Shirley Chan, MD

I absolutely LOVE and recommend Dr. Shirley Chan. She delivered my daughter, Mya three years ago and the experience was amazing! I was «at-​risk» throughout my pregnancy and she was wonderful in making me feel at ease through out process. Whenever I had a question or concern, she had no problem explaining everything to where I understood and felt comfortable.
Not to mention, I love her spunkiness! I always enjoyed visiting her office. When you’re pregnant, you’re not always feeling 100% and I always left her office with a smile on my face.
The office staff was amazing as well! Super friendly, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. They’re the best!

Dr Chan has been an angel in disguise she is by far the best doctor I have come in contact with not to mention the most informative too. When my husband and I decided to try and have a child I choose Dr Chan because of her excellent referrals. Before deciding on any one doctor I wanted to be sure to pick the right one, and I am so glad I did. I had such a wonderful experience I want try for a second baby asap. If anyone is in need of a doctor who actually cares about your well being she is it. Thanks again Dr Chan :)

I was referred to Dr Chan from a friend and I was SO happy to hear good reviews of her over Unilocal and my friend. She took me in when I was 7 months pregnant (or more) bc we switched health care providers, and when I was calling around some places and they wouldn’t accept me bc i was more than 6 mths preggos. Anyways, I stepped into her office and she was so kind and sweet! Although one of her nurses (or med assistant) wasn’t very sociable, but still respectable.
I was induced bc I was so big and it looked like I was gonna go over my due date. She gave me the choice and the consequences of either and i choose to. They called her once I was ready and my water broke (a whole day after!). They called Dr. Chan up but she came on time and was ready to rock and roll. There’s an on going joke that she delivers big babies bc she is so small (my darling baby girl was 9.8Ibs!) but she did a great job and I was satisfied with everything.
I highly recommend her.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr Chan! She is comforting while getting the dreaded paps. She loves her job and it shows. I highly recommend her to everyone. My birthing experience was surprisingly very relaxing. She is soothing and a great person to have while you’re in labor, she’s a great coach. Loved the no surprise dr in the L&D ward. Would love to go back to her if I could move back to Glendale. Don’t give it a second thought, if you can get in to see her do it! It’s rare she takes in new patients but if you have the chance do it! Also cancellations may be something you want to avoid. She runs a tight ship and is extremely busy you may not be lucky enough to see her for another 8 weeks!

Let’s face it, no one likes getting a Pap smear, but Dr. Chan made it extremely comfortable. Best Pap smear I’ve gotten, if there is such a thing!
Also, I was a new patient and was in and out of her office in less than an hour, including time for filling out new patient forms. Fast, efficient, friendly doctor with awesome bedside manners! I’m looking forward to having Dr. Chan as my obstetrician when I get pregnant!

Stupid and rude costumer service representative. Never calling back again

Went to see her because I had one large fibroid that needed to be taken out. After waiting for over an hour in a tiny uncomfortable room, had a quick exam, after which she sent me for unnecessary blood tests. Dr Chan said she does perform fibroid removal surgeries but that she does them only through C-​section!!! Whaaaat!!! I mean, my fibroid was right at the v opening, she touched it — that’s so close it was… why not remove it vaginally, but subject me to a huge unnecessary (again) surgery. why?
naturally i went and found a normal gynecologist who gives a damn and took out the fibroid vaginally within a week of our first appt.
this is my ratiing for dr shirley chan. i would not suggest you going to her with fibroid problems. period.

Dr. Chan is the most wonderful, caring, and attentive doctor you will ever find. I had a high risk pregnancy (preterm labor) and she went above and beyond. Not only to ensure the safety and health of me and my baby but she also was extremely sensitive and kind. I was hospitalized at 26 weeks and then sent home for 10 weeks of bed rest. I can recall one evening I had an emergency and called her after hours. Dr. Chan stayed on the phone with me for over 15 minuets answering my questions and calming my nerves. This is just one example of the level of care you receive as her patient. Dr Chan delivered my perfect, healthy, FULL TERM baby girl this January. My family and I are so grateful to have been blessed to have her through a very scary and difficult pregnancy.

Wow amazing doctor just saw her today she was so comfortable to talk to. I never met a doctor so nice like her. I recommend to everyone to go by her.

