Specialties

Gravel & Grind is a bicycle studio and espresso bar. We build, rent and sell steel bikes for adventures big and small. Specialties include touring, town, dirt road and bike packing bikes, all made for the long haul. Our service shop tunes, builds and rebuilds bicycles to make them more useful and comfortable. The coffee side of things is focused on craft coffee: our hand built pour bar features a daily selection of 3 single origin coffees and our espresso menu is classic and simple. We also do some killer artisan toast. Come see our shop in Downtown Frederick, located in a 115 year old Grain Elevator!

History

Established in 2014.

Gravel & Grind was founded in 2014 by two cyclists with a passion for coffee, camping and rad stuff. We have grown our business through community support and the passion of fellow riders and coffee lovers. It’s been a great trip so far.

Best waffle I think I’ve ever had… Light and fluffy and tasted like vanilla pound cake, all at once.
However, the rest of my experience was disappointing. I was excited because I wanted to break out and support a local coffee shop. Plus, I like strong coffee and strong flavor in general. But the Johnny Cash I had was awful– bitter, lacking in flavor other than coffee– and it’s a premade mix. Super disappointing, would never order again, and didn’t drink most of it. I tried to fix it, but they don’t keep milk out– I had to ask for it. They also don’t keep syrup out, had to ask for that too. And the folks behind the counter were busy with other customers…
The space is cute but as others mentioned– spacially there’s not many places to sit and it’s not the most comfortable. For bike enthusiastics perhaps this place is a slam dunk, but for me I likely will not return.

Usually I’m a straight java guy, but after sipping my wife’s «C3» I am a convert. We liked the grind so much at G&G that we bought two bicycles! Look out Frederick, here we come! Today I went in for some minor adjustment on my «Joe Appaloosa» and while waiting I tried the «Johnny Cash», hot. One word — incredible! Seeing that we live just around the corner, I’m certain we will become regulars. James and Tracy, keep up the great work!

Stopped on a «coffee shop» google maps search result for a cup of joe before hitting the road back to PGH. What a cool spot — bikes, great coffee, and killer tunes on the record player. When I find myself in Frederick again, I’ll be sure to stop here for my morning pick-​me-​up!

Gravel & Grind was an interesting find on a day trip to Frederick. I had coffee on my mind and turned to Unilocal to point me in the right direction. I chose this location based off of the awesome Unilocal reviews and enticing photos.
The interior is quirky and an interesting combination of bicycles and coffee (somehow, it oddly meshes well!). While the menu is not extensive, I assumed that this business focused on quality versus quantity. Why make a bunch of half-​assed things when you can have a precise selection of high quality, hand crafted items. This is what Gravel & Grind seems to be about.
I had the Faux not Phở (lol), an interpretation of Vietnamese Iced Coffee. It was a nice balance of sweetened condensed milk and coffee. It was a hot day and this drink really hit the spot. Also got a bag of their beans to make at home, and it was also very good (can’t remember the flavor or name). Overall, I’ll be back if I’m in the area!

Finally came to check out this spot. Last time I was here it was a café called Mudd Puddle– around 10 years ago. Their house made toast is impressive and their dirty chai is sure dirty! I think the cost is bit high than others in the area but worth the quality. I won’t be coming back for the dirty chai but for other coffee specials and toasts!

This ain’t your run of the mill, commercial coffee place. If a coffee could have negative sugar in it, it would be served here. So if you’re into super strong, super black coffees, then this is the place to go. And each coffee is personally crafted, not just some «tear a pouch and dump it in the machine» mix. I’ve had two different coffees here (a Vietnamese coffee and some «french toast» coffee), and both were good.
So…why the four stars? Well, the seating sucks. There’s one or two two-​seater tables in the front, usually occupied by one person each, with all of their homework sprawled out on the tables, and then there’s a bar area with a few seats, also usually occupied by one person with their laptop and notes covering the area. And then there’s a table shoved in the back, next to a door and a low level shelf that I literally banged my head on, that seems sort of like an afterthought.
The main space is full of bicycles (as is their draw), and there’s a back room also full of merchandise for purchase. But the space of this place overall is severely misused. In a place that can probably fit like 10 – 15 people comfortably, as it stands you can probably fit like 4 people comfortably.
If we’re basing this on strong, potent coffee, then it’s perfectly fine. But if we factor in the atmosphere level of actually wanting to hang out here, it’s gotta be docked at least one star.

I’m a bit of a coffee snob and I had high expectations for the coffee/​bike shop since I love coffee and I love biking. Needless to say, the Gravel & Grind met all expectations. We tried a couple of coffee and coffee specials and for me the Johnny Cash and Gibraltar were the best out of the bunch. The chai latte was sweeter than I usually have them and my other friend who loves chai lattes would have agreed. The friendly baristas suggested that I try the waffles and I must say with the vermont syrup pairing along with spiced pears was great.
It received pluses since they played vinyl records and not some internet radio stuff that most cafes do now a days. Specifically, they were playing Spoon’s Gimme Fiction album, which is in my own top rotation. Who would have thought. .. it it coincidence, probably not.
Anyhow, it’s a bike shop as well and they carry some high end accessories like Brooks saddles and other great gear.
This is definitely one of the better coffee shops that I’ve visited in the country.

