So you are driving down a dark road to the Everglades and fried food from the typical fast food restaurants is not what you want. The kids are hungry and you pass what looks like a backyard family gathering. You swear that there’s a sign for a restaurant but your wife thinks that you are delusional. You pull on to the side of the road and go through a hurricane fence. The menu is hanging and the patrons are all Hispanic and look to be workers from the local farms there with their families. So far this seems exciting and a little odd but the smells from the kitchen trailer demand you stay. We ordered a ton of food, as in we could never eat it all. We sat under the shelter of a roof at picnic tables and gorged ourselves on the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. We kept going up to try just one more thing, helped by the overly generous and hospitable owner. Every bite was awesome! At the end of the food extravaganza that left us all satisfied and full but fearful of the bill, I was shocked to see the amount was under $ 30! I went to the owner to confirm that all we ordered was accounted for and it was. Just to be clear I would go to the Everglades again just to eat here.

Yay! I am the first to share this good news with you, Unilocaliverse. This place is delicious! There are many taco stands at the flea market, but I was lucky enough to randomly choose this one. We took a pilgrimage to Homestead in search of the real deal Mexican food, and we were not disappointed. As a table we ordered: Mexican Coca Cola: in the bottle, made with the cane sugar, not HFC, mmmm Agua De Jamaica: this a red juice made with dried hibiscus flowers and sugar and probably some other things and I love it! Very refreshing Horchata: very good, a lot of cinnamon though, not 100% true to Mexican style, but wonderful nonetheless Tacos Al Pastor. Wow! These were excellent. Home made tortilla, the meat being cooked on a shwarma type rotisserie. Bits of pineapple and onion cooked with it. The meat was crisp and tender and so flavorful. Enchiladas Verdes: excellent as well. Really nice salsa verde, not shy with cheese Enchiladas Potosinas: this was the first time I had this dish. Not sure if it is typical of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, or of the restaurant. The are served like a taco or tostada. They have meat, cooked carrots and potato, lettuce, cheese. They were the weakest link of the table, but still yummy. They were just a little blander than the other options. This is a very casual place, after all, we are still at a flea market folks. The server was actually extremely attentive and went out of her way for us. I am not sure if there is much or any English spoken here, but they have signs with pictures and numbers, so you can work around that detail if that is the case. I am very regretful I didn’t grab some food for the road, I am craving it already. I would like to go back to try the other tacos varieties and some of the soups that they had. We escaped at about 10 dollars a piece, all of us ordering refills on drinks. This place really pleased and I want to try all the other stands around it to benchmark. You do sit at a picnic table and have table service, with fans and table clothes. There are a selection of house-made salsas and my favoriteeee Mexican hot sauce: Valentina. Also there are diced onions and cilantro to top off everything. Ahhhh I want to go back. Worth an hour drive in my opinion.