The receptionist here is so rude!!! I havnt even seen the doctor yet and I’m sure I never will want to after the first phone call I made. I called to make an appointment for a second opinion, AS A CASH PT (doctors take cash patients more serious than ones with insurance), and the girl who picked up the phone said «she doesn’t have time for second opinions. «really? I am so disappointed because I herd such good things about this doctor. After I questioned why she’s too busy for «second opinions» her answer was, «she doesn’t have time. If you want an appointment anyways it’s gonna be next year. «working at a doctors office myself, that is NOT a way one should talk to a patient… especially a CASH patient! Ugh.

I have been going to Dr. Chan since 2008! She also cared for me when I had my daughter in 2009. She is very informative and caring. Answers all your questions and concerns in a nurturing manner. LOVE HER!!!

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Chan. had two beautiful twin girls delivered via cesarean. her staff is so sweet and exceptionally professional. I had great care, and she took every precaution necessary to assure we where as well informed about the state of my girls since day one. it got to the point where I was seeing a perinatalogist and Dr. chan twice a month, but I delivered what is considered full term for twins, no complications, no nicu, I was out of the hospital in two and a half days. when she counsels you, she is non judgmental and down to earth, no doctor jargon and make eye contact. you are wise to choose her to Deliver your loved one. she is high in demand so getting an appointment is the hard part… because she’s that good.

I’ve been with Dr Chan 12 yrs now. She delivered all 3 of my children. I’m disappointed to read negative reviews. Quite frankly Dr Chan is not a money hungry lady. If anything she’s a VERY ethical Dr and won’t put her career or license on the line. If u prefer shady Dr, then don’t come here. If u want to hear honest opinions and professional opinions, then Dr Chan is the OB to talk to! Sure, there are times she has to address your weight issue but it’s for your own health and better delivery if pregnant. She always suggested options when in doubt of a contraceptive, a birth delivery method, safe sex, etc. The woman really tries to be genuine and neutral for u to decide what’s best for yourself. Every one is different, no body’s the same and she will go accordingly with that. She’s an honest Dr in every sense, I wouldn’t go or change to anyone else! I moved out of the area and drive almost an hour to continue seeing her.
Her staff is awesome too! They stay ethical and honest, yet friendly. I gotta admit, not all medical staff remembers your face and name and/​or personal small talk u do with them. Sure, they get busy, but they truly are customer service oriented to help u in the best way possible! Love this place for everything I can say and think of!

I LOVE Dr. Chan! She delivered my two older kids and now she is my OB for my third. I really can’t say enough great things about her. She is very caring and knows her stuff. Her staff is always very friendly and phone calls are always returned in a timely manner. I work at a hospital and Dr. Chan came very highly recommended from all of the nurses.

Dr Chan delivered my first son in 2009 and will be delivering my second son in July of this year. I will never see another OB! I had to change insurance companies since my last pregnancy and I made sure she took my new potential insurance before applying for it.
She is incredibly respectful of your wishes (natural or not) and isn’t «quick to cut» unless it’s an emergency or medically required.
Her bedside & office visit manners are great, not to mention she’s absolutely adorable!
Her nurses and office staff are all very sweet and helpful.
I highly recommend her for your baby-​having needs or just an OB:)

DR. Chan is a GREAT doctor. I have been her patient for 15 Years and have refereed a lot of people to her. She delivered my 2 kids and 7 nieces and nephews. She is great at what she does and very knowledgeable. I have never heard of anyone I know and I know about 25 patients of hers that she has ever forced anyone to have a c– section I am not sure what these other people wrote about her but if you want an honest doctor who knows her profession well and want to be in good hands you must see Dr. Chan.

Dr. Chan is an amazing Dr. I’ve known her for several years now. She truly cares about the well being of her patients. Weather you are pregnant or not, she provides amazing care. She has delivered two of my three children and has been there for me whenever I’ve needed her. She encourages vaginal delivery unless it wouldn’t be safe for mom or child. She’s not money hungry and DOES NOT encourage c.section.
Her staff is very helpful and friendly. I couldn’t ask for a better doctor.

