Specialties

We are a small 6 room inn on the water’s edge of Pillar Point Harbor in the quaint and eclectic fishing village of Princeton-​by-​the-​Sea on the north side of Half Moon Bay. All rooms face the water and have either a small fenced patio or a balcony from which to relax and watch ocean life and sailboats. Our three downstairs rooms are dog friendly.

There is much to do and see in the area. From our inn, it’s just a short walk to restaurants, shopping, marina, hiking trails, fishing, and many beaches. Bring your bicycles, rent a kayak, take a whale watching trip, or play a round of golf. The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company — a 5 minute walk — offers beer tasting as well as delicious lunches and dinners.

History

Established in 2009.

The Inn at Mavericks, built in the mid 1990’s formerly operated under the name Harbor House. It was sold to new owners in 2009 and the six guestrooms and bathrooms were upgraded and re-​furnished opening under the Inn at Mavericks name. Each room is named after a well-​known surf location.

We stayed in Ross’ Cove Room#5. Beautiful view right on the water, our own balcony to watch the Sea Lions and Pelicans. Very clean room, comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom with soaking tub as well as free snacks, water, Keurig coffee maker, microwave, mini fridge, utensils, and glassware. Flat screen TV with cable as well. We loved the sound of the fog horn and the waves outside our room. This is our second time here and we will definitely be back again soon!

My husband and I stayed here for our wedding this last weekend along with our wedding party. It could not have been more perfect. Melissa and the staff are so friendy and so accomodating. The fire pit outside is such a great area. We had our rehersal dinner out there with about 20 people and it was perfect. Great place to start your morning as well. Both the groom, groomsmen and myself and my bridesmaids all got ready in the rooms with no problems. We will all be back for sure and highly recommend this place to anyone wishing to have a nice, relaxing, romantic get away.

If I could give the Inn at Mavericks more stars, I absolutely would. This place is an absolute gem. My girlfriend and I took a quick jaunt down to Half Moon Bay for my birthday and this was our third time staying at Maverick’s. I swear, once you experience this place, thinking about staying somewhere else doesn’t even enter your mind. It’s a little pricey, but for everything that you get, it is absolutely worth it.
We’ve only stayed in the Ross Cove room. It’s upstairs, in the middle, and it’s absolutely perfect for us. The bed, the linens, the Keurig, the snack tray… so many beautiful, elegant, thoughtful touches! We’ve never had any issues with cleanliness. It’s always perfect. The bathroom and the soak tub and rain shower… heaven. Everything about this place is heaven!
Location is prime and you’re completely within walking distance of Pillar Point Harbor. Maverick’s beach is also within walking distance and, as an aviation enthusiast, might I add that the HMB airport is behind the inn. I absolutely love sitting our on our private balcony and watching the planes come in. Don’t worry, it’s nothing bothersome or loud. It’s actually pretty awesome!
And to all of the people who complain about the fog horn? First of all, it’s not even that bad and I’m a light sleeper. We sleep with the door open to hear the ocean and the dolphins frolicking in the bay. The fog horn is almost lulling. And please remember… it’s a harbor! The fog horn has a job to do! However, for the guests who apparently can’t stand the noise (I will never understand,) the owners have complimentary ear plugs in the room. Why in the world someone would want to block out the sounds of the harbor is beyond me, but I think it’s a very courteous gesture.
All in all, I cannot recommend this place enough. We’re already figuring out how to go down for a couple nights in December. If you’re contemplating booking a room, quit thinking about it and just do it. You will NOT be disappointed!

I was very hesitant to book a room here based on the reviews of people bashing this place due to the fog horn, BUT I was so surprised because it wasn’t even that bad. I was expecting this loud thing, but it wasn’t. I actually laughed when I heard it, because it wasn’t even that loud. I’m a light sleeper and it was actually very soothing. This inn is isolated from the rest of the port which makes it very intimate, plus you get your own balcony.
We had the corner upstairs room and it was huge! In my opinion it was the best situated room, didn’t hear any of our neighbors.
The view from the room was no joke. It was gorgeous, we walked to Barbara’s fish trap to get some dinner to go, opened a bottle of wine and just enjoyed the sunset from the balcony!
I loved there was a fireplace in the room, easy to use too. There’s a flat screen tv but didn’t even use it because the atmosphere was enough. Bathroom was huge with great interior.
We didn’t find out till later but the mini bar has all sorts of wine glasses in the top cabinet. Also came with free water and snacks
I’m from Milpitas and this was a great staycation. definitely will be back

Gorgeous — Quaint — Dog-​Friendly :) Was delightfully surprised at how beautiful my room was! Felt completely spoiled here… Brought my pup; had a private grassy patio complete with lounging chairs and table to watch the sunset :) Housekeeping was so friendly and accommodating. Innkeeper, Melissa Rey, was a delightful as they come! …even had a doggie basket waiting for us (complete with treats, bowls, doggie bags and towel).

