I have been a member of shapemakers For 5 years now and I love it! It’s always clean and everyone that works there are nice and helpful. I feel very comfortable and that helps me get a good workout in:) The classes are so much fun too!

I wanted to be a member. I am new to the area and looking around for a gym. Moving is a hassle with finding new salons, doctors, gyms, etc. My time is valuable so I do the process of elimination of potential gyms and come up with a short list before I take the time to view the gyms in person. I liked what I saw on the Shapemakers web page and I sent an e-mail inquiry over a month ago. I received a prompt reply with the standard sales pitch and«Memberships are in the price ranges from $ 39-$ 468.» Yikes! I sent a second inquiry stating what I was interested in(membership and yoga/zumba classes and was there an enrollment fee?) and could I get a more specific response before I visited the gym? $ 39-$ 468 is quite a price range! That was February 5th and it is now March 14th: no response. It’s unfortunate that a gym treats its potential customers like they wandered on to a used car lot. My advice, look elsewhere.

I’ve known about Shapemakers for a long time. I was a member in the early 2000s back at the old location near Figarden. Even at the time, I remember thinking this gym has so much potential, especially being an all women gym. My only issue back then was the customer service at the front desk. There used to be this older lady at the front desk who not only had attitude, but acted as if we had to beg her to join the gym. Her treatment was horrible, however, I ignored it because of the convenience and because everything else about the gym was decent. Recently, after moving back to Fresno I decided to check out this gym again. As I walked in I noticed these young girls at the front desk. Immediately I was impressed that they had decided to listen to the complaints of the members about previous customer service. But, I was so wrong. I was surprised at the service given by some. I am sure the owner/manager would be surprised at the immaturity of some of these ladies. I stood there for about 10 minutes before anyone would even acknowledge me and when I requested information the girl at the front desk seemed unable to multitask and acted as if it was a burden to give out information. Not to mention her attitude when answering questions was unprofessional and not inviting, it made me want to leave. Immediately I was disappointed by the service, especially since the next day there was a girl who was much nicer working the front desk. I think the owner/manager would be surprised how much this makes a difference in how may members join. I realized that whoever thought of changing the location was not very thoughtful. I mean, to have the area where classes are taught in the middle of the gym is simply annoying. No, I do not want to listen to zumba music while I’m on the treadmill and no, I do want everyone working out watching me do zumba or pilates. The floorplan is probably the worst I’ve seen in any gym. The location is smaller than their previous location so it seems that everything is cramped up more. The hours are horrendous. I mean this gym has so much potential, but seriously you close at 8 and don’t open on sundays? Is it targeted for people who don’t work? I actually couldn’t believe the times when they told me! It seems like it needs a new business model. Another surprising thing has to be the membership rates. They want you to commit to a year either by paying up front, paying ~100 initiation fee, and then charging 40 – 50 a month. I get the feeling that the owner/manager is set in her ways. They charge more, but offer less. They don’t offer anything the gyms around fresno offer: they don’t offer gym transfers, pool, specials, high tech equipment(the treadmills don’t even have a place to plug in your headphones). They have a month to month option, but of course the fee is way higher. Other little things are: parking is terrible compared to the old location, bathrooms are pretty clean, no towels, one drinking fountain, etc. I really wish I could give this gym more stars because it does have so much potential to be something great in Fresno. There is definitely clientele for an all woman gym and I just wish this one could be better.

Shapemakers would be a great gym to work out at(and probably would’ve gotten a 4 or 5 rating from me) if they had a separate workout room for their classes. Unfortunately, they do all of their classes in the middle of the gym right in front of all the equipment. And I cannot even describe how incredibly annoying it is to watch(and have to listen to) a loud, obnoxious Zumba class while you’re running on the treadmill. This crappy setup of the gym is the sole reason I won’t be renewing my membership.

I think John needs to get better information. This gym didn’t up and close. They moved to a new location. They are now located at Herndon/First. This was no secret either. For months it has been plastered on the windows of the Bullard/Marks location that they would soon be moving to the new location. Drive by the old location, it’s still plastered on the windows. It has the new address and contact info in huge letters. They also sent letters notifying members of the changes. Hell, an article was written in the paper back in Dec 09 talking about the plans to open the new location. Of course they continue selling memberships, they own several gyms throughout town, that you are allowed to use. The new location is smaller than they Bullard/Marks as it doesn’t have an indoor pool, but you are allowed to use the pool at their location on Blackstone/Shaw(formally Dan Gamel gym) Another thing that is odd. Shapemakers 2000 is a womens only gym, what the hell is John doing joining there anyways? John is sure a strange name for a lady.

I recently moved back to Fresno from the Bay Area. So I decided to look for my old gym… Shapemakers. I was a member back in 1992. To my surprise they were still around and moved locations. I rejoined a few months ago, and i am enjoying every minute, I love that I can workout and not worry about guys staring or making comments. I feel very comfortable at Shapemakers. They will be opening a 2nd location by Herndon and First very soon. I cant wait because it will take me 2 minutes to get there. If you want a gym that you can«workout» in this is your gym;)

I used to workout here after school a couple of years back. I liked the fact that it was a women’s only gym. I think I feel more comfortable doing my workouts in a non-co-ed environment. Their workout equipment and machine selection wasn’t over the top, but there were at least a few of each to thoroughly workout each of your major muscle groups. There were plenty of free weights and cardio machines as well. All in all, I enjoyed the environment here and I think I’d join this gym again if I ever moved back into the area.
