Courtyard Fountains Retirement Community

This place offers Independent Living (where residents have their own apartment) as well as the Assisted Living (more of a hospital style living accommodations). I have only seen the Independent Living portion of this facility, as my mother in law was a resident here for a little while, only a couple of months.
There is no question that this place is a nicer facility than some of the other similar communities in the area, it is quite pricey as well. They offer a lot of services for the residents and a lot of activities.
I am quite disgusted by the running of and operation of this place, as well as by some of the people who work here. In addition, I feel like I must say some of the staff are very kind, wonderful, genuine, and interested in what they do. The only reason I have given 2 stars for this place is because of some of the kind hands on people who do dedicate their energy in a great and meaningful way. Sadly, the ones who are in charge are the ones who should be ashamed of their deceitfulness, down right lies and shady behavior.
Before we moved my mother in law in here, we went down and took a tour of the facility and met with Anne, she is the one in charge of leases and new residents. It was tricky, as my husband and I live out of state, so we relied on the information Anne told us, as my mother in law isn’t really ever honest, sometimes on purpose and other times due to being confused and just not listening. When we were here, we also had to co-​sign the forms, as my mother in law wasn’t approved on her own, and we were subsidizing what she wasn’t able to afford. Due to this factor, I wanted to make sure we knew what types of other services she was able to have billed onto her monthly rent; there were meals ($ 9 each), the salon services, housekeeping, happy hour that includes 2 glasses of wine (what a great idea as every resident takes several medications that warn not to drink while taking them), purchases at their little thrift store, and many other optional services to rack up quite a bill. This was very concerning to us, as she has a hard time being honest, she has an even harder time trying to live within her budget. We were fearful of getting her monthly rent bill and seeing $ 800 in additional charges, on top of the expensive rent and a non refundable community fee of $ 1,000 (that was explained as a refundable deposit at first, that was another issue and area we were lied to, by Anne). Anne told us that we could have a limit put on her account so she wasn’t able to spend more than the set amount we decided; she said we could call at any time after she moves in and ask this to be done. Well, when we called to create the cap, we were told this was impossible; when we asked Anne about it she claimed she never said such a thing; although my husband, his brother and myself were all present and recall it being said.
There were multiple instances where we felt deceived by Anne, we had been conned and she duped us into a whole lot of money. The entire place smells terribly, there isn’t thorough or clear communication, the place is kinda chaotic and there isn’t enough parking (it’s all 2 hour parking for guests), and it was a complete nightmare for us. I could go on for quite some time about the terror and chaos we experienced for the short 2 months she was a resident here. This place looks and seems truly amazing, and I am sure it can be for the right residents; however, this was nothing close to our experience.

Our parents were some of the first residents at The Courtyard Fountains and lived there for 14 years. They investigated and visited several communities before making the decision to move there after downsizing from a large four bedroom home to a roomy two bedroom condo. This was one was of the kindest and most thoughtful gifts they gave us, as we knew they were living in safe, wonderfully kept, and well managed community, where help was always available and they were proud to invite family or friends over eat (health and good food in a lovely surrounding).
Their apartment was comfortable and homey, the staff was always friendly, warm and caring, and Mary, a key manager, has a rare combination of compassion and managerial skills in working with the staff and residents.
As our parents aged we felt a great sense of peace knowing they were in a safe community, which they enjoyed and provided transportation for stores and doctors, opportunities for outings, daily activities along with frequent special social events and new friends, who became treasured old friends.
Yes, like any place there were changes through the years, which were some times difficult for them to accept, as will be the case in any similar community. In each case, Mary and her staff try to make the transition as easy as possible, and in each case everything worked out.
The Courtyard Fountains continues to be an excellent home and community and I strongly recommend you check it out before making one of the most important decisions in your life.
