Kent Horner owner/​operator of C & H Gardens not only has 35 years experience with trees, plants and creative design, he is sensitive to Feng Shui principles and, beyond the garden he is an accomplished pianist, singer/​songwriter, a lifelong surfer and pilot/​instructor. The more extensive your experience, expertise, relationships and social interactions, the more you understand people and their needs. That is Kent Horner’s specialty: He really knows people — and plants. Kent has spent his life in California. «I know the microclimates, the needs, the vegetation,» he says. «I can create a beautiful landscape that requires minimal maintenance and it will look good for years to come.“Horner’s custom designs include softscape, hardscape (ponds, fountains, patios, decorative paths and barbecues), as well as irrigation and lighting. With his artistic ability and hands on experience working among the plants he surrounds himself with year after year. Kent creates custom desgins for each client.

If you are looking for an arrogant know it all to TELL you what you want, and you want to pay a boatload for it, and you have a crew of gardeners coming on a regular basis to maintain his creation, Kent might just be your guy. It’ll probably look great when he leaves, but…
The first lie he told was that he LISTENED to his clients. Our main concerns were safety and privacy. We have removed and replaced (at no small expense) hardscape (broken brick pathways) after at least 5 people tripped on it. The bamboo he put in is invading out neighbors yard, our walkways, lawn & gardens. He had told us we’d be dead before it went anywhere. He claimed he has it at his house for years and it hadn’t gone anywhere. Now we’re stuck with the expense and hassle of having it all contained or removing it. Apparently that can take months or years!
We told him we wanted to keep our beautiful white Bougainville. He said it had to go «Bye-​Bye» When I insisted we keep it he cut it so far down it never recovered. We also wanted to keep three mature Pittosporum that blocked our view of wires in our alley. These were moved and became deceased shortly after he pulled out. He did replace one of them
Did we mention that he had a shouting match with the gardeners next door — who are wonderful, we’ve known them for years. Over something his people did. So rude and unprofessional!
The mulch he used was full of weeds that make kudzu look like a friendly neighbor. we have replaced almost every plant he put in.

Hired Kent because I wanted privacy in my backyard. Kent suggested bamboo and promised that it would meet my expectations. He definitely charged a premium price, but I thought hey «you get what you pay for» right? Unfortunately, not in this case. The bamboo that was planted was very bare, and did not give my yard any privacy what so ever. I brought this concern to Kent and he stated «in 6 months it will be full», well I have waited 2 years and there is no improvement. I am out $ 6k and no privacy 2 years later, I would not recommend Kent’s business, he is either dishonest or incompetent.

I spoke with Kent two weeks ago when he came out to take a look at some trees that need trimming on my property. He showed up on that Monday 45 minutes later than the time he had chosen in shorts and sandals and spent 3 minutes at my home. He gave me a price and said he could come out and do the job on Saturday «in the morning» without giving a time window. I should have known at that point he was not interested in my business from his dismissive attitude.
Saturday morning came and went and Kent was a no call no show. I called him at 2:30 that afternoon and he stated they were busy with another job that ran long and couldn’t make it that day. I was understanding and agreed to have him come out today. He again said «in the morning» and I asked for a time window and he gave me a 30 minute time frame in which he promised he would be here.
It is now Saturday and he again is a no call no show. If you have taken the time to read this then I think you may be able to feel my frustration. I do not recommend working with Kent and C&H Gardens ever. Very poor business practices and no respect what so ever for potential clients.

It is such a pleasure to work with good people! Kent responded to my call immediately and was able to provide an estimate within a few days. He is on site at various times, providing a genuine sense of caring and professionalism. His crew was exceptional as they trimmed trees and removed a large Bottle Brush. The clean up was excellent and the price reasonable. Day two was spent on my ancient sprinkler system and Isreal and Juan spent the day putting in drip lines, new efficient heads, and rerouting pipes. They worked non-​stop and were so communicative with me, answering my questions with patience and obvious knowledge. It was not simple to find someone to tackle the sprinkler job and I feel blessed to have a company like C&H help me out. I would not hesitate to call Kent with all future landscaping needs and he earned these 5 STARS!

We had Kent and his crew take out our front lawn and put in drought tolerant landscaping about five months ago. Their price wasn’t cheap, but it was comparable to the other two quotes we received and Kent didn’t try and talk us into more than what we were looking for (another company told us we needed to spend two to three times what we had budgeted). We also liked the fact that the crew would put back our existing landscape lighting that was only two or three years old and was wired underground. Kent worked with us on the design and incorporated our ideas, as well as our existing palm trees. We also had them pour a new front walkway that was more aesthetically pleasing.
The crew came on a Monday and were completely done by Friday afternoon. They cleaned up every day and didn’t leave a mess. Kent came by every day, at least once, to check on the work his guys did. The result was a beautiful front yard that was lush with many flowers and plants. The yard has continued to thrive and looks amazing. We still get compliments from people walking by. Three or four people have even knocked on our door asking for Kent’s contact info. A short time after the yard was completed, my husband noticed a drainage issue and called Kent. He was out with one of his crew the next morning to fix it.
We are more than pleased with our front yard and are happy to recommend C and H Gardens.