Dont even bother if you are a new patient! Especially if you have HMO, this woman is a money hungry b*#@h! I called and made an apt after i received an authorization letter from my medical provider 2 months ago! I waited two months, took a day off work and they today tell me sorry we cant see u because of something of your insurance but the truth is because they r too over-​covered with members! Sad sad office

I chose Dr. Chan to be my OB because of her positive Unilocal reviews. I had a new insurance and wanted to find someone friendly towards natural birth.
Well, I really regret going with Dr. Chan. She is NOT a good match for those who want as few interventions as possible. I want to repeat that. She really is NOT a good match for those who want as natural a birth as possible.
I feel like I should have known better and I should have switched OBs, even if at the last minute. It is up to the patient to choose an OB they are comfortable with and share beliefs with. That being said, she still only gets 2 stars.
Positives: Dr. Chan is upbeat and cheerful. She is like a little energizer bunny. She greets each patient in a very friendly manner.
Negatives:
— She does not take her time with the patients (probably because she is so busy).
— In order to get questions answered, you have to be a bit assertive. She answers in a quick, curt and textbook answer. She has never asked if I have any questions for her.
— She really stresses weight issues. ex: I am a slim, healthy, athletic woman and Dr. Chan made a huge deal about my weight gain during pregnancy. I figured as long as I was eating healthy, if I gained weight my body needed it and it would be fine. I got quite a lecture from Dr. Chan several times during the pregnancy despite me telling her I was comfortable with my size. She says they recommend gaining 25lb (it’s actually 25−35lb and dependent on how big you were before hand). I gained 43lb. At the 6 week checkup, I had lost 27 pounds. I felt fine with where I was and I know that I will continue to lose weight in a healthy and gradual way. I assume I will be back to pre-​pregnancy weight in a couple months. Dr. Chan saw that I lost 27lb and said, «See, I told you you shouldn’t have gained so much weight.»
— she is intervention heavy. ex: at my 38 week appt., She told me that my amniotic fluid was low and it needed to be monitored. It was at a 9 and she said if it was at an 8 when I came back in 3 days, we had «to get the baby out.» I had just seen my specialist a few days earlier and so called and asked if my fluid was low then. He told me that anything above 5 was fine, that it is often lower in the Summer. My fluid went up a great amount just with me drinking water, but if it had gone down just a tiny bit, I would have been induced when I didn’t HAVE to be.
— she referred to my pregnancy as high risk repeatedly, when it barely was. In my prenatal tests my Inhibin A was up one number above normal. This qualified me to see a specialist (whom I loved). Every single visit except my 38 week one went great with low blood pressure, baby measuring perfectly, etc. Even the specialist said a few years ago, my score would have been within normal, yet Dr. Chan repeatedly said I had a «high risk» pregnancy and that could get in the way of having less interventions.
Not Supporting Natural:
Dr. Chan told me she only had two requirements for birth…1) continuous fetal monitoring 2) a heplock. I already needed continuous monitoring because I was gbs +, so I thought this wasn’t a problem at all.
Well, I had a wonderful birthing experience at Glendale Adventist. My husband and I were relaxed and in love and worked as a team to get my baby girl out in a calm environment. Luckily, nothing went wrong (I was not against interventions if they did, AT ALL). Dr. Chan came in when baby girl was already in sight and the nurses were telling me to wait for the doctor, maybe 3 – 5 minutes before she came out. Up till then we had a calm, happy birth. Dr. Chan had told me we could push in different positions, but I doubt she EVER does this unless there is someone there arguing with her. I asked her and my nurse asked her and she just started talking quickly about the reasons why she liked stirrups. Ok — I wasn’t going to argue. I change my position get in the stirrups (against gravity) and Dr. Chan yells out when to push. She actually yelled, like it was a high pressure situation. There was no high pressure, everything was happening exactly how it should have up to that point and without her help the little girl was almost out. I had told her I also wanted to push when I needed to, but no, Dr. Chan wanted me to push when she wanted me to, she counted down in a loud voice from ten and then yelled push. A kind nurse whispered in my ear to push when I felt the urge (which I was planning to do anyways). I did push my last two pushes when I didn’t feel the urge against my best judgement. I had a small tear and I believe that is when it happened.
After the baby girl was delivered, Dr. Chan wasn’t happy with the the amount of bleeding, so I told her we could use pitocin to deliver the placenta. She then started lecturing me saying something like, «I told you you should have used…» I honestly didn’t want to listen, I wanted to bond with my gir

Dr Chan has helped us to deliver two baby girls. Through both pregnancies she always answered all my questions and addressed every concern I had. Her staff is wonderful as well, especially Patty!
My first daughter had to be born by emergency c-​section after a long time in labor, my high blood pressure, and the fact that she had merconium (among other things). Dr Chan did such a wonderful job, my incision looks great, and I always felt that I was in excellent hands. If we ever have another she will be my only choice.
One word of warning, if you want to see her for an annual well woman visit realize that you will have to schedule a few months in advance, and pregnant woman come first. Of course since she was my Dr during both pregnancies I actually appreciate that fact ;-)
