a great pharmacy/general store, although I must admit I laugh hysterically whenever I pass it because of the name! ohhhhh myyyyy! since allergy season is in effect(as evidenced by my car now being covered in a bright green hue), I picked up some allergy medicine. it was cheap — hell, I paid less for a bottle of 100 capsules of Preferred Plus than I would for the«generic» ones at the big name stores! the back half is a pharmacy, and the front half of the store is more convenience/general store with food, cards, candy, soda, office supplies, and such. it’s actually a fairly big store. they even print their own weekly flyers and have free delivery! since Austin Drugs is closed on Saturdays, it’s good to know there’s an alternative. it’s clean, has friendly people working there, and good prices. this is the type of pharmacy that you rarely see anymore due to the cookiecutter reformatting of New York City. it’s been open since 1974, and hopefully for many more years.

So I was told by the pharmacy whose initials are that of one half the island of Hispaniola that they couldn’t fill my prescription. What? Isn’t their motto now Your City, Your Drugstore? I was told to seek out a ‘compounding’ pharmacy and they couldn’t offer any clue as to where to start searching. I know about compound interest but pharmacy? Fortunately I recalled walking past a place very close to where I live that has the name ‘drugs’ in its title. BJS Drugs! Stepping into this business was a breath of fresh air(Literally, as I’ve been apartment bound for much of the week). Friendly people. Genuine concern. Why haven’t I gone here before? Pharmacist Gottlieb was able to hook me up with my special blend in no time. He had all the ingredients in stock for compounding, accepted my insurance and was just a nice guy to deal with. When I exited the shop, the person at the front of the store said good bye to me. For once I was not a number but a person! A quick look up and down the aisles revealed standard kit you’d expect to see in a drug store along with some kitchen supplies, snacks, etc. I didn’t examine the prices. I hope that my need for pharmacists in the future is minimal but BJS Drugs is definitely a place I’d return to.
