I’m updating my review because it’s only fair to reflect the change in frosting since my first review. For quite some time now, Erica O’Brien’s cupcakes have been topped with a wonderful little scoop of classic Swiss meringue buttercream, and it’s the stuff frosting dreams are made of — it’s made with real butter and such care that the end product is silky, creamy, not too sweet, and not crunchy at all like other buttercream frostings. I don’t know if it was always this buttercream, but the way it’s adorably scooped (it looks like an ice cream scoop!) on top of the already moist and flavorful cupcakes now is different from the more whipped frosting on the first cupcake I got from here two years ago.
Prices have stayed the same at $ 3 a cupcake, and it’s totally worth it. There are always great flavor combinations available, one of my favorites being the chocolate cupcake with salted caramel crack frosting. There is also usually a gluten-​free option, and the gluten-​free cupcakes aren’t bad.
Bonus: Erica O’Brien Cake Design shares a storefront with the Soup Girl, so you can pick up delicious soups and cupcakes at the same time!

Erica’s cakes are amazing. They look stunning and taste amazing (we posted a photo of our white cake with yellow pinwheels!). She uses the most fresh and delicious ingredients and everyone said it was actually YUMMY wedding cake, and not just for show. We had a wonderful experience tasting with Erica, who was super flexible and creative and responsive. She is a gem, and we are so happy she made our cake for our special day!

My husband and I used Erica O’Brien Cakes for our October wedding and I can not even put into words how happy we are! The cake was gorgeous! We still are getting compliments on it! It was delicious! We got the chocolate with the bailys filling and the vanilla with raspberry filling! Over the past year Erica was in constant contact with me making sure everything s perfect! She was so sweet and helpful!

My husband and I ordered a cake for my birthday. While the cake looked very pretty and beautiful, the taste was off. It felt like we were eating just raw butter and I had to tell my guests that they did not have to finish their slice, which was very embarrassing. We threw all of the cake away. The price is also expensive for what you get. We didn’t care about the price because we were hoping it would be worth it but for me taste is more important than looks. I have had better experience with $ 17 cakes from Whole Foods. Do not be fooled by how pretty it looks. It does not taste good. We used to order our cakes from Cakeology in Boston (Fabulous taste) but are having a hard time finding a replacement since we relocated to Hamden-​New Haven area.

Erica did our wedding cake in May and I have to say, it was perfection. Looked good, tasted amazing, and she helped come up with ideas of how to stay within our budget. Her eye for design is incredible (see photos on her website if you don’t believe me!). Couldn’t have been happier. Absolutely recommend!

Erica’s execution of my wedding cake was flawless. My guests walked into the reception’s dim room lit by lantern light and their eyes still flew to the cake. I heard ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ for the next 20 minutes as they filed in. The quality of the cake and icing was even better than the taste test. And I loved the fondant!
Equally important, she listened to my ideas of having a subtle victorian-​industrial design and embraced the challenge. The result was an elegant production of my husband and my personalities, and I couldn’t have been more proud of it. Thank you Erica!

The best cake ever! My wedding cake was gorgeous AND tasty.
Everything is made from scratch with REAL ingredients. I’m looking for a reason to order another cake. Yummy!

Erica did an amazing job making our wedding cake! It was a 3 tier, chocolate chip cake with baily’s irish buttercream & strawberry buttercream… so delicious! The cake was exactly what we wanted! We loved it! Thank you so much Erica!

Erica did a wonderful job on my 2 wedding cakes.
1 cake we asked her to copy exactly from a magazine and she nailed it. It was spot on. We also asked her to design a burrito shaped cake for us and it was perfect. Guacamole, chips and everything! Not only were the cakes beautiful but they were also delicious!
