Cowan Benefit Services Inc. was established in 1991 to provide employee benefits brokerage and consulting services to employers. Headquartered in Franklin, Tenn., Cowan is the 14^th largest U.S. employee benefits broker, according to a 2013 survey by Business Insurance.

Cowan has grown its services from brokerage and consulting to include fully outsourced benefits administration in 1994, voluntary benefits in 2000, online enrollment and communication services in 2002, human resources consulting in 2003, and wellness consulting in 2006.

Matt Cowan has 32 years of experience in employee benefits brokerage and consulting, 22 of those years spent leading Cowan to its place as a premier consulting firm. He was formerly vice president with Johnson & Higgins of Tennessee.