Kent and his team did a great job adding cement to our front yard: a concrete walkway and stairs and an extension of our driveway. Kent came out to our house twice to provide estimates and answer questions about the job. His pricing was very reasonable and he has great knowledge about logistics and aesthetics of concrete work.
When I scheduled the work to be done, the crew showed up on time and ready to work. The first day they seemed to not get very much done and I started to get nervous because they had promised to be done in two days. The next day most of the crew was late and Kent wasn’t there to check on the previous day’s work, so I called him up to express my concerns. The rest of the crew showed up soon after and worked hard the rest of the day. Kent arrived a few hours later to check on everything and chat with me about the job, and I began to feel much better about everything.
The job did end up taking an additional day, but that is mostly because of the time-​consuming, meticulous job the crew did on the stairs. They made sure the wood forms were even, balanced, level, and sturdy. When the concrete was poured, they spent the entire day forming and smoothing the concrete so it was both beautiful and strong. The lines their designer put in the front walk and stairs are so lovely and really transform them into beautiful works of art.
The crew was very nice to me and my small kids as they worked, even letting me put the kids’ handprints in the wet driveway. They cleaned up pretty well after everything was done, although I’m still finding small bits of trash, nails, and cement residue throughout the yard. Not a deal breaker, but still annoying.
Overall I definitely recommend C&H for concrete work, both decorative and practical.

C&H delivered a high quality landscaping from design thru execution. The finished product completely transformed our back yard and my wife and I love it! The project was on time and on budget. How often is does that happen?! This process was unexpectedly easy for us, and that has not my typical experience with home improvement projects.
Our project started when Kent came out and gave us his vision. We hired him to create a design that he delivered immediately. The design vastly improved the flow and function of our yard. He then provided us with a detailed quote for C&H to begin construction. The quote was more than I expected, but I hadn’t done a project as large large as this one in the recent past. After some research, I found his quote to be within reason, and we hired C&H the following week.
I was very impressed with the skill of the workers, the attention to detail and the follow up with Kent almost daily. Carlos, the project lead was very organized and knowledgeable. He was able to keep the project moving forward through each phase with extreme efficiency. We could see the results daily over the 4.5 weeks of construction. Everyone one on the team was professional, courteous, and really listened to our questions and requests. Each of the workers appeared to have specific areas where they excelled.
After seeing the tremendous amount of work that was involved in our project, I became even more satisfied with the price. We plan to call Kent, Carlos & the team for any future landscaping projects.

This review is for work done over a year ago. We had a Canary Palm that died and had to be removed. Kent was fabulous and was able to come over and quote us the same day we called. He offered an affordable solution to removing the tree and fabulous design suggestion of what type of plants to plant as a replacement. He was able to do the job quickly and his crew was fabulous.

I’m on the HOA board for a small 9-​unit complex in Encinitas. We had a ¼ acre greenbelt with grass that was very expensive to maintain. Our water bill was over $ 550/​month just to keep the grass green. Once the water restrictions kicked in, our «greenbelt» started turning into a brownbelt. We decided to apply for turf rebates and replace the grass with drought tolerant landscaping.
I’m so happy to say that C&H Gardens just completed the turf replacement project for us and completely transformed our space from blah to a peaceful paradise. Refer to my before and after photos and you’ll see what I mean. The results are way better than we imagined they would be!
We had a competitive bidding process and Kent came to the property several times to study the space. The design that C&H Gardens proposed basically kicked everyone else’s ass and showed the best understanding of how the people here use our common area. Their price was very fair and reasonable, too.
I was astonished by how quickly they completed the work. Their entire crew was very friendly and accommodating and it was a joy to have them around.
We just had some rain here and I emailed Kent to ask him to adjust the drainage system. He showed up first thing the next day and took care of it.
I“m 100% satisfied with the work that C&H Gardens did for us and would gladly refer them to anyone.

My in-​laws were going to extend their backyard by demolishing a small garden kitchen that was there before. This left them with a big empty space and so they decided to create a patio area with some beautifully arranged flowers and hedges to give them so privacy and a nice area to relax. My sister contracted this company to give them their wish of a beautiful outdoor area. The landscaping team came early the next day and sat with my in-​laws to discuss their wishes for their new garden/​private area. The lead designer listened while he sketches a design then showed them after he was finished. My in-​laws were astonished that he could capture exactly what they wanted in such a short time. The very next day they came with all their equipment, cleared the area and began installing a stone hedge wall and some hedges for privacy and flowering plants and a fire pit. They even created a nice walkway with pretty stones bordering it and a water fountain with a bird bath in the middle for the birds. My in-​laws were overjoyed with the results and the garden has now become their favorite place at their home.

