Larimer Humane Society

Couldn’t be happier. They were super friendly, helpful in answering questions and gave us our little joy, Poppy. Told us she was in foster care, and that’s all they knew about her. I believe them.
She did have an eye condition, as many kittens do, and the meds cleared it up in a two days.
If I still lived in the state, I’d adopt all my pets from here, they are really caring folks.
Animals here looked at happy as they could be, living in cages. Always makes me sad to see hopeless pets, but I know they will make the best for them.
I was there on a Saturday afternoon, the place was clean and well staffed. Was getting crowded as we left.
I also like their website, it’s updated often and easy to see photos and descriptions, and other info.

We have had so many bad experiences with this organization I don’t know where to start. There was a vicious dog that came after my 5 year old son and infant in a stroller while out on a walk, completely unprovoked. My mama bear instincts kept the dog at bay while we slowly backed away from the crazy dog and we were not bitten. This is a dog that went berserk and lunged at the fence anytime someone walked by, unfortunately it got out. The owner was not home and I called the police who redirected me to humane society. The man I spoke to kept asking me what I had done to aggravate the dog. He was less concerned with the fact the dog was notably viscous and crazy and more concerned about what my infant and 5 year had done to cause the dog to attack us. He thought if they had time they might come by and check it out, I told him if someone gets hurt today it will be your organizations fault and I will make it my mission to let everyone know.
Another time there was a sick raccoon in a busy alley, I was referred back to the human society who said that since Loveland wasn’t supportive of their mission they couldn’t send anyone out– somehow politics between them and the city superseded their job.
Another time an agent threatened to arrest us because we were trying to save wood duck ducklings and their mama from neighborhood cars and cats. This agency is poorly organized with terrible communications, and random policy that appears to based on whichever disgruntled employee happens to be working. I applaud the cause, however the organization itself has horrible communication, outreach and community service.

Update: I added 2 stars because I dealt with other staff while adopting a rescued Parrot and they were very helpful. I think the guy below is an exception but, really, they should train their people better. He ruins it for everyone.
I never give one star reviews. But, I own a home (second home) in CO and had to call them because I found a sick little muskrat (?) in my bathroom. It wasn’t injured from my cat as it had no blood on it but even if it had been it was awful what the «officer» told me: «You need to chain up your cats to the fence when they are outside».
First of all that is inhumane. it is dangerous to chain a cat to a fence. They cannot defend themselves like dogs. Secondly it’s the nature of animals to stalk each other. Just as this officer probably eats meat and had on what looked like leather boots.
I am from NY but he also decided to make a derogatory comment about Florida thinking I was from there. (My friends’ car was in my driveway). Telling me, «This isn’t FL we do things differently in CO» with a creepy, serial killer-​ish grin/​snarl.
Dude I am not even from Florida. Yes, I lived there for a while. Who hasn’t? But calm down. What is so bad about FL anyway? This coming from a guy who looked like Dudley Do-​Right.

I called the Humane Society for advice on a baby bird I found in my yard. The woman I spoke to said to leave it, it was probably learning to fly and the mother would take care of it. So this morning I got to pick up and throw away a dead baby bird.
I have never had what I would call a good experience with the Humane Society.
One or two with their drivers weren’t terrible, but overall I would avoid this place. It does not seem they have the best interests of any animals at heart.

What I worry about this shelter the most is the fact that they don’t check into people who are adopting these animals. They just take their money and they can have any animal they want. I saw a couple college kids there who wanted to adopt a pit. They got their pit and were trying to look cool with the dog once they got it to the car, by putting a spike collar on her and a chain leash. They need to restrict adoptions to college kids as once they graduate they, 90% of the time, get rid of their animals and they end up back in the shelter. Or even worse totally neglected because these kids are in school all day.

I am writing this review to complain about Larimer County’s methods on how they get dog owners to get their dogs licensed. What they do is they go through veterinarian’s files (or vice versa) and see what new puppies that are not licensed. While this may sound all well and good for people to get their dogs licensed I accuse the Larimer County Animal Control of using fascist methods to achieve their goals.
Now I am not against dog licenses at all. I just don’t like getting nasty notices that you COULD be taken to court if you don’t comply with us and ya da ya da. I have learned to control and protect my animals and keep them up on their shots and yes GET them licensed. I don’t appreciate receiving oppressive notices in the mail saying that I am in trouble for owning a dog. My dog has a license in Larimer County already –Thank You very much!
I have lived in Jefferson and Denver counties and have not encountered such Nazi theatrics. The dogs that I had when I lived in these counties also were kept up on their shots and licensed and were minimal in being a threat to anyone. No notices for that either.
My grandmother had the same trouble with LC Animal Protection and Control when she was alive and had dogs. Just another reason to move to another county or state I guess.

The Larimer Humane Society is AWESOME! Now please note — their building, unfortunately their building is not awesome which is sad. LHS really deserves a better space — everyone should donate money to LHS — they need a new, bigger, beautiful place to call home. My first experience with LHS was when we were looking to add another member to our family. One problem though, our dog Daphne is really particular, she wasn’t going to let us just take in any old dog, heck no she was the decision maker here! I really wanted to adopt an adult dog because you know everyone wants a puppy. We went to LHS at least three times and introduced Daphne to a wide array of wonderful adult dogs but she made it clear none of them would be her new sibling! LHS was so patient throughout this entire process! One time we were there is was really cold out they let us introduce the dogs inside, very nice (and warm)! LHS had us fill out a Meet Your Match questionnaire, this is cool because it helped us figure out what dog energy level & dog personality type was the best fit for our family. Well, since Daphne decided she didn’t want to adopt an adult dog we agreed to see how she would get on with a puppy. There was an adorable little pit bull at LHS named Sara, she had been there for almost two weeks! This was unusual for puppies, I know, I had been obsessively watching the LHS website for over a month now! So, we introduced Daphne and the puppy and… YES! We found our match!!! Turns out it was too late to adopt Sara that evening due to all the paperwork etc. so LHS let us pay a small fee to hold her until the next day. We went back the next day to official adopt our little furry bundle of joy! Oh happy day! We renamed 2 month old Sara, Alice. Alice is now a year and three months and has many other names like Sugar Pumpkin and Black Dog. She is still so cute we can’t even stand it!
I will tell you right now that the Larimer Humane Society is too small and too busy. Adopting Alice made me realize this. That is why I decided to volunteer with LHS. As a volunteer, I feel they do an amazing job! I first went to an information session then I picked departments to interview with and finally I went through a very thorough training. As a volunteer LHS makes me feel very appreciated.
The Larimer Humane Society is providing a very important service to our community and I beg all of you to please, please, please adopt an animal from your local humane society, do not go to a pet whore I mean pet store. LHS has a huge wildlife rehab section too — so cool. The folks at LHS are making the best of the space they have but it is not the space that makes Larimer Humane Society 5 stars it is the staff and the work they do for all of us. They couldn’t be more friendly and helpful and they truly genuinely live their mission statement — «To Promote and Provide the Responsible Care and Treatment of Animals.»
I think Gandhi said it best — «The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.»
