Sun King Brewing Tap Room & Small-Batch Brewery

The Sun King Tap Room in Fishers is finally up and running at full steam and is brewing terrific, small batches of deliciousness. While you still can get the core line-​up of Wee Mac, Osiris, and Sunlight Cream Ale it is the small batch brews that make this place so special. On my last visit I had a Grapefruit Jangle which is a take on the wildly popular (and my personal favorite) IPA Grapefruit Jungle. The addition of grapefruit zest made a great beer even better. They also had Bitter Druid ESB on the small batch tap as well. If you haven’t been there, do yourself a favor and go. I can’t wait for my next pint in this great space.

Big open space with long indoor picnic tables. A family friendly place where parents can have a beer while everyone plays different card and board games. The staff is nice and you can also order from the neighboring restaurants and they will deliver. We had pizza, which was the perfect companion to the flight of beers.
Easy parking, handicap accessible, and warm, comfortable feeling.

What a GREAT addition to the not super inspiring 96^th street. I travel this route often and love the busy and festive atmosphere this tap room has brought to a so-​so strip center.
The room is warm with plenty of wood tables and tv screens if you want to stay and watch the game. They don’t serve food but you can order delivery from a number of neighborhood eateries and have them deliver to Sun King.
The beer is, as expected, fab. My personal favorite thing about the tap room is Friday growler fills for $ 6!!! Such a great deal, and everyone must agree because there is often a huge crowd on Friday afternoons.

Great beer and I really enjoy the growler refill specials on Friday. The mini growler «bullet» is great for the Wee Muckle as its contents hold 2 pints… Until I finished it in one sitting (doh). That 8.5% alcohol content was sure tasty. Then I went into the regular growler and kept on going with the Wee Mac.

Great place to knock back a few and relax. Great selection of brews. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Love have some place so close to home. It’s always pretty busy. Which makes me happy. A must try.

Opening another location and putting it in Fishers was a great idea. I love that you can enjoy great craft beer AND have food delivered from any number of the businesses near by. We LOVE Sunking beer and will be visiting this location weekly for the growler fill ups!

A group of coworkers met to try the new location in Fishers. I was there first and it was pretty packed at 2:30 pm. The seating is limited to large tables of about 10 – 12, most of which were already occupied, so I was unable to reserve group seating. I hovered by a couple of friends and asked if I could have their table when they left and set out coasters to ‘reserve’ seats while I stood in line.
Their ‘system’ was somewhat confusing, with several people across a bar serving and no defined line. Initially, I planned on ordering several growlers of each flavor for all to try, but was quickly told that they were for take out only and that only pints were sold on tap. I provided my credit card and explained that a group would be joining me on my tab and ordered a pint for myself.
I soon learned that there were several menus floating around the tables and that you could call in a food order at Tijuana Flats or Sahm’s, both located in the same strip mall, for delivery. I ordered for our group and had a combo of quesadillas, chips, dips and churros on the table before many joined me.
Our table was in the corner next to a small bar, where I was able to pull stools over for others to join us as the crowd grew. They could use some acoustic treatment as the noise level was pretty loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation across the table.
One of my guests is Gluten intolerant, and after asking someone at the next table what they were drinking, learned that they also have a variety of wine and champagne.
Overall, we all enjoyed ourselves and this new location, despite the seating challenges. I settled our bill and was surprised that they don’t have an area to leave a tip, which we certainly wanted to do. I was told that we could make a donation to a charity, but only had my card on me.

Obviously if you enjoy Sunking or craft beers you will love this place. It’s great to just stop by fill up your growler, sit down have a beer and chill. It’s still in the works of becoming even better so that’s the reason for the 4 stars. It would be better if they made more craft beers than their originals and 3 «specials». I see this place getting really cool really fast. Much better than downtown location as far as being able to sit and enjoy.

A great tap room! Friendly service and plenty of space. They have a lot of individual taps to minimize wait times for growler fills. If beer isn’t your thing, they also serve local wines. The space is airy and has that warehouse feel. Kids are welcome, which makes it easy for mom and dad to get their Sun King fix. While «food» is served there, unless you want a $ 10 freezer burned Hot Pocket, opt for carry out from neighbors Sahm’s or Tijuana Flats (they might even deliver).
Because of their small size, we were told they will be able to brew more experimental flavors. Perhaps my favorite Taffy Wheat will make a comeback?

