Specialties
Challenge Horticulture (dba Half Moon Bay Orchids) has been growing a variety of high quality orchids since 1996. Unlike many of the larger orchid growers in the Bay Area, our orchids are grown on site from seed or flask. This simple, quiet life makes for happy orchids with racemes (commonly spikes) that may stay in bloom for four months or more. Long duration overseas transportation of mature plants is common for the commercial orchid industry. Half Moon Bay Orchids believes that such practices are traumatic to plant and planet alike. All of our orchids are grown in carefully controlled greenhouses; ideal conditions ensure the quality of the plant and reduce the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Currently in production are several varieties of Phaelanopsis, Cattleya, Oncidium, Zygopetalum and Cymbidium. Colors range from bone white to deep waxy oranges to delicate lavenders and even creamy browns.
History
Established in 1996.
Under the guidance of our orchid-loving founder and CEO, Jack Wu, Half Moon Bay Orchids’ nine full time and three part time employees work tirelessly to produce these beautiful flowers. The company has been family run from the start. Both Jack’s brother, Frank, and son, Michael, have pitched in to make the business what it is today.
Since its inception the operation has consisted of wholesaling to Bay Area florists, mostly on the Peninsula, and booths at several weekly farmers markets between Mill Valley and San Jose. Seeking to bring joy and beauty into the homes of all, Half Moon Bay Orchids has always sough to have prices that represent our effort and nothing more.
