Specialties

We offer basic maintenance, performance parts installation, custom ECU tuning, high performance engine building and installation, and full custom welding and fabrication. We choose to do everything in house to maintain our extremely high quality standards. While we specialize in Subaru’s, we are happy to work on most cars and projects. We have experience with most major makes and are especially excited to work on any car or project that is fun and/​or original. Established in 2004.

With over 12 years of experience in software engineering and a great passion for his own Subaru, Ed found himself learning to tune in order to improve the performance of his own car over 7 years ago. Soon friends within the Subaru community were becoming happy customers, and the rest is history. After over 5 years of success as a one man operation, Ed decided to expand Equilibrium Tuning into a full service, and R&D shop in Fairfield, CA. Since opening, the Equilibrium Tuning shop has experienced tremendous success in tuning, engine assembly, performance installation, and custom fabrication. Equilibrium is constantly growing and expanding into new makes and models as well as new innovative products and services.

EQTuning all the way. I drove 2 hours from San Jose to get a supercharger installed on my Scion FRS, and their reputation, experience, and service made me a happy customer.
I met Patrick at the GT86 Summer Kickoff meet in Livermore, CA and already knew that I wanted to go forced induction. We spent a while on email talking about several kits, and I finally decided on the Jackson Racing supercharger (CARB legal), oil cooler, and Koyo radiator. I then sent them a check for parts, and a couple of weeks later the SC came in. They did a pretty good job of keeping me in the loop, and I was anxiously waiting to schedule an installation.
I showed up on their door on Monday at 9 am, they offered to give me a ride to my rental car, and I showed up on Tuesday at 4 pm to pick it up. Tom, the tech, seemed very attentive to detail and gave me a run down of the new parts.
Now comes the good part; if you drive a GT86, you know it is in desperate need of more power, it’s missing that oomph in the mid-​rpm range that makes it seem like a scrawny teenager instead of a drifting Bruce Lee doing round-​house kicks on every corner and then accelerating away giving you a smirk in the process.
Why did I choose Jackson Racing? Frankly, I wanted a reliable company and a CARB legal kit so I wouldn’t have to worry about inspection.
Why EQTuning in Fairfield? These guys are pros, and after spending so much money on it, I have the peace of mind that they did an excellent job, and if I need to come back for a tune, they’ll take care of me. Ed, the shop owner, races his own GT86, and their shop is filled with GTRs, WRXs, and the sort, so they know their customers.

Great service and great people to work on your car. They will be honest and point you in the right direction. Got my fenders rolled and had them install lowering springs for my Lexus gs350 and the quality of work was worth every penny.

This place is a rarity in the tuning/​automotive repair world. Everybody is straight forward and friendly. I’ve had a couple of items installed there and each time, even as hiccups pop up, the job is completed to their high standard as quoted. I will continue to make the 1 hour drive, in-​order to have my car worked on by EQ. Ed, Brandon, Patrick collectively have earned my business from here on out.

My brother took his EVO X there for a custom tune after installing a fuel pump and bigger injectors. We got the car back at the end of the day. They were quite professional and easy going and needless to say my brother is duly impressed by the newfound power and quality of the tune. Patrick especially is a top notch guy, super patient and just a nice guy. They are lucky to have him. The owner does all the tunes and is thorough and considers your modifications and driving style before designing the tune.
All in all he is very happy and I would certainly consider them for my FRS needs as well. If you have the need for speed check EQ out!!!

I find myself coming back to EQT for ECU tuning on my STI. Recently I have installed the Tomei equal length headers. Tuning is needed to maximize performance gains of the hardware. I came to Ed for the job. And he did not disappoint!
Ed took his time to discuss with me what I want. How aggressive. How I want the throttle response. I felt, as the customer, he put value on my input on how I want my car dialed in with his tuning. He also took his time to dyno tune my STI. He went out on the road to iron out any potential oddities. And finally, he ask me to drive my car with him for a drive around to ensure I was happy with the tune. This level of customer service is as good as it gets!
I am very much enjoying the new found power of the equal length header on my 2015 WRX STI; tune is on E85 fuel [344whp/​435wtq].

They did an excellent job. Tuning was quick in my forester and for it being stock with a vf39 and mild mods it pulled 315 hp and 465 torque and 400 torque at the wheels. Night and day differenxe with a 450 $ tune. Money well spent. Take your car here for a tune dont risk joe blo

Ed is super nice, very professional and really knows his stuff. I had a crap tune from GST Motorsports that only was pushing 290 whp on e85 running really rich. IDC’s were 105%. Ed was able to make 340 whp with the IDC’s at 90%. He even eliminated the stumble and cold starts I was experiencing. Customer service is top notch.
I would highly recommend EQ Tuning for any install or tuning over any shop in the bay area.