Fabulous edition to the NE side. I am such a late comer to the brewery scene but thanks to Unilocal (and some select Unilocal friends) I have really learned to appreciate how active craft beer is here in Indianapolis.
To have a location where you can kick back after work, get some growlers filled for the weekend, and (most importantly) ON THE NE SIDE and not have to go far is kick ASS. Order some Tijuana Flats next door? Sure… why not. Have them deliver it too. Someone brought some Wendy’s tonight… whatever you want. It’s all good.
Bartenders very polite and professional and work hard in keeping the lines moving. Bit loud inside but who cares… speak up!
Great spot for some socializing and pints on a Friday after work (or any other day). Can’t wait until fall and they are pouring Sundays.

Disclaimer: I walked into the new Sun King Tap Room with my expectations set as high as they could be, which I consider fair given that this is Sun King we are talking about. That said, I’m going to round up to 4 stars from the 3.5 I want to give.
Overall, the place is OK. It’s a tap room with very few specialties. After the recent modifications to downtown Sun King, it definitely has a similar vibe.
Let’s call it a pessimistic day and start with the cons first:
CONS:
— You walk in to a merchandise counter right by the door, which is where I was carded. If this is normal, it causes a massive queue to form out the front door at popular times, like when I arrived.
— They don’t serve food, but the tap room is NOT dog friendly
— All pints are $ 5 and they control the amount you get. I hate that. I understand that some really heavy beers are served in 9oz or 13oz portions to match the appropriate glass. However, Sun King sells an IPA glass (see photo) which appears to hold quite a lot of beer, but they served me a 12oz pour of Grapefruit Jungle in a tiny glass filled to the brim. Something about that just doesn’t feel right. Charge me $ 7 and serve me a full pour in the right glass that you made for the beer.
— As of July 7, 2015 (I know its been less than a week since they opened, I said I was being pessimistic and had very high expectations) they are not brewing at this location. That translates to no growlers on Sunday
— They have a large champagne room which I think is used for events (I’m assuming this since I was there for an event and we used that area as a private area). The room is roughly equal in size to the communal seating area. Save the event space for the «destination brewery» in Fishers and give us some more tables for crowded times. Opening up the entire area would also likely cut down on some of the noise.
PROS:
— They have a dual liquor license, which means they can serve beer from other breweries (like FFF) and wine. They do have wine in the tap room, but they didn’t have any non-​SK beer on tap when I was there
— They have a lot of taps for a few beers to help expedite filling growlers
— They are going to brew beer in 7.5 barrel batches to try experimental recipes. If its good, they’ll sell it and maybe go large scale production. If its gross, they’ll dump it out. They weren’t willing to do that on the large scale downtown
This is a Pro, but I’m breaking it out because its something I didn’t know about Sun King but it definitely contributes to what makes them an amazing brewery and what makes their beer better than most other local options. Everyone that works at Sun King is required to participate in a monthly blind tasting for quality control. Basically, they are given 4 samples of the same beer: the one that is currently on tap, the next batch of that beer that is ready for tapping, a warm variety of that beer*, and a version that purposefully has something wrong with it (like an extra ingredient). The ideal is for the tasters be able to perfectly distinguish between all of them. If a majority of the testers indicate that something is wrong with the beer that’s scheduled to be tapped next, the ENTIRE 30 barrel batch is dumped. That’s serious QC.
*You’ve probably noticed that SK beer is always cold, even at the liquor store. That’s by design because of their limited processing of the beer, it doesn’t keep when not refrigerated.
I look forward to my next visit. I just wasn’t as awe struck as I was hoping for on my first visit.

If they served food, I would give it five stars. The new Sun King Brewery in Fishers is a very nice place! I would call the décor industrial chic. The main room is open and airy, but can be very noisy when there are lots of people in there. As an added bonus, kids are allowed! They just cannot step behind the metal partintion for the bar. They also have carryout beer and merchandise for sale.
You are allowed to carry in food, and places will deliver to there (I believe they said Tijuana Flats will bring the food down for you). There are lots of places to eat around there, and even a McDonald’s so you can pick something up for the kiddies before you go have some brews.
Addtional note: the Champagne Room is available for events, and seats up to 60 people.
All of the décor in the Champagne Room is made by someone who works for them! Even the light fixtures.