Hands down. Best coffee in Frederick. My husband is a huge fan of pour overs, so he was ecstatic to see them offered here. The espresso drinks are fantastic– you can actually taste it instead of the burnt-​flavored, brown milk so many other joints have tried to pass off as coffee. (Here’s looking at you, every Starbucks ever.) It’s smooth and creamy and you can’t help but feel ultimately satisfied with every sip. I still crave their artisan toast with cream cheese and lox. The atmosphere is unique, but not overwhelming. There’s something warm and pleasant about the small space. It’s a little off the trail from the main shops downtown, but well worth the detour.

Their artesian waffles are delicious! They’re available on the weekends only — at least for now.
Recently tried one of the iced coffees; I’m not typically a fan of those but Gravel & Grind prepared it perfectly and it wasn’t too sweet. Everything is really fresh here and you’ll always receive friendly service. The Johnny Cash iced coffee is TO DIE FOR. This is quite possibly the best coffee beverage I’ve ever had in my life. A must try.
Note: They’re closed Mons/​Tues. Off-​street parking (bring quarters, just in case) but free after 5pm weekdays.

In a word: unique. I never considered the combination of coffee and bicycles. Apart theyre so familiar, yet together theyre so unexplored. I love the rustic feel I get… the semi worn slats of wood, the gravel the bikes sit atop. Its sorta like an old tool shed turned coffee shop… and who of us hasnt parked a bike in the confines of a shed? Its a perfect atmosphere.
I am a coffee enthusiast, for awhile I have been bogged down with chain coffee… Dunkin, Starbucks… does such a mom and pop shop committed to brewing a quality bean the right way exist? Can I get bliss to-​go??? YES!!! At last.
Just a quaint shop with an interesting concept and friendly faces. I am diggin’ it.

I love everything about this place, the ambiance, the location, the food and the coffee.
Right off of Carroll st it’s a bit hidden as the entrance is on the side but you can’t miss the bikes standing outside. On your way in there’s a little seating area (one seat is in a bath tub!) and bikes parked outside which I’m guessing are for sale.
One you walk it its very inviting with bikes and records everywhere. There are lots of coffee options from pour over, to espresso, to lattes and iced coffees and teas. The food menu is way in the back so it’s harder to read and it’s pretty limited but it’s all about the coffee. The food menu has different toasts using local bread and waffles on weekends.
The waffles are so so good, topped with what tastes like homemade whipped cream and berries and the tomato mozzarella toast is amazing as well… the bread is just wow.
There’s some seating inside and a nice small terrace outside as well and you can browse different bikes/​accessories while you wait for you order.

You know that friend’s house you loved going to as a kid? The one that felt warm and cozy on a rainy or cold day, or happy and comfortable on sunny ones? That’s this place. And to top it off, their coffee is off the charts.
I worked at Starbucks for five years, starting when I was 14, and have been a patron of every coffee shop I can find since then. I’ve never had such good espresso, seriously. It wasn’t bitter, it was perfectly brewed. I couldn’t even stop drinking it long enough to Instagram it. (A huge deal, I know.)
To top it off, the owner Tracy is a totally rad, super nice person. (Which is great, because we all give enough jerks money, right?) The two girls working with her this morning were also really nice, and engaged in my chatter. All around great experience. I love when people are not only cool but they are great at what they do.

This place is a hybrid coffee shop and bike shop. Very cool. Also the décor reflects both. Bikecentric items, gearhead items, tea items, coffee items etc. Also local artists and such… Fun items such as jewelry made out of bike parts…
Had an iced chai latte. They can do custom items not on the menu — just ask. Very tasty! Completely pleased…
My friend got his bike worked on. The owner was very nice and is very knowledgeable.
Only downside is that you’ll have to find street parking to come here… But it doesn’t seem like too much of a problem in this area.

Really cool people making really good coffee. Espresso was so good, I was impacted upon. Best iced latte I’ve ever had, I could actually taste the espresso. Great interior with sweet bike stuff that I’m probably never going to buy, but I like being surrounded by it. I would come here again, and already have.

I was excited to hear about another coffee place in town. When I looked it up on FB, I thought it might be so hipster that I’d feel weird in there. But it’s not like that at all.
G&G has a comfortable feel and look to it. It has a unique personality but is welcoming to everyone. It is SO AWESOME to have good pour over coffee here in Frederick. I am thrilled!
Prices are what you’d expect and parking is easy in that area. A great place to check out.

A great new coffee shop that also restores bikes and does bike servicing. Their pour-​over coffee is really good!
One downside. I went to get coffee there at 8:50am on a Tuesday and they were closed. They were open later though. Just starting out, I guess they are still ramping up.
