for our mini stay-​cation while we island hopped for a long weekend!
Check this place out! It will provide some much needed Aloha love after the long Hana drive!

ALOHA INDEED! Indescribable location. We had a late night check-​in & the sound of those waves in the dark: Magical! I felt like I might fall asleep w/​the tide coming in & wake up in the middle of the ocean — you are literally THAT CLOSE to the beach.

Communication = fab /​hotel contacted us the day before our trip to alert us to a landslide on the road to Hana that had the road blocked
Check-​in = she was so sweet
Room = fun layout /​cute peep-​through area between kitchen & lanai, as well as between the master and living room.
Air-​conditioning = none but also un-​needed on our Mid-​March stay
Bathroom = the most yummy island smelling hair products
Space = enough room for our whole family
Fresh Flowers = on the table (you’ll touch them to confirm, but they are real)
Grounds = snazzy /​koi ponds /​well kept
Curtains = little thin /​not quite big enough for the window, but what fool wants to sleep-​in when you have just found paradise !
Overall = top notch stay
Hana Kai Maui will forever hold a special place in my heart. If I were on a honeymoon, writing a book, planning a family reunion, or hiding from the police: I would book this remote/​relaxed/​recharging room again in a heartbeat. I will forever be looking for an excuse to come back! Lov’d our first night in Maui.

We have lived on Maui for almost 10 years and this is only our 2^nd time to Maui. Since my mother was in town we decided to play tourist for the weekend. Honestly we weren’t sure about the accommodations available in Hana, and were a little skeptical until we arrived in our room! Plenty comfortable for our two children, my husband and I and grandma. We had beautiful views of sunrise in the morning, and the room was well supplied with plenty of supplies. Hana Kai was well beyond my expectations and we will definitely stay again on our next trip to Hana.

Wow! What a hidden gem in Hana. We feel so lucky to have found this delightful resort right on a beautiful bay. Susie and Tony the property managers were so friendly and helpful. They really do a great job keeping the property looking so nice. The condos are individually owned and each one is decorated uniquely. We had an amazing ocean view — you can keep the screened windows open all night and feel the breeze and hear the waves. It’s an easy walk to Hana Bay and the quaint, friendly town. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay more than two nights. Mahalo!

We had a wonderful 3 nights in Hana here. The beach in February is very rocky. We watched surfers from our lanai.

This is a repeat stay. If you are coming to Hana, stay the night or two and treat yourself to the Hana Kai Maui. The rooms are old, but up-​to-​date (no TV by design) with amenities and the location is 5-​star. Friendly staff, beautifully appointed rooms, and the sounds of the ocean every single moment you are there. Well stocked kitchen could lend this to a 2 – 3 day stay, but bring your own groceries.

This hotel absolutely was the highlight of our stay on Maui. Unfortunately, we only had 1 night there. Next time we come to the island, I want to extend our time in Hana, and more specifically, in this hotel. It’s *on* the beach. I don’t think anywhere has a closer place. The kids loved it. It was spotless and had everything we could’ve needed, including NO TV! The kids griped about this, but hey, there was wifi and their devices so pfffft, suck it up kids! We stayed in room #3 Keanini and I highly recommend this room as it has easy access to the parking lot as well as a huge lanai to have your morning coffee and watch the sunrise. Just amazing. I love this place and hope to return someday.

We decided to split up our Road to Hana and stayed in Hana for 1 night. Absolutely loved our stay at Hana Kai Maui!
It is a quaint place consisted of a couple of building on a hill. You can see exactly what type of view each room has on the website which is super helpful is picking out the one you want vs what you want to pay. The rates are reasonable given the meticulous upkeep here and the location. Easy walk to get delicious Thai food for dinner. We ordered the «room service» breakfast which consisted of banana bread, fruit and yogurt. Delish!
Sure the Travasa down the road is fancier which may be what you want. But people like Hana because of this quiet sleepy little quaint town and I think a place like that may not match the feel. And you get much better views and ocean access here!
Woke up really early next morning and walked out on the black sand beach right out front. The sun rise was spectacular and not to be missed!

Beautiful location right off a black sand beach. Parking is a little tight (my only complaint) but staff and service is excellent and friendly.
The kitchen is well stocked with needed items and the entire room was spotless upon arrival. The only work you need to put in is to relax.
There’s wifi available (but you won’t need it since you’re in paradise).