Obviously this review is going to buck the trend — and that’s fine.
In general, this is a very nice hotel. It’s clean. It’s spacious. It’s priced right. The bathroom is beautiful. The bed is comfortable. The cute little yard on the bottom floor rooms is a neat touch.
Yes, as the other reviews have mentioned — the foghorn can be an issue. BUT that’s ok, the hotel recognizes that and provides free ear plugs.
So here’s the issue — here’s what warrants a one star review.
The hotel does not have air conditioning … which, I understand, is quite normal in this part of the country. Again, that, by itself, is ok. BUT — if you happen to be coming here on a hot night then you most likely won’t get any sleep because you’ll be covered in sweat in a hot, humid room.
We called the «innkeeper» and asked about the lack of AC — her answer was «just open the door and let the air flow through».
First problem with that answer — opening ONE door does not allow air to «flow». You need two openings for air to flow. A first floor room does not have that.
Second problem with that answer — FOGHORN. Leaving the doors open increases the volume significantly, further preventing sleep.
The hotel acknowledges the problem of the foghorn by providing ear plugs. They could EASILY fix the issue of the lack of AC by putting a $ 20 fan in the closet. Seriously, that’s all it would take. If that had been done this would easily be a 4* hotel.
On a trip that took me from a fancy hotel in downtown San Fran, to a scum-​sucking backwater motel in Lone Pine to this place — this place was EASILY the worst sleep of the entire trip. If an hour’s rest at 1am can be called anything more than a nap.

This place is beautiful. We stayed in the Dunes suite (room #6) which is upstairs and offers beautiful views of the harbor at half moon bay. The hotel only has 6 suites so it is overall quiet and homey. The room is modern and very comfortable. The bathroom is massive and this room featured a large two person tub which was amazing and sooooo relaxing. It’s walking distance from great restaurants and there is a small beach just a few steps away. The three bottom rooms are pet friendly which is great. A couple of things kept this from being a five star place. #1 it’s right next to the airport so planes are constantly flying back and forth during the day and although they are single engine planes they are loud! #2 The bed was a very comfortable memory foam bed but it was so squeaky and loud ! Every time my husband made any small movements like changing sides or getting up to use the restroom it was very very loud and woke me up. #3 The walls are paper thin. We could hear entire conversations from the room next to us. Other that this place is great and the people are nice. We will definitely stay here again and next time we’ll bring our dog!

This is a great place to stay in the quite town of Half Moon Bay. The room was very clean and internet and TV were great. The only thing that may bother some is the fog horn. I was in the Montera Room — very nice!
For most nights, the fog horn, was OK with me, but one one night it was very loud– i had to use the ear plugs.
They provide ear plugs but if you are a light sleeper I would bring my own wax ones.
Other than this — this is a great place.

Wow… what a hidden gem! This place is only a 6 unit Inn but you cannot beat the price, location RIGHT on the water, and the Inn’s hospitality! We were greeted with an erray of free snacks and water and a nice bottle of wine for my husband’s Bday! The beds are super comfortable, and the size of the rooms is phenomenal. It’s right by Barbs Fish Trap and many other local favorite restaurants. At night the bay is lit up from the light on the hill to the right. Come on outside to the gas fire put and enjoy the sound of the rustling bay harbor and seals and the fog horn on the ocean. I’m so stoked I found this place!

We’ve had the pleasure of staying twice at the Inn, both times in one of the pet friendly rooms on the ground floor.
I have to admit, I don’t want this place to get too popular it’s already difficult to get a reservation sometimes (the secret’s out)!
We simply love this little Inn, tucked away on the harbor, with its tranquil views and dreamy, cottage feel.
The rooms are spacious and nicely appointed. We enjoy the Keurig coffee maker, the basket of snacks (included in your room) the excellent mattress, the large and beautiful bathrooms, and the very kind and friendly staff. The fenced in grassy area is perfect for our chihuahua (the Inn provides dog treats, and a food and water bowl in the room at check in).
The apartment-​sized refrigerator makes it easy to keep some breakfast and lunch items handy so you don’t have to eat out every meal. They also provide dishes, silverware, glasses, corkscrew, and two bottles of water.
Don’t worry about the fog horn, the Inn provides earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. We find it helps us sleep!
We have had two great experiences at the Inn at Mavericks and look forward to many, many more.

