I’ve patronized a lot of libraries and this one is pretty phenomenal. When I jokingly told one of the librarians recently that they pretty much have everything but a coffee bar, he deadpanned they’re building one in the new addition. And he was serious! Every book I’ve wanted to see, they’ve had. They have a great periodicals section with pretty much every magazine that matters and the New York Times and Wall Street Journal in addition to the local and state newspapers. You can check out electronic books, digital music and even — I kid you not — a freaking fishing pole if you’d like to do a little angling at Scott County Park or on North Elkhorn Creek. This place even provides free notary service. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’d even wash your car for you if you ask nicely. All in all, one of the best libraries I’ve visited and a great community asset for Kentucky’s ninth-largest city.

I feel like everything in my life is breaking. The hot water heater. The water pipes. My truck. My hearing aid. My body. My laptop. Even my freakin’ website doesn’t work at the moment. GAH! It’s been one of those winters where I just want to disappear under a pile of fleece blankets and emerge when spring arrives. But… I can’t do that. Life goes on. However, when you write a blog, Unilocal reviews, emails, and do lots of research online to help with upcoming plans and ideas(like… building a house), you can only go so many days before the lack of a working computer drives you mad. Your phone can only do much, and your hands start to hurt after awhile. What sort of saved me? This library. I am sooooo thankful for this library! My town’s library is too small(and is actually way out of my way on my routes to/from work) and Lexington is too far. Georgetown? Right in the middle and less than 10 minutes from where I work. Perfect. They’ve got quite a few computers available for patron usage, up to two hours a day. I am not going every day nor am I getting EVERYTHING done that I need, but it has been so nice to come here a couple times and TYPE things on a KEYBOARD and not stare at a tiny phone screen. I’ll be coming here a lot in the next few weeks until I save up enough money to buy a new laptop. As for the rest of the library — it’s really nice. New-ish and spacious with an eye-grabbing kids area off to the side and a decent selection of books, magazines, and media surrounding a couple work tables. There’s even a cozy genealogy room with several lamp-lit tables. It’s not a large library, but they offer so much — which makes me happy. Everyone is friendly and the self-checkout enables speedy checkouts if you’re in a hurry like I usually am. Thanks again, Scott County Library. You’re swell.

I’ve had my ups and downs with Scott County Library. But, I’m becoming more and more pleased. When I first moved to Georgetown, I thought it was adorable. Then I soon realized that small towns have small library selections. It made me homesick for the three rows of kids movies I was accustomed to at my old library. A year ago, I couldn’t renew books online and had to call or stop by to do business. As a result, I rarely visited. However, now I can renew books online up to 3 times and put books on hold. That makes life so much easier! I now visit often and don’t have to feel I have to venture out the 20 minute drive from my house every single week. I’ve also attended 2 writing workshops they hosted recently and was really pleased with them. They have plans to expand and I see the place getting even better. Definitely stop by if you live in the area.