We stayed at the Hana Kai several times over the years and fell in love, so we rented out the whole place for our wedding last year. Yes, this review is a little tardy! But we have nothing but wonderful things to say about Susie (the manager), the lovely staff, and of course, the grounds and Hana itself. It was a perfect day and we are forever grateful to everyone, the gods of Hawaii, aloha, and mana.
The rooms themselves (and we have seen every single one!) are unique and gorgeous. I recommend the oceanfront rooms (1 – 5) if you can afford it. In my opinion, you can’t get any better views, sounds, smells, and vibes that that. Yes, Hana is expensive. Yes, there are limited dining options in Hana. And I hope it stays that way. Hana is a special place and the Hana Kai is a special place to stay. It is not your traditional resort/​hotel that you will find in areas like Wailea. And I hope it stays that way.
There were a lot of other people who made our wedding spectacular (Alana, the wedding planner! Kevin, the kayak guide and videographer!) and Susie the Hana Kai were the perfect hosts. Mahalo and aloha. Needless to say, we will be back :)

The ONLY reason no 5^th star, was ammenities. For a bit more Travassa has the market cornered in Hana for the amazing experiences, but this quiet, quaint and comfortable spot is a pleasure. The wonderful people like Susie and Tony made it that much more amazing.

LOVED our stay here after a busy day sightseeing. Stayed in room 101. It is the ground floor of the back building but has an EXCELLENT view of the bay and black sand beach. The place was furnished well and had a great floor plan. Kitchen window also opens up for pass through to lanai dining area. Built in sofas also convert to two twin sleepers. All doors have floor to ceiling sliders for privacy, view, and screens for the breeze. The kitchen was fully stocked and allowed us to prepare a nice meal of Maui beef steaks, local salad greens and wine all from the small store up the
was nice to play games with our kids on the lanai, listen to the waves, relax, and reconnect.
We knew ahead about the thin walls from reading prior reviews and just used our «ocean waves“iPhone app to drown out the neighbor noise and had no issues sleeping.
The front desk lady was super friendly and even offered us a papaya from her personal home when we left. It was appreciated and delicious and by the way. Mahalo!

Loved my stay here. Clean, comfortable, relaxed. My studio with kitchenette was about $ 300/​night total which is expensive but totally worth it to me, because it’s clean (no bugs!!), convenient, great location, nice staff etc. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a second story room with a decent view of ocean. Outdated is the best words I can use to describe the rooms of Hana Kai Maui. No tv and no radio, with no sitting area inside condo were some of the non features of our unit. The view was great, but the lack of winds made it uncomfortable to sleep even with a floor fan going. The bed was comfortable though. The kitchen had plenty of supplies. We loved the cooking area down by the beach. Meet some super people there for dinner! Guy even played guitar while we watched the stars. Awesome! If you like privacy this probably is a poor choice. Slatted front doors, paper thin walls, lanais that allowed me to hear every single word of the gossip going on next lanai over! Hmmmmm maybe I like that part! LOL… Bathrooms hot as hell! No air flow at all in shower and small. Kind of smelled too. Beach rocky as hell! Bottomline for us! Ok for a one night stay, not ok for $ 300+ night after fees for this unit for any longer! Very close to Travaasa so enjoy a cocktail in their lounge and save the $ 200 you saved by staying at Hana Kai on something else !!

Best spot ever. No Tv’s no radio just you and mother nature. The road to Hana is hands down the best place on any island. If your thinking of staying here like we did for the night so you can take your time coming up and going back down this place is a must. They have a gas bbq and seating on the beach for you to use. A full kitchen and your own private balcony with a table for two. The queen bed and island themed décor are awesome. I wish we had of known about this place before we planned our trip so we could have stayed longer.