I really, really love the Inn at Mavericks! We booked four rooms and could not be more pleased. It was a wonderful getaway for my husband, my parents, in-​laws, and my sister’s family. The rooms are cute, spacious, and clean. Great for kids and pets, especially with the enclosed patio/​balcony space. The fire pit is great also. We hope to come and visit again soon with the pooch!

I was very pleased with my experience with the Inn at Mavericks. I had reservations for last month and need to reschedule my reservations due to an emergency. Allen, the innkeeper was very accessible and accommodating.
This place was worth the wait. My boyfriend and I stayed in «The Dunes» room. All though we only live and hour and a half away, this placed screamed vacation. The view from the balcony is amazing. I felt like we were in Europe with a view of the sea. The room was so romantic. The fireplace was a very nice touch.
We were in walking distance of the restaurants, and had lunch with a gift card we got at Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. Our entire experience was the perfect getaway.
My only complaint is we couldn’t stay longer.

We stayed at Inn at Mavericks in November. The outside of the inn is not fancy at all, but the Inn is right next to the water. We were assigned the Montara room and loved it!
Everything in the room (including the bathroom) appears to have been updated. The room was pretty large and the bathroom was large too. My favorite parts of the room were the view and the Tempur-​Pedic mattress. We could sit in the bed and see the water through our sliding glass door window and two other windows. It was our first time sleeping on that brand mattress and we both thought it was very comfortable.
The only things to really complain about are the price and the fog horn. The fog horn is not that loud and did not seem to affect our sleep, but it’s a little annoying.

This place is awesome!!! I can’t say enough about it! We have stayed here at least 4 times in the past 2 years because we love it so much! It’s the perfect place for relaxing. Wonderful view from every room (although the Montara room is our favorite), soothing sounds of the water (the foghorn doesn’t bother us, although they do supply earplugs if you want them), extremely comfortable bed, large bathroom with a soaking tub and every amenity you can think of! It’s a little on the pricey side (especially if you go during high season), but worth every penny! Close to so many great restaurants and shops that you’ll never want for things to do. If you’re looking for a luxurious spot to relax, you’ve found it!

We found the Inn through our friends who had been there two weeks prior with a new baby. We were celebrating our anniversary and we needed a pet friendly location and wanted to be on the water. (The Inn has 3 pet friendly rooms downstairs with a small fenced yard.) What a fabulous inn! I almost don’t want to write a review because I want to keep this jewel to myself.
The first thing I always do is check the bathroom and the bed for cleanliness. Our room passed with flying colors. The bed was very comfortable with extra blankets and 4 pillows. The white towels were high quality. There were special touches everywhere — complimentary bottled water, cookies, crackers, chips, fruit, dog bowls, dog treats, dog towel, a guest journal to write in, binoculars, chocolates and ear plugs. We’ve never stayed anywhere where they’re so generous and thoughtful.
The bathroom is large and modern with good water pressure and a great shower head. It also has a deep 2 person soaking tub and full length mirror.
The outside area was spotless (no prior pet evidence) with a manicured strip of lawn and patio chairs to watch the boats coming in and out and even people doing yoga on surfboards! So relaxing.
As others have mentioned, the fog horn can be distracting. I used the complimentary earplugs and slept pretty well. My husband didn’t use them and had a harder time sleeping. (Next time he’ll use them-​lol.)
We only wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be going back. Love this place.
PS-​My husband left his glasses in the room and Allen, the Inn Manager, called and texted him before we even made it home to let him know. He immediately mailed them to us. That’s service!

