Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

The food wasn’t bad. I tried to call an order in but was put on hold. The nimrod who took the call then just laid the phone on the counter so My family and I could listen over Bluetooth to the 5 back to back other orders they took before even acknowledging me. We arrived 7 minutes later and so I just hung up and walked in to the store instead. The place was out of 3 things I wanted so the options were limited. They said they were busy. But to run out of food with 3 hours to go is pretty substandard. The staff I interacted but for the nimrod who answered the phone were apologetic and friendly. Overall you get a sense that the place is lacking leadership, disengaged employees not working as a team and an open kitchen which was disorganized and messy. Again the smoked ribs were actually good. Well seasoned and intensely smoky. The two sides and rolls however tasted like a business decision first and like really good food second. Overall mediocre experience. I may try the other smoked meats a la carte in the future but I won’t be upset if I never made it back here before I died.

Dickies Bar-​B-​Q is delicious. The Ferndale location is really nice and casual. The chef and assistant that served us on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 4:30pm. We’re fantastic, nice and friendly. I really enjoyed dining there with my husband and 2 friends.

As far as BBQ goes, this place is by no means great BBQ, but it is good. No complaints really just average food. I would stop here again if I was in the area and in the mood for it.

The food is amazing. Been there 2x not disappointed. Have to say though, the staff is kind of unprofessional. I get it, they’re kids but someone should supervise them or at least give some basic training on making a good impression on the customer. The shouting & carrying on is kind of weird. It makes you wonder if they should be handling food.

Smoked BBQ fast food style. The meats are tasty super smokey and the sides are good as well. It is a fast food place so do not get too excited. They give you free ice cream when you eat in the place. The prices are a bit high for what you get though, the meat portions are small.

I would not necessarily consider this BBQ. More like BBQ — inspired fast food. The meats were gummy, the sides resembled something out of a cafeteria. Edible, but unimpressive. I will not be returning.

In my experience with BBQ, a really good meal can be an *experience* that causes you to pause and ponder the wonders of life. I had previously avoided Dickey’s because I never expected that such an experience could come from a chain restaurant. Well… I was right.
I happened to really want a BBQ fix today, and I was in the area, so I finally broke down and stopped in. My first impression wasn’t great because as I parked I noticed that Jimmy John’s and Pizza Hut were both packed — this was dinner time on a Monday — where as Dickey’s had one customer inside. As I approached the back door I noticed a large pile of trash at the door next door. At that point a Dickey’s employee exited that door and I realized it was the employee entrance leading into the kitchen, and the pile of trash was all from food prep products.
Entering the restaurant, it did smell pretty good. At least it smelled like barbecue. The menu was fairly diverse — lots of different meats and sides. I ordered the Monday special, a «Big Barbecue» pulled pork sandwich with two sides and a drink, at $ 9.99. For two sides I picked mac and cheese and jalapeño beans. At the register I paid, collected my food, and went to fill my drink. The cup itself was a big yellow plastic deal, and I noticed a sign advertising that if you bring your Big Yellow Cup back you get a 99 cent refill.
Headed home and unpacked my meal… First off, the Big Barbecue sandwich was smaller than most pulled porks I’ve had. Second, it didn’t come sauced — the BBQ sauce was in a little plastic cup on the side. I decided to try the unsauced sandwich. Nothing special here — it’s pork, it’s pulled, but no exceptional flavor and it was a little dry. I proceeded to add the sauce and try again. The sauce was on the sweet side, but again the flavor isn’t exceptional, and there was such a small amount in the one little cup.
I turned to the sides. Jalapeño beans were more sauce than bean. There was a little bit of heat, but absolutely *no* flavor to them. I went back to the sandwich and tried the beans twice more, hoping for anything at all, but no — completely bland, flavorless, with a little kick of spicy. Next the mac and cheese — reminded me of middle school cafeteria mac, enough said.
Final verdict, if I’m completely desperate for a quick barbecue bite I *might* consider another visit. Chances are much more likely I’ll be motivated to drive the extra few miles it takes to find a real barbecue joint. On the plus side, I got a great, high-​quality yellow plastic cup out of my visit.

Someone reviewed this place and used the phrase «bbq inspired fast food» and that nails it. Placed my order online but had to wait while the pre-​packaged bag of Mac and cheese finished boiling. All the sides I saw were from a bag, so I wasn’t even upset that they forgot two of them. Go to Zeiks, its at least real food.

Heard a lot about this BBQ via the media, then after reading the reviews I had to stop and try this chain style restaurant. First; for a chain BBQ spot… they are above any other currently in the southeastern region. Ribs — 8, Pulled Pork — 9 and Brisket — 9. The sides are above average, again if you’re looking for somewhere to satisfy your BBQ craving, this is the place. My overall experience was a 8 out of 10. I qill be visiting them again.

The big BBQ sandwich is stupendous. Add some beans, Mac and Cheese, and their signature doll based potato salad and you are golden. I’ll let you in on a little secret– next time you are debating which sauce to choose, ALL three is the way to go.

Tried them 5 times… and here is my experience…
The staff is SUPER FRIENDLY… to say that almost seems like I work there but I do not, the three guys behind the counter each time seemed more friendly than Mr Rogers. I do have to say that twice when I went in there was a employee (sorry don’t know her name) that was sitting at a table playing on cell that said «Hey» as I entered. Those guys are hard working, she needs to learn what a job with the public means. Friendly Customer Service.