Ok things to know. Hana Kai is an affordable (for Maui) condo hotel. I booked the least expensive room. Here are things I wish I’d known prior to booking, starting with the positive.
Pros:
1) partial ocean view is just fine.
2) room is clean and comfortable.
3) little lanai with table and chairs is welcome.
4) bed is comfortable
5) bath products are amazing!
6) girl at check-​in was nice
Cons:
1) front door is slat style which doesn’t feel very private (don’t care so much about that) or secure (care about that).
2) bathroom doors are also slatted, so a little awkward if you aren’t really, really close with your roommate.
3) paper thin walls = no romance
4) squeaky bed = no romance
5) window curtains provide absolutely no light control nor privacy, they don’t even completely over the windows. Not everyone on vacation wants to watch the sun rise = no sleeping in.
6) gardeners and other folks may be working right outside said window with partial cover, giving them full view of your bed = no romance
7) paper thin ceiling, (neighbors rearranging furniture? at 6am penetrates ear plugs) = no sleeping in (though not hotel’s fault)
8) not the most customer friendly type place. Hard to explain: lots of little notices about how you need to secure your valuables and tons on what not to do= makes you feel a little unwelcome.
For only one night this place is fine.

Lovely contrast to the high end resorts in Kaanapali or wailea. We had a charming condo that was recently remodeled with granite countertops, stone rain shower with a great lanai that was no more than 50 ft from the crashing waves. No A/​C but we didn’t need it in April. No tv made unplugging very easy. The beach here is rocky but swim-​able. Nicely kept grounds. Older property but well maintained. Totally relaxing!

All I can say is «WOW»!! This place is amazing! If you visit you have to stay in room 5. It is perfect from the view to the exquisite furniture to the balcony. Everything is so clean & the room is beautifully designed. The balcony off the master bedroom over looks the black sand beach & the sound of the ocean is so clear it feels like your bed is right on the beach.
The only downside is that we are only staying one night, as this was a last minute decision after a day trip on the Road to Hana. Best decision ever! You have to check out this hidden treasure!

Stayed here for one night to break the drive to Hana into two days. I wouldn’t call it a resort, its really an inn/​hotel with efficiency units (bedroom, living room, kitchen, balcony/​lanai with dining table). It cost $ 300 incl taxes for the ocean view from the back building, whereas the Travaasa down the street is over 50% more but sounds more like a resort with spa and activities.
For the price you get friendly service, clean, basic and simply decorated/​outfitted accommodations, nice toiletries, free internet, no TV. The property is on a rocky part of a black sand beach, with two buildings one behind the other. Residents of the back building have slightly occluded views of the beach. Grounds are small, mostly the parking lots which all units open onto (makes this feel somewhat like a motel).
All in all, I’d say $ 250 would be a more appropriate price.

This is charming, lovely, and quiet. We had Lanakila unit #203 and it looks exactly like the pictures you can find on their website here
. Hana is a charming small Hawaiian town and if your time (and budget) permits, do spend at least one night there. There were 3 of us and I slept on the futon in the living room, very comfortable. It did get very windy over night but there were plenty of sheets and blankets for all 3 of us. We ran to the little stores in town in the morning to buy things and were able to make breakfast and coffee in the room. It is right by Hana bay with great view of the Bay and sunrise too! There was hardly any cellular signal in town but the hotel provided great wireless connection. Would stay here again for sure!!! Loved it!

I spent Christmas 2014 here at room 106 to split the Road to Hana into 2 days and had one of the most peaceful sleep I had in years, with the sound of the wind and waves crashing into Hana Bay. Tastefully decorated room and clean bedsheets, ocean views from the lanai, and even their own line of refreshing coconut-​based soap products. There’s a full kitchen (yes, they have a wine bottle opener!) where I was able to make breakfast omelette. The fridge was nice for storing lunch the next day, though somewhat difficult to open due to how it’s oriented. There’s direct access to Hana Bay for a morning stroll and it’s a short drive away from the trailhead to not-​to-​be-​missed Red Sand Beach. Very easy online booking and friendly and helpful staff. Also, there’s a key drop-​off for early check-​out, which helped me have a 7 am start in the Pipiwai trail. I had a fantastic time «unplugging» here!
MINOR quips: all windows and doors have to be inspected thoroughly to ensure privacy; the kitchen lacked a chopping board; bed is not very sturdy; the front office is somewhat difficult to find; wifi signal is not very strong and the parking lot spaces could get cramped. Negligible concerns if you’re already in aloha-​mode.