First Sun King Tap Room experience! So #blessed. Loved this place and it’s unique quirks. Tables made out of old bowling alleys, restaurants next door who deliver (Tijuana Flats & Sahm’s), and huge windows straight into the (soon to be!) brewing area.
I’ve always loved the Sunlight Cream Ale and decided to switch it up and try something new. I really appreciated the friendliness of the Sun King employees as they really helped me find another brew that I would enjoy. I ended up getting the Osiris (a classic I know, can’t believe I hadn’t tried it) and of course, I hard-​core enjoyed it.
The atmosphere was social and inviting. The high bar tables facing different directions make for a great community feel and promote movement. These aspects make it a great place to meet friends, especially with the long tables that fit multiple groups of people. Bring everyone you know and let’s get this party started!

We all tried the sample pack — 6 samples for $ 6. I liked the seasonally beers the best. The place was loud but the beers were good. Unilocal was hosting an event.

This is a great addition to the north east side. I had felt that sun king had become a little stagnant on there brewing well this place will change it all. With the capability of doing small batches, they plan to do much more in the line of extermination. The place looks as a brewery should, low key and all about the beer. There is only one down side to this place and it is the noise. It will never bother me but someone will complain in the future. It is a must try and it is kid friendly like Books & Brews right down the street.

You’ve officially made the Fishers area so much cooler. And I say that with whole hearted honestly. haha I knew that I just HAD to attend the grand opening and luckily I was able to attend with a couple of fellow beer lovers. We were very impressed and by golly, you guys literally had a line of people outside. Probably the most excitement the north side has seen in years! And to be quite honest, I’ve truly started to love the north side and I see this location as being a huge hit.
So let’s talk about opening night. I was introduced to GFJ and it was a-​mazing. Like I’ll probably be buying more soon. I was also able to meet the famous Clay, which was like meeting a local celebrity. haha I’ve been a Sun King fan ever since I moved to Indy, so hey — that was a big deal!
As for location, you’ll find this gem on 96^th St. right by Sahm’s and AT&T. And right across the street is the brand spanking new Project Pie. (Which is also delightful.) I absolutely love that these wonderful things are coming up north. And you bet I’ll be a frequent visitor to this SK hot spot.

This place has a great selection of unique beers in addition to the staples. You can get carryout from sahms or tijuana flats delivered. If they can continue to provide unique beers and not just the staples, this place will thrive

Big things are happening in Fishers — we officially have a Sun King Tap Room! As one of the states largest micro-​brewers I’m pretty excited to see them expand to the North side. I was definitely grinning from ear to ear at their grand opening. The new space is located off of 96^th Street/​I-​69 in a strip mall behind McDonalds, near Sahm’s and Tijuana Flats. This is nice and convenient, because the tap room does not have a kitchen. You can however order food from these various businesses and presto they deliver. Menus can be found at the taproom. You may also find co-​owner Clay Robinson pouring pints, clearing tables and chatting it up with guests. So if you see him be sure to say hello — cool guy!
The space is larger then I expected. Great for groups. Families can bring kids to this location. I love the wooden lighting & large barn door that looks like it could partition off a room for private parties. Lots of long wooden communal tables for seating as well as bar seating, high tops, and standard tables for groups in the side room. Lots of natural light beaming through those windows.
This is Sun Kings small batch facility so you will find experimental styles as well as the fab 3 (as I call it) — Sunlight Cream Ale, Osiris Pale Ale, Wee Mac Scottish Style Ale. I’m really looking forward to trying out any and all special developmental releases! Looks like they can accommodate 12 tap selections of rotating beer offerings. Just like their downtown location you can get beer here by the pint (10oz-​16oz pours $ 5), growler, and cans. Don’t miss growler fill Fridays $ 6 which includes all house beers (the fab 3). They also have a nice selection of merch (tees, pint glasses, koozies, etc.).
Yes please! Grapefruit Jungle, Afternoon Delight, Batch 666, Bitchin Camaro, TinyTanic (tastes like cream soda with a kick). Cheers to fresh local beer!

Great extension of the downtown Indianapolis brewery. Fantastic beers and great, friendly atmosphere. While you are here definitely sample a couple beers. Try the sunlight, Osiris, or wee mac if you are new to craft beer. Otherwise, try something new! This location will have special brews not available at the downtown location. You can get samples and the staff is great if you have any questions! You can order food from Sahms and Tijuana flats and they will bring it to you.
