Churromania

I don’t know why I have never visited Grapevine Mills until yesterday. And upon coming to this mall, I was surprised by how small it was. For some reason I thought it would be bigger than Katy Mills and maybe not much smaller than Sawgrass Mills. But either way, it was a nice reprieve to find Churromania.
But I did not go to Churromania for churros this time (even though they’re good). I came strictly to lunch. On Venezuelan bites, to be specific.
It is unfortunate to see that many of the Dallasites don’t seem to know what to order at this relatively exotic place. I saw people just buying one of their shakes or just bottled waters.
But this is one of the very few places in the area where you can get authentic tequeños (Venezuelan cheese sticks) and even Venezuelan empanadas.
While the tequeños are not the best I had (I have liked several other renditions), they were by far the best I have had in Dallas thus far, without having to fry them at home. I have not yet tried any of the Venezuelan places in the Fort Worth side of the metroplex at this time. For this reason, I probably wouldn’t hesitate ordering it again.
The empanadas were a nice surprise — they were Venezuelan style, fried, using corn dough instead of flour, and tasted great. I would not hesitated ordering this again as well. They had shredded beef, cheese and chicken empanadas and I went for the chicken. They sell a cilantro/​onion mayo-​based sauce (salsa verde) separate, which I thought went well with the empanadas. I’m used to this being free but it seems like Churromania is still working on the kinks in developing its Venezuelan menu as they are sorting their suppliers. They started selling tequeñon (large-​sized tequeños), aside from the Venezuelan empanadas (they have the regular flour based empanadas in the menu).
And if their trajectory continues, I can only expect to see more Venezuelan things being added. Hopefully chicha (thick version of Horchata), papelón drink, cachitos and pasteles andinos are not so far behind.
For Venezuelan expats, this is, so far, the best and convenient place for a taste of home.

OMG… never seen an espresso so poorly prepared. Not sure what it was.
They had a nice espresso machine but clearly no clue what a finished product is supposed to be. Had to throw it in the trash and order a double shot from Sonic with a kids 1% milk.
The churros look ok if that’s your thing. Maybe the ½ mile walk to Starbucks would’ve been worth it. I had Über drop me off at the mall while 4 Wheel Parts has my truck.