We stayed on Thursday night to Friday. I found this place by searching on Unilocal for places to stay in Half Moon Bay. I wanted to take my guy to a special place that he could wake up on his birthday and see a view with water and boats. The Inn At Mavericks did NOT disappoint! We stayed in the Montara suite and from the moment we walked in we were very happy.
When we arrived I went to the office and picked up my key in an envelope with instructions to my room. It was such a smooth process of checking in. There wasn’t anyone in the office at the time but when I had a question, I called the innkeeper, Allen and he answered promptly and answered my question. The bathroom was designed really nice with great amenities including 2 plush robes!
A complimentary snack basket and coffee machine with plenty of coffee to make 6 individual cups. We settled in, popped open a couple coor’s lights and headed to the sunny deck outside our room. It was a beautiful day to boot!
The bed and pillows were SO comfortable that when I woke up I didn’t have my usual back pain. I also slept through the night (with ear plugs for the fog horn) that in the morning I had to find out what I was sleeping on. It said Viscopedic… So I’m getting one for our house!
When we checked out we followed instructions and left the room key on the hook by the door outside and left.
I liked that I didn’t have to talk to anyone checking in or out. It was effortless experience and we both agree that we will only be staying at the Inn At Mavericks any time we feel we need to get away to Half Moon Bay!

We came in town this past Saturday night to re-​energize and change the scenery. We found this place through Unilocal,and we were hoping for a pleasant stay.
We stayed in Room #4, the Montara. It is in the upstairs west corner of the building.
Once inside the immediate impression was «WOW!»
The room was spacious, very clean, well decorated and had amazing views of Half Moon Bay out of all windows. The room has to have been renovated in the past couple years. The bathroom was also very large and well appointed. There was tile throughout the entire room.
The bar has a refrigerator, Kuerig single pod coffee maker, VCR/​DVD, microwave and a bucket full of complimentary snacks and water.
They have a nice couch, dining table and iHome inside as well. The cornerstone of the room is the cozy, natural gas fireplace with nice flatscreen TV hanging by it. You can lay on the California Tempurpedic King and see everything.
The room opens up out back to a nice sized balcony overlooking HMB. This is right on the beach. One of the most memorable experiences here will be the fog horns that blow every 10 seconds or so. Nothing like the sound of waves crashing, seagulls, boats and the fog horn. It was so tranquil and relaxing.
The grounds are so peaceful. With only six rooms onsite you feel like you have the place to yourself. They have a community fire-​pit just outside the east portion of the building that overlooks HMB as well.
The bottom floor rooms have great «back yards» that each have white picket fences to allow for dogs to roam safely.
There was an event center on property. There was also a workout facility across the street with complimentary access.
The Half Moon Bay Brewery, as well as other great shops and restaurants are hundreds of feet away and all within walking distance.
There honestly was a half moon over half moon bay when we stayed! Overall this place will be a long lasting memorable experience. I wish I would have stayed a week here!

I retract EVERYTHING I said about this place; the great location, view and great rooms-​it all doesn’t matter after our horrible experience today.
This is very unfortunate as I really do [did] love this place. Today is our 5th year anniversary and the plan was to stay at Mavericks with our 2 dogs and enjoy everything we loved about Half Moon Bay and this boutique hotel. Well, ya know what? We’re back home, and instead of having a nice evening, I’m writing this review.
I booked reservations last month, received a confirmation number and email-​anniversary weekend was set. We arrived today after driving an hour with our 2 dogs only to find out that they canceled our reservation in the system because they overbooked, without notifying us beforehand. That isn’t even the great part-​we were standing outside the office for 30 minutes to figure out what to do because no one was at the office to help us. I had to call the hotel line and emergency line numerous times to figure what the hell to do! The only help they were able to offer was put us in a room that was already booked by a guest and move his stuff out for the night because he wasn’t staying there tonight. The point, however, was to stay in a first floor room with a backyard because of our dogs.
Not to mention, the next hour was spent calling around Half Moon Bay and even Monterey for pet friendly places with vacancy for a night. No luck. Happy Anniversary, honey.
Way to go on maintaining repeat customers, Mavericks.

We came to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary and get away from it all (kids, work etc.) Thankfully Grandma and Grandpa were able to watch the DD’s.
We did a lot of research and it gets quite confusing to find a place for one night on a weekend. The reviews here seemed solid and we decided to take a risk on the foghorn.
From the second we walked in our room it smelled amazingly clean. The view of the ocean was amazing. Those that followed our recent bedbug motel story will be happy to know that I did a thorough check and there were no sign here :)
The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom was very luxurious. Love the soaking tub :) Nice to have the snack basket and keurig cofeemaker in the room plus the fridge and glasses/​plates etc.
As far as the foghorn goes it was fairly loud with the slider open, but with it closed it was very faint. If you are sensitive, bring earplugs, but otherwise you should be fine.
We can’t wait to return!
