I can’t really say enough good things about Red 7 Salon. It’s been a little while since my last visit but that’s because of being a busy working mom. I’ve never had a bad experience here and can’t begin to say enough AWESOME things about Matt. He has always given me a great cut. I usually give him an idea of of what I’m thinking and let him do his thing. I’ve never had to worry if I’m going to like the end result because I ALWAYS do! I came in today and it was like no time had passed we chatted got caught up on each other’s lives and I walked out a new woman! I don’t mind making the 30 minute drive to come here. Thanks again Matt and Red 7!

Matt saved me from a horrible stretch of haircuts! I researched short, pixie cut for naturally curly hair, and he was a true find! I have gained a friend, an outstanding stylist, and a free home décor consultant. I have been to salons on Oak Street, Michigan Ave. all over Lincoln Park, and Red 7 of Evanston has been a great fit. I get compliments on my hair all the time!

I’ve been getting my hair cut at Red 7 Salon for the past year and I’ve been impressed with their service and the quality of the cut. I’ve been getting my hair cut by Lindsey and she’s been great. She’s easy to talk to and does a great job. In particular, I like how they, as the owner put it once, «celebrate my hairline». Too many hair salons and barbershops try to cover up my receding hairline with goofy haircuts. I love the haircuts I get and I think I look sharp and professional. The scalp massage and hand massage are pretty great too! I highly recommend the folks at Red 7 Salon.

I admit it, I am a salon hopper. I am always looking for the best cut and I don’t know why it’s so difficult to find! It’s not just good enough to leave the salon looking good, I have to be able to replicate the Do myself. Well, right now I am not hopping anymore, since I found Sarah at Red 7 Evanston. She is amazing! She has now cut my hair 3 times, each cut was different, adorable and so easy for me to do myself. The only reason I gave the salon 4 stars is because they are so expensive! The cut at 65 $ is ok for me but in January I paid 100 $ for a single process, ouch, that hurt! So i don’t get color here anymore.

Today was my first visit to the salon, and I absolutely loved it! Being a first time customer, I was given a tour of the salon, and was offered something to drink. Alex was so friendly and cut my hair exactly how I wanted it! Although I came in for a trim today, she trimmed and shaped my hair around my face just perfectly! I loved that she took things slowly so as not to cut too much. I also needed a consultation before getting my hair colored, and I loved how honest and detailed she was about what would happen to my hair and what may need to be done. Overall, I loved how friendly and helpful everyone was. I only knocked off a star because of the price, but it was totally worth it! (I have very high standards and have been trying different salons in the past couple years). Despite that, I am definitely coming back!

My last review was taken down because it lacked «substantive consumer experience.» Let me remedy that. Some recent experiences at Red 7:
(1) I watched the owner talk down to a stylist in front of me. It was embarrassing for the stylist, and embarrassing for me (the client).
(2) The salon – which was no longer under construction – was incomplete. In particular, the area where you get your hair washed was not separated. It was quite uncomfortable, and didn’t look great.
(3) The salon in general is really chilly. Maybe they need better insulation
(4) No one offered me water when I stepped into the salon on my most recent visit (or wine, like they used to!)
(5) The salon, even after being «updated,» doesn’t look particularly clean or modern.
(6) Poor customer service.
(7) I will say this: the colorist did a fabulous job on my hair. Unfortunately, she doesn’t work there anymore, so I have no reason for going back– my bad substantive consumer experience guaranteed that.
These are my substantive consumer experiences at the salon. I won’t be going back. I’m sure I can find other options in the Chicagoland area.

I have been going to Lilly for over a year now. I have dirty blonde hair and have been getting highlights done in order to cover my roots up. She continuously perfects my hair and I am never disappointed in the color or technique she uses.
The first time I went to her I hadn’t had a color done in months (due to a bad experience at another salon). She was still able to make my hair significantly lighter even though I had over eight inches of growth! She picked the perfect color for me to get blonder while not making it look brassy or copper-​y as other salons have done.
This past time I did a full highlight and she took her time to make sure the color was perfect in every section of my hair. It’s awesome that I can wear my hair up or down and show off my highlights!
Definitely recommend Lilly. She knows exactly what to do for all types of hair!

I just have to rave about Lily at Red 7 Evanston. Lily has done my hair twice: both for highlights. The first time we went with honey-​colored highlights, and recently I went a lot more blonde. Lily is a wonderful colorist. She listens and she always makes sure she understands exactly the look I am going for. She is incredibly talented, and very sweet, too! Five stars for sure! :)

I’ve lived in Evanston for nearly a year and it’s taken me quite a while to check out this place. I am happy that I did! Lindsey is the

I have short relaxed hair and I love that I can get in and out fairly quickly. Lindsey is such a great stylist and she is a master with a pair of shears. The scalp and hand massage is a great added touch (but not life altering) and the products are pretty damn great.
So, why did I knock off one star? The prices are super high. A relaxer here is around $ 105 whereas at an African American salon, it would be $ 75 to get a relaxer with the same brand. Granted, Lindsey is definitely worth the extra $ 30 and has given me the absolute best relaxer services that I’ve ever had, but I do feel like I’ve been «Bruce Lee’d» in the chest whenever I hand over my credit card to pay.
My other pricing issue is the «cut.» I didn’t get a full cut of my hair — it was a trim to take off a split ends and shave my nape — for $ 65. This is not a cut — it’s a trim. There is a distinct difference in giving me a new look vs. dusting my ends. Again, at African American salons, this is usually included in the cost of the $ 75 relaxer and will be an additional $ 20 on non-​relaxer days. I totally felt like Chicago’s own Bishop Don Juan pimped slapped me when I paid $ 65 for trim.
When the total cost of the relaxer, «cut» and at-​home maintenance products, totaled $ 230 — which is $ 100 more than I would pay at a different salon for the same services — I saw the white light and thought that I had truly met my maker. I had to keep yelling «Do not go toward the light!» to myself.
So, Lindsey is definitely my go-​to girl for my hair from now on, even with the exorbitant prices that I have yet to wrap my mind around yet. I’ll just have to eat grilled cheese sandwiches and drink Chicago’s finest tap water so I have enough to cash to get my hair done here. Yeah, I know that rachet and I’m sure the crackhead look isn’t too far off with this plan, but my hair will be lusciously on point.

