A «Mid-​Westerner», Dr. Henstorf was born and raised in Shenandoah, Iowa. He attended college at The University of Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-​Medicine. He continued his education in Iowa City and earned a second Bachelor of Science degree in Medicine — P.A. from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Henstorf subsequently attended the University of Missouri College of Medicine, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1988. His additional honors during his medical school training include election to the Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. He received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Academic and Clinical Proficiency. He was the first recipient of the prestigious Mid-​America Orthopaedic Association’s Traveling Residency. He utilized this time to complete a Traveling Fellowship in Total Joint Arthroplasty at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago under the direction of Drs. Jorge Galante and Aaron Rosenberg.

Was the only doctor who would take me as a post-​op patient following a knee replacement done by an out-​of-​area surgeon. He told me he was a physician first and even though Medicare wouldn’t pay him because it was less than 3 months after surgery, he would oversee my recovery. I told him he could do my other knee. I admire his integrity. And he did a beautiful job on my other knee even though he told me it was one of the worst he’d ever worked on. Gods bless him! And thank you!

After herniating my L5 disc in early 2012, I met with Dr. Henstorf to discuss my options. He was very thorough and made sure I understood the choices and probable outcomes of each. If he can find a way to not operate, he wants that for his patients more than surgery… I appreciated that approach. He also encouraged me to meet with a peer of his to review my case and after much discussion we decided to fuse my L5 and S1 vertebrae.
His staff is amazing and always treats me warmly and have made sure all my needs are met — from next appointments to insurance — everything was handled for me and I am always kept in the loop.
I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Henstorf! He’s been amazing and literally saved my VERY active lifestyle! I appreciate his direct approach and needed it to help me set the correct expectations for my surgeries and outcomes.
I can honestly say that after living for years with back pain, I am now pain free, back to my normal physical activities and a little over 3 years to the day of the first surgery, just had Dr. Henstorf remove the hardware from my back fusion… YES — I trusted him THAT MUCH to go back in!
I feel FANTASTIC! Best of luck to everyone who’s going through an upcoming surgery! Dr. Henstorf is a wonderful man and physician in my grateful opinion!

Yes, Dr. Henstorf will give you the time necessary but that’s all he gave me unless of course you count being patronized. I got a lot of that. I also got a few auto mechanic references with some repetition thrown in. I was told by his staff that he was ‘direct,’ but I think they’ve confused being ‘direct’ with being insulting. Not only did I leave his office with a poor prognosis — which was bad enough, but adding insult to injury, I left being even more hurt by his presentation. Regardless of the situation, I don’t appreciate being talked down to, irrespective of one’s bias.

I ended up deciding on a knee replacement after putting it off for years. I have nothing but praise for Dr. Henstorf. He spent a lot of time with me explaining procedures and answering all of my questions prior to and following surgery. I am on the mend, doing physical therapy and am looking forward to having a more active, pain-​free life. Thank you Dr. Henstorf!

I am a health care provider myself, and I strive to provide for my own patients the kind of care I want to receive when I am the patient. That kind of care is what I have always received from Dr. Henstorf over the 25+ years I have known him. He is the gold standard by which I evaluate all of my other health care providers. He is both a great listener and a great explainer. He is warm and personable and very respectful of my time and generous with his own time. He is conservative and thoughtful in his treatment recommendations, and he has resolved every problem I have brought to him. His office is always clean and neat.

I met Dr. Henstorf only recently and I am as impressed as I could possibly be. After seeing another Orthopedic for several months and experiencing pain, swelling, and lack of mobility after surgery, I went to Dr. Henstorf for a consultation. Keep in mind I was potentially on the verge of medically retiring from my job due to my condition. Dr. Henstorf spent more time with me in one consultation than my previous Dr. did in ten appts. Ultimately Dr. Henstorf took the time and care to look at my condition, research the potential problems, and provide a reasonable solution. I had a corrective surgical procedure and within a day I felt as if someone removed an ice pick from my ankle. I have no doubt Dr. Henstorf saved my career. Thank you SIR!
