There was a time, back when knighthood was in flower, when there were several extremely good pasticerrie in this area; those days are gone, but Hackensack Pastry Shop isn’t. Thank God. Yes, the pastry is wonderful, they were always known among the crowd back in the day for their cannoli, the best, and that bowl of filling that all right-thinking people fantasize about eating out of directly. But the season highlight is the ice cream and the Italian ice, and the SPUMONI. Simply put, you haven’t lived until you’ve had their spumoni. It’s a lost treat and it’s making, a lost art, but not here. Yes, it’s gotten smaller and more expensive, who cares, eat two and skip a manicure. The only Italian ice I’ve ever had that was better than theirs was Yum Yum, which used to be sold out of the back of a garage in Hoboken in the days when no one there could stand Sinatra. Today, it is the only Italian ice that doesn’t have an aftertaste that, I’m thinking, I don’t know, comes from HFCS and cheap flavoring, even though it’s sold at premium prices. Hackensack’s is fantastic, if they’re taking any shortcuts, they must use a magic wand. Always call first, they may not have what you like and they may not be open — it only operates now about seven months a year, and they take vacation during the summer as well.

This is a tough place to try out since they are closed so much. Limited amount of offerings, but what they have is quite good. Definitely try the cannoli. The filling was awesome. The cookies and biscotti were fresh and tasty. Give a call before you go, they are closed more than they are open.

I’m quite surprised this place only has 8 other reviews! This bakery has been here for many many years. It’s very different from any other bake shop I have been in but there are many reasons to come back… Description of this Wonderful Place: May look like a house to many, because it is attached to a house lol They have a small parking lot on the left side They have 20 min parking spaces in front, great for running in and out. They have some weird hours, so far I have seen them closed a few times especially on Mondays I believe they are also cash only but not really sure When you walk in they have barely anything on their shelves. To the right — homemade italian ices and ice cream and even spomoni. To the left — a small fridge almost empty with top shelf usually being, a chocolate cake, mini cream puffs and if we are lucky large cream puffs. 2nd shelf, eclairs, they have one with choco frosting and one plain, then a rum custard baba looking cake… then a huge metal bowl of cannoli cream which I would love to dip my face into lol The girl fills all cannoli’s by hand and then adds the nuts and powdered sugar. mmmmmmmmmmm The cannolis are probably the best I have ever had in my life and trust me I have had many before… The cream puff looks dry but it’s super moist and the custard OMG to die for… The center has italian cookies and biscuits… none of my favs but still yummy i’m sure… Cant wait to go back… what a treat!!! a Bit higher priced but don’t mind it for the quality…

I’ve been coming to hackensack pastry shop my whole life! Jack and Kathleen do a fantastic job! Their cookies and pastries are always fresh! Their Italian ice and ice cream, AMAZING! Best part, everything is made on location! Italian ice — must have lemon! So refreshing on a hot sticky summer day! Ice cream — mint chip and butter pecan — awesome! Atmosphere is unique! The pastry shop has been around for over 70 years, lots of character from the minute you walk in! Must try when you’re in the area! They are open from mid November until New Year’s Day and then mid may until Labor Day!

Friendly family run place. They have yummy cookies and the cannolis are amazing. They pipe it fresh when you order. The shells are crispy and the filling is creamy and sweet. Love it. They gave my son a free cookie while we waited. Nice big parking lot. Highly recommend.

Not only have I had better, but I have had better from HPS! In the old days the cookies were tastier, the cannoli filling was less grainy and it was Less expensive! I don’t mind paying for quality but I went in tonight asking for sugar cookies and I got plain shortbread cookies. And they were not even good shortbread. I’ll remember the days when we would go there every Sunday before going to Nanina’s house. We used to wait in line at the holidays just to shop there. Not anymore.

Wow! Away with diets! Yes…schedule is different… but…oh… Cannolis are scrumptious… Arriving for my June trip… we walked in… and we’re given a taste of fresh vanilla ice cream followed by a scoop of cherry vanilla… ah… Then tasted their cannoli cake… to die for… add friendly plus… enjoy!

Another reviewer said that the place is strange and looks a little barren. I’d describe it as unique. It does look barren for a bakery, but you know that everything is fresh. They don’t have a lot of items, but what they have is the best. I go there specifically for their cannolis which are the best in the world. And they make them in front of you while you wait. I am truly addicted to them. The owner and the other people there are all very friendly. They do have a weird schedule but I have memorized it. They are open from November to New Year’s and then close for the winter til around Mother’s Day. They stay open til about Labor Day except for a week in August and then close til November. They get a lot of teasing about being closed so much from their customers. They just opened again this week, and I already got my cannoli fix. My diet??? What’s that?

Not only great cannoli, but great pastries in general. The lady who owns the place is very nice, but they are closed from new years to the end of March, as they go to Florida during those winter months. But I can see how people will come from all over(even the west coast) to buy Italian pastries here

This is a strange place! They have hands down the best Italian Ices anywhere. All of their flavors are good especially the chocolate. The problem ISTHATTHEYARENEVEROPEN! THEYAREALWAYSONVACATIONFOR2WEEKSOR A MONTHEVERTYIMEYOULOOK They also have cannolis but the place looks barren. It makes no sense at all… or does it HMMM? If they were open year round and actually had a full service bakery, it would get 5 stars just on the ITALIANICES alone.
