Specialties
At Mohonk Preserve, you can enjoy scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and peace & quiet – all just 90 miles from New York City. There are carriage roads and trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The internationally renowned «Gunks» cliffs offer world-class technical rock climbing routes. From the Preserve, you can also access a broader network of carriage roads and trails along the Shawangunk Ridge.
We safeguard and manage over 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, forests, fields, streams, ponds, and other unique and beautiful places. Our education programs for children and adults promote understanding of and excitement about nature, and our «living laboratory» of Preserve lands advances scientific knowledge on critical environmental issues.

The origins of the Preserve date back to 1869 when twin brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley purchased Mohonk Lake and established the Mohonk Mountain House. The «property» of The Mohonk Trust on that day in 1963 consisted of $ 100, a gift from Mabel Craven Smiley.
This was a unique experiment in conscientious natural area management that involved connecting people to nature and to each other. Since then, The Mohonk Trust, which became Mohonk Preserve, Inc. in 1978,