If you sign up for their email they will send you an email for a free pop. The food is overpriced for what you get, I am comparing to Slow’s and Lockhart’s and Famous Dave’s and Billy Simms. Since they are chainlike and not off my own grill :) They have 3 sauces… sweet, regular, spicy… all are great !!! the food though is not cooked with sauce and you have to add after cooking: (the side are very small and do not fill the container.
Sadly «Two thunbs down» I was waiting and hoping more from this bbq place in Ferndale. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

Ferndale is rarely kind to chain restaurants, so to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. I’m glad to report that I was wrong. The staff is super friendly, the location is great, and the price is right (kids eat free on Sunday, and with our buy one get one free coupon, we had dinner for about $ 18!). The food is pretty good — is it Slows? No. But it’s tasty, and a step up from fast food.
My only complaint: Dickey’s runs out of food quickly. I’ve eaten there three times, each time they had run out of one of their main entrees. The last time I ate there, they were out of brisket, cheddar sausage, and chicken — which seems a little ridiculous. Thankfully I like pulled pork the most.
Overall, it’s a decent, reasonably priced place for food. I’ll be back for more.

Place is horrible. If you want BBQ inspired fast food, sure, give it a go. If you want BBQ served fast, skip this joint and go somewhere else. The food has about as much quality and pride as McDonalds, BK, or Wendy’s, but the aforementioned places won’t make you feel as bad after pounding one of their combo meals. I ate here today for the first time and I won’t be going back. Horrible, and I feel like crap now.
Mac and cheese, nothing special, tastes like boxed mac and cheese.
Beans, gross, no flavor, no meat.
Pulled pork, virtually no smoke flavor at all.
Sauce was decent.
Roll was actually good.

I wanted to try out Dickey’s since there’s one near me in Troy, so this worked out perfectly. I had the two-​meat plate (chicken and pulled pork) with the onion tanglers and waffle fries as my sides. It’s normally like $ 11.50 which is a fair price, plus they do specials during the week on specific 2– or 3-​meat plates.
The chicken was good, the pulled pork was a little fatty. I liked the «sweet» BBQ sauce best, the «regular» one was good too.
The onion tanglers were FANTASTIC, waffle fries were good.
We got a pecan pie slice too which I took to go and ate the next day, it was also very good. Dickey’s always has FREE ICE CREAM (yes, I repeat, FREE), which is dairy-​free froyo and also tasted good — dairy-​free doesn’t always taste good to me.
Convenient location too, right on Woodward, and parking in the back (also free!). I will be back here or to the Troy location sometime soon for some good BBQ :).

I’m loving this place as a quick service meal that satisfies and isn’t too expensive. I get 3 meats and 2 sides for $ 13.25 with bread and pickles and onions. The spicy cheddar sausage is my new jam.
The inside is a little dark and like a Roadhouse, but the service is warm and inviting.

Had the ribs at Dicky’s for dinner last night. They were well seasoned and tasty. Alongside, I went with the potato salad that had a strong dill taste — it was different but very good! The fried onion tanglers were crispy & salty.

Finally, some BBQ in Ferndale, though purists may object since it’s not the typical BBQ establishment like a Lockhart’s, Slow’s or Bad Brad’s…but it’s pretty decent for a fast grab and go type spot and the price is right. A solid 3.5+ stars.
I had the 3 meat plate with their pulled pork, beef brisket and spicy cheddar sausage. At $ 13 including two sides and a roll it was a steal. Their Mac n’ Cheese was creamy and similar to a Velveeta cheese sauce which was pretty solid. Something crunchy on top would’ve made this amazing. The Green Beans with Bacon were pretty tasty but I didn’t see any actual bacon and the bacon flavor was subtle at best… but I liked them. Their rolls are buttery and warm and I should’ve used it as a sandwich bun for the pile of meat. You may want two of them.
The meats themselves were great. The pulled pork was tender and fairly juicy. The brisket was again tender and had a nice smoke ring on it and the cheddar sausage was just the right amount of spicy and had pockets of cheddar running throughout the link. It was all pretty fantastic. The only thing I didn’t get was any Q sauce with the meal… not sure how I forgot that but it could’ve only made everything that much better.
I dig this place. It’s affordable and fast and the service was friendly and genuine. The manager even thanked me at the door for dropping by. Worth a stop for sure.

The anticipation built for weeks as we watched the construction of a new local BBQ joint just blocks from home. Though it was a franchise barbecue joint I still had high hopes that it would become a favored local haunt.
Finally, they opened this week and we even waited a couple days further to allow them to get their staff and processes in order. The day of feasting soon arrived and with much delight I opened the containers and wrappers to find…
…one of the most tasteless and bland brisket sandwiches I’ve ever bitten into. Even after slathering it in their sauce I found myself yearning for *Arby’s* — seriously, it was that disappointing. The Mac and Cheese instantly reminded me of KFC’s (think Kraft and squeeze cheese). The ‘Barbecue Beans’? Like opening an old can of Heinz (except the Heinz would have more flavor).
The good? Ummm… it didn’t make me sick and my stomach is full now. Pretty damned far from satisfied though.
I suppose if you’re the type who goes to Applebee’s while on vacation and thinks Pizza Hut has good pizza then you *might* like the fare at Dickey’s.
But what if you want *good* barbecue? Go to LazyBones… or Slow’s…or Lockhart’s…but avoid this franchise joint that sells disappointment with Bland sauce.