I have had C & H do work for me and my clients on multiple occasions. Everything from tree service to full on landscape design and build. Kent and his team have gotten the job done everytime. If we were concerned or not sure about something Kent would help us through it. Even on a small tree job, Kent came through, he even helped us with some extras at no additional charge. Oh yea and he picks up the phone. It’s nice not to get the run around.

C&H whacked tree limbs from a tree on our property over hanging the property line on their client’s side. As Kent explained, this is legal, and I agree. It is also an ugly, lacking in aesthetic sense, result, where about 50% of the tree was removed. The tree is now at risk for balance, health, and appealing growth pattern. A C&H employee did cross onto our property without out permission to cut even more, and I had to ask the employee to leave twice. This behavior is illegal, although the employee was very polite, as were all of C&H’s ground crew. So if you simply want a largely legal result, without considering the impact on other property, this is your contractor.

We hired C&H to remove 2 giant 60 foot pine trees that fell in our yard and neighbors. He came to our house in Temecula on Monday and gave us his quote. We called him Tuesday to ask when he could start and he said his crew would be out on Friday. They showed up today right on time at 8am just as promised. This crew of men did an outstanding job!!! They were in and out in exactly 8 hours just as Kent had estimated. The clean up was amazing. They literally left no debris behind and even raked the lawns. They used their blowers and brooms and cleaned the entire back yard, side yard, driveway, sidewalks and even the street. They even got a bobcat in and out of our yard without any problems. Kent called us in the evening just to make sure all had gone well. I highly suggest using this company and I thank his crew for leaving my yard basically spotless. We will definitely be calling him again to have a 70 foot palm tree removed soon!!!

I was referred to Kent last month– about three weeks before I was having a big party at my house. I knew my yard needed some help but didn’t know where to start. I kept buying plants that didn’t do well and would spend more money replacing them. I showed Kent pictures of what I wanted — a formal garden that was in keeping with the style of my house and the interiors. I knew this wasn’t his style but he gave me exactly what the yard called for and added plants that I wouldn’t have considered before. He also updated the sprinkler system so it’s more efficient with watering and the trees/​plants are getting what they need.
Kent finished the project in less than 2 weeks and has followed up since its completion to make sure everything is thriving.
I would highly recommend Kent — he definitely knew how to interpret what I wanted and I couldn’t be happier.

We found C&H on Unilocal and quickly recognized that two of the reviews dealt directly with retaining wall issues similar to what we seemed to be facing. After we called for an estimate, Kent came out to take a look at our retaining wall the next day and he quickly concluded that it would not be necessary to rebuild the wall, but rather he pointed out the need to repair or replace the drainage system that was supposedly in place behind the wall and he voiced concerns presented by the large plantings located behind the wall that could eventually cause it to break.
We agreed to the terms and scope of work and over the next few days his team began what we knew would be a messy job. We were very impressed from the outset with everyone on the crew. As would be expected, things didn’t always go as planned, but Kent and his entire crew always demonstrated a, «Can Do» approach to problem solving and they were quick to address all loose ends. Although in the end, much of the work that we paid for was underground, we knew from what we could see and what we knew had been done below the surface that the work had been professionally done. Although our job was a muddy undertaking, by the time they concluded the job, everything was in pristine order.
As with most things in life, «you get what you pay for.» I’m sure that with more shopping I could have found others that would have done the job below Kent’s quote. However, from the time Kent showed up to give us the estimate to the time his crew completed left the job, we never had any doubt whether we were getting our money’s worth and if we had do-​overs, we would have used Kent and his team all over again (though I sure hope we never have to do that particular job again).

I found Kent at C&H through HOCOA which is a paid service that refers only the best home service companies. I just moved to a condo and intentionally asked the owners not to do anything to the garden because I wanted to personalize it.
Kent came out and really listened to what I wanted and gave me a quote. At first I thought it was high, but when I added up everything that would have to be done, it was actually LESS than if I did it myself!
The next day Kent showed up with Chris and another worker and showed them exactly what I wanted. He was RIGHT ON — proof he was really listening. They dug right in (pun intended!) and the next day Kent, Chris and another worker who specialized in sprinkler/​drip systems showed up to complete the job.
I AM DELIGHTED with the results. It is EXACTLY what I had in mind and even BETTER. My yard looks stunning and I can’t wait to sit in it every day.
