Specialties
Award winning coffee/espresso drinks, tea, bubble tea, sandwiches, pastries and desserts.
If you’re looking for a coffee or espresso drink done right, you’ve found your place!
We specialize in coffee, tea and espresso based drinks, and we are also the only place in mid-Michigan that serves bubble tea. For food, we have narrowed our menu down to a dozen or so sandwiches, wraps, salads and soups that taste great for a low cost.
We also have fresh bagels, pastries and desserts daily.
Finally, our back room is the perfect venue for concerts, art exhibits, meetings or events. We can hold as many as 75 depending on the set up.
History
Established in 2013.
The story of Café Rhema is a pretty awesome journey. Our space downtown Flint, MI was the first historic building to be renovated at the beginning of Flints revival in 2005. At that time, a local entrepreneur opened Brown Sugar Café which brought coffee to the main stretch on Saginaw Street for the first time. After eight great years, another young entrepreneur who had become active in the downtown area saw the space and made an offer to purchase it. Our owner, Joshua Spencer, had a vision for a coffee shop that would stand out among shops not just in the Flint area, but cafes worldwide. After the transfer of ownership in June of 2013, Josh began a journey across the country where he visited the best coffee shops in six states, and even a few over seas. The reason? Research. After hundreds of pictures and dozens of interviews with other coffee shop and café owners, Josh began to layout a plan for a new café with a flair.
Café Rhema is a 1920’s themed shop with beautiful décor.
Meet the Business Owner
Joshua S.
Business Owner
Josh Spencer has always had an entrepreneur spirit, which became evident when he started his first landscaping business at the age of 16. After graduating from high school, Josh went on to the University of Michigan-Flint, completing the theater with a performance emphasis program.
Since then, he’s started and grown The Spencer Agency, a full-service advertising agency for which he’s won countless American Advertising Awards, and owned and managed numerous businesses in the retail and food service industry, including downtown Flint’s Café Rhema, which opened in 2013. Known for his unique ideas and creative mind, he’s successfully completed numerous PR and advertising events and unconventional campaigns (a sod covered street with circus performers? Well, why not?).
Josh founded the non-profit group Ichthus Flint in 2001 and still serves as president, providing clean entertainment and a networking environment for young professionals in Flint, Michigan and surrounding areas.