I have been coming here for about a year and a half and I highly recommend this salon! I have gotten my hair colored by two stylists in the past, Michelle and Maggie, but for scheduling reasons I got in a consistent routine with Maggie, and she is my homegirl. I trust her completely to do a quality job and give me exactly what I’m looking for. We’ve gone light, dark, full/​partial highlights, single process, ombré and I am never disappointed. She is in her 20’s like myself, which I love bc I really feel like she understands my style, on trend looks and we really connect!
The salon is beautiful, very clean, fabulous complimentary services like beverages, scalp and hand massages! Little things that just round a perfect pamper day and are so important. Their services are definitely not the cheapest in town but ultimately you get what you pay for and it’s so worth it.
No parking lot but I’ve never had a problem finding street parking and if your appt runs longer and you go over your time they’ll feed the meter for you. fyi Tips are cash only.

What a wonderful, warm inviting salon. Being a senior, I have skipped around Evanston for years. I became tired of the regular «white hair» do, and the «butch» style, so my interest was taken with the reviews.
Gabriel did my hair and it is the best haircut I have ever had. Even my husband said that. Which means he noticed. The shape, the upkeep, design, everything about it was perfect for me. I can also take a little longer with haircuts because the shape is so natural to my hair.
In other words, I am VERY pleased.

Matt is an utter delight, and he is my go-​to guy in Chicago. He is so fun to talk to, and he’s a true artist. The best part, though? He will NOT push you into getting a haircut you aren’t comfortable with. I am super duper low-​maintenance, and he has *always* respected what I’ve wanted. Even if I wasn’t sure, he asked questions and gave me suggestions that helped me figure out what I wanted. I always feel like a million bucks walking out of the salon! That being said, it is pricey, but for good reason. They have a talented, hardworking, warm staff and they use great products, so I’m willing to pay more for the experience, absolutely.

I’ve been going here on and off for about 5 years now; been with 2 other stylists until I settled upon Matt. I don’t mean settled in that sense because Matt is a great stylist and probably gives me the best men’s cut I’ve ever had. I say on and off because I can’t always fit my schedule into Matts and when I OCD on getting a cut, I have to get a cut like NOW. Lol. Anyway, like I said Matt really knows how to cut my hair although its a bit pricey for a dude $ 65. Nevertheless I can justify it coz I’m vain. There I said it.
Service comes with a hand massage, which is hit or miss depending on who does it. It’s not the kind you’d get at a mani pedi place folks so don’t get excited. Red 7 will also provide you with wine or coffee or tea, which is a nice touch. I also like getting my products here as they have Bumble & Bumble. Now they have Evo products which I’ve grown to love. I’ve had pretty good luck here with front staff as they’re usually friendly, efficient and customer friendly. Keep it up Red!

My only experience at Red 7 has been with Kara. As a dude, I’m not usually too picky about who’s doing my hair. One cut is as good as another, right? Well now I have seen the light. Over the past year Kara has given me some of the best looking cuts I’ve ever had, but most importantly, they LAST. I used to get my hair cut every three or four weeks because it was clearly getting shaggy and unkempt at that point. Kara’s cuts look good when I leave the salon and continue to look good for six weeks. If I lived closer I would stop in between cuts for a quick touch-​up and probably stretch it to eight weeks or more.
Reception and other staff have always been pleasant. The salon itself is a comfortable atmosphere and I enjoy being there. They do have a small apprenticeship program (ask about being a model, cheap cuts and color!) and it’s interesting to see how the teaching staff interact with the students — I never knew people could care about hair so much :) But really I’m not there for the ambiance I’m there for a haircut, and Kara delivers the goods. Do yourself, your hair, and your girlfriend a favor and make an appointment!

Gabriel is amazing. I have never liked my hair and always looked to stylists (at high end salons) to recommend a cut that would suit me, and I always ended up with the same haircut that did nothing for me. However, that all changed with Gabriel. I was skeptical when he said he was taking 4 – 5 inches off (I am not a short hair girl) but he knows exactly what he is doing and I was amazed at how great I looked when I waked out today.
As for the rest of the salon, the customer service is great – they are friendly and knowledgeable and they dont push product on you at all.

After a decidedly marginal haircut elsewhere in Evanston, I needed to find a new haircutting home. And I did! Red 7 is fantastic. I’ve been twice now — different stylists each time — and each time I not only walked home loving my hair, but I still loved it days later, after I’d styled it myself, which is, or course, the true measure of a haircut.
Everyone there was so friendly. Not at all pretentious. And while people explained the products they used in my hair, it wasn’t pushy.
Reminds me that I should probably schedule an appointment soon!

I had an itch for a haircut and didn’t feel like going to my usual stuffy salon in the North Shore and found Red 7 through Unilocal.I was not disappointed! The place had a great vibe as soon as I walked in — funky but not pretentious and just great staff– from the person at the front desk to the stylists.
I was booked for a hair color and a haircut but upon my consult, Adrienne suggested that I return for my hair color another day when I have more time so she can do the service the justice it needed. I appreciated that she didn’t try to squeeze me in just so she can get it over with! Gabriel did my haircut and he had the gentlest touch that relaxed me the whole time. Awesome place– I think I’ve found my new hair salon!