Not what we expected for $ 300+ per night.
My wife and I stayed in the Hana Kai, #2 Popolana room during our honeymoon in July 2014. We splurged on this nicer room (a bit over $ 300/​night) to split our road to Hana trip into two days. The idea was to get a nice, private, romantic place that was beachfront in Hana.
The room itself was pretty nice at first glance, pretty clean and has a full kitchen and small refrigerator. After a day on the road in the convertible and hiking, it was a little surprising to not see at least a small AC unit. The blow through breeze was pretty nice though. It was pretty nice to sleep to those sounds and the crashing waves. The bed was not very comfortable though (it was a murphy bed). Not to mention there was a wine fridge with lights on it that could light up New York. It was so bright we had to throw a towel over it just to get some sleep. One minor thing worth a mention is they do have wifi but the coverage is horrible. There was only a couple of spots in the room we could get it to even work, and when it did it was too slow to be usable.
We quickly realized that the privacy we thought we were getting was very lacking. There were no curtains or screens on the kitchen or bathroom windows. The bathroom window was a glass blind slat style window which someone could quite literally poke their finger in from the outside if they wanted to. Not to mention said window is actually inside the shower! It’s pretty bad when you don’t feel like you have privacy while showering (and on your honeymoon no less!). We even saw a few strange looking bugs crawling their way in while showering. A similar style slat is on the front door, and you hear every person that walks past and everything going on outside.
The lanai (balcony) is very nice and has a wonderful view of a black sand beach (and is the only reason this review received the second star it received). We thoroughly enjoyed our time out on the lanai. The beach itself was pretty nice, but more so for walking than actual swimming. There seemed to always be a few stray dogs running around. Presumably everyone outside also hears what’s going on inside.
The next day we wanted to spend a little time on the «private» area right in front of the beach. We went out there and were surprised to find it was basically a lawn with some rather scratchy grass and a few pieces of very cheap patio furniture. We decided to lay out on said furniture with some drinks and within ten minutes couldn’t believe what occurred. A four wheeler with a woman and a couple of kids came from the beach up within about 15 feet of us. The kids got off and started running around yelling and playing, followed by a pretty mean looking dog, which ran up sniffing and licking us. The woman walked up and commented «What? You don’t like dogs?». It was quite literally us (in our swimsuits) and them (in everyday street clothes) as the only people hanging around outside. We felt very out of place. A pickup truck then started backing up onto the lawn from the beach and stopped, with several men getting out. The woman from the four wheeler then informed us they would be picking up an old washing machine. Presumably she worked with the condo in some way. You’d think it wouldn’t take two vehicles and six people and two dogs to move a washing machine, but they were there for about twenty minutes and it really put a damper on our time and was a little too much reality for what we thought we were getting.
If you remove the gorgeous view from the equation, this was an experience I’d expect at a $ 50/​night motel. Their website claims «exquisite grounds» and a «quiet place to sit and enjoy the unspoiled beauty». Well for us, the Hana Kai was definitely not that place. Beautiful views, yes, but not much else.

This place is a gem in Hana and actually priced pretty reasonably compared with nearby accomodations.
Every suite has an ocean view and a sizable lanai within earshot of the Hana Bay waves. It’s accessible to the beach with some small waves, but the rocks are pretty rough.
Decent size kitchen with a full frige stocked with a brita and utensils, stemware, and some great Maui coffee.
Plenty of closet space, some games and books in each unit, and contrary to some of the reviews, I found our bathroom to be quite modern and nice. Beach towel service from the front desk, and some high-​end shampoo/​conditioner/​soap that’s locally made.
Service staff was friendly and professional, booking was a breeze, as was checking in and out.
Parking is a bit tight and the noise carries given the amphitheater-​like design, so please be courteous.
Also of note, there is no A/​C, but I was never uncomfortable given the ventilation and ocean breeze.
Not sure if it’s standard, but our unit (103) had an umbrella and styrofoam cooler that both came in handy. There’s a small programmable safe for your valuables, and lots of closet space.

The setting on Hana Bay is just divine! I rented one of the pricier units, $ 300 per night, right on the beach. It was well-​appointed and I prepared many good meals with the provided cookware.
The bed was very comfy with quality linens. Coffee was replenished daily, and the staff was so unobtrusive, I hardly noticed them at all. Within walking distance of everything you need to see in Hana, including the clothing-​optional Kaihalulu Beach.
I bumped the Hana Kai down a star because the shower in my room really needed an upgrade. The head sits at face level, and the valves are very sensitive.
