History

Established in 1972.

The pediatric dentistry side of the practice has been around since 1972. Dr. Heath Allen retired in 2012. We welcomed Dr. Joy Phelps to our practice in July of 2012. She has been a wonderful addition, and will continue the high quality of dentistry that our patients are accustomed. Dr. Michael P. McCormick Jr. has been in practice for over 15 years, and takes care of the adults in our practice. We also have an orthodontist, Dr. Walt Wexel, who has been with the practice since 1982. He takes care of all of the orthodontics for the kids and adults.

Meet the Business Owner

Joy Phelps DMD, MS P.

Business Owner

Dr. Joy Phelps was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and then completed her undergraduate education at North Carolina State University. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences, she attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. While a dental student she completed rotations in community health dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and pediatric dentistry. Her passion for providing children a happy dental experience prompted her to return to Virginia for her two year postdoctoral residency in pediatric dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University where she also earned a Master’s of Science Degree. Dr. Phelps then practiced pediatric dentistry in Ohio for 4 years.

Dr. Phelps earned the designation of a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and received the honor of being awarded the Richard C. Pugh Award for scoring in the top