I took my STi to EQ after I had a good experience with my 02 WRX. Ed’s tune by far was the best, and this is someone who has had 6 tunes. He believes in manual boost controllers which a good thing, as I wish other tuners would get on the same page.
He tunes for drivability and actually drives the car, unlike other tuners who just throw it on the Dyno, and call it a day.
His shop is really good too, and can do really extensive builds. All the employees are super friendly and they truly know Subarus inside and out!
I would put EQ Tuning on the top of my list for trustworthy, honest, and truly educated and passionate Subaru shops.

Took my ’13 WRX here for a pro tune. I still «get hard» every time I drive my car! BTW– I live really close to GST motor sports, I’ve taken my car and my sons WRX there for work, left felt like I’ve been taken advantage of. I only trust Ed with our cars. I hope this is helpful.

Jermaine J — I’ve been to EQ quite a few times now and I’ve got to say, they’ve really taken care of me. The first time was to just meet everyone and I got a very good vibe out of the place, especially the lead tech Brandon.
I had been looking for exhaust parts for quite a while at the time and went by EQ to ask questions about my options, not only did they spend the time to explain about what I could do and make recommendations, but they actually had all of the parts that I needed right at the shop already which Ed was happy to sell to me at a discount. I was able to purchase the parts and have them installed in one appointment! It couldn’t get better than that!
Later on down the line I came back to EQ for a header swap and my first pro-​tune and I immediately noticed a difference when finished. The car was smoother overall and a lot better to drive. I later came back to Ed for an E-​85 tune which I’ve been running for the past 2 – 3 months with zero problems.
I really have to say, EQ has been more than accommodating with my demanding schedule every single time I’ve come to them for work (I work in SF). Even opening the shop to drop my car off on the weekend when I was unable to make it during the week. I’m the type of guy that has A LOT of questions and likes to learn, and every single time I’ve come in (even just to chat) they were willing to take time to give me tips and tricks to keep my car running smooth. Patrick is always willing to go over, and over, (and over again) all of my questions, before, during, and after
My hat goes off to Brandon; this guy is one of a kind. We must have spent hours just talking about my car, his cars, his projects, my plans for my car, and everything in between; and all this when I wasn’t even getting any work done at the shop. He’s ALWAYS ready to go above and beyond and is one of the most genuine and honest people I’ve met.

I was having problems with my car starting on a Friday afternoon. I called about 5 different places to see if they can look at it. Most of them said can’t do anything until Monday. So I called equilibrium tuning a guy named Patrick answers told him my problem. At first he said something like… that would be something you should take to a specialist to look at. I was like ok thanks for you help. Whatever No big deal. No more then 10 minutes passes and he calls ME back!!! Whaaaatt? Tells me he talked to one of the mechanics and they can take a look at it around 1 after their lunch. I said cool I’ll come by soon. Got there very HELPFUL and FRIENDLY people. He (forgot his name also the guy that fixed my car) came out and looked said it could be the starter. Ordered the part came back in Monday had me in and out in 1 hour! Car starts and runs good now. I will be coming back to this place! Big thanks to Ed and Patrick

UPDATE — Just hit 135K miles, the last 55K with a VF43, Cobb downpipe and exhaust and Ed’s tune. Haven’t had a problem with my car and it remains more fun to drive than when I picked it up with 12K miles on it seven and a half years ago. Thanks for a great tune and for keeping my wagon on the road, Ed.

I took my 2006 STi to EQ Tuning for the 30k checkup, leakdown & compression test, and a downpipe swap. I was thoroughly impressed. EQ Tuning’s facilities are pristine. We discovered that my resonator had a hole in it and my exhaust gaskets were also bad after years of use, and all were replaced the same day at a very reasonable price. In fact, all of EQ’s services were fairly priced — I called up lots of local Suby shops and tuners and EQ’s was even better than the average. At the same time, there was no sacrifice in quality at all. I wasn’t even going to get an oil change because I had recently gotten one from my local Subaru dealership using OEM synthetic oil, but I went ahead with the oil change at EQ anyway and they showed me the oil that was in my car — it looked terrible, so in retrospect I am extremely glad I went ahead with the oil change. When swapping my downpipe, it turns out I needed a custom tune because my Cold Air Intake won’t pass smog (the APS 70mm). Ed tuned my car, no questions asked, and didn’t charge me for it — he didn’t even mention it. Things like this are what wins trust and loyalty — I’m going to tune my car with E85, and I can get it tuned locally (a 20 minute drive or less) or I can drive an hour and a half to Fairfield and have Ed do it. You better believe I’m going to be driving up to EQ Tuning.
