I have been in retail my entire working career of 19 years! The culture here at Road Runner Sports is the most amazing I have encountered in my career. I have been a long time customer of Roadrunners for over 10 years. Since I have always found shoes that work for me I suggested it to my friend that was just getting into working out. She went through the whole ordeal of how her feet land, pressure points etc and was feeling great about everything up until he told her that she had the widest feet possible. Um, ok. But this is where it gets worse. As we sat down for her to try on shoes, he brings out men’s shoes in size 10. Her normal shoe size in women’s is a 10 and he told her to get an 11. Ok, fair. But then why would you bring out a men’s size 10?! If you work in shoes you would know that men’s shoe sizes are 2 less than womens. And without any explanation, he’s bringing out men’s shoes! Let’s be honest, it’s not about the color but the make of the shoe. Men’s shoes are built a tad bit more masculine. If I wanted a masculine shoe I would have asked for one. My friend tried them on and slowly started to feel uncomfortable and insecure. We asked the guy are you just bringing out only men’s shoes? He said, well that’s what he just said, referring to his colleague. I was trying to be that supportive friend and was trying to just have her try them. Everyone has that one friend that has overcome so much to get to where they are and sometimes something as simple as getting a shoe is a big deal. We left. So, thanks Roadrunners Columbia for bringing out men’s shoes to a female because, like you said, she has the widest feet possible.

I came away from my visit to Road Runner with mixed feelings. On the plus side, they have a good selection and an attentive sales staff. However this is outweighed by some negatives. First, their «Shoe Dog» evaluation process seems like a gimmick designed to sell you $ 79 custom insoles. One of the questions in the process is «where does it hurt when you run?» — I’m sure the solution to every malady will be custom insoles. The sales people’s spiel seems very scripted, and again focused on selling you custom insoles and their brand of socks.
They will also try to sell you a VIP membership for $ 20 or so, which through a combination of discounts and coupons will «actually save you money», and of course will renew automatically every year at $ 26 for your convenience. Check their web site to see the benefits of the VIP membership, and if you’re interested, sign up in advance of your visit for $ 1.99 (special web price which you cannot get once you are at the store). The $ 1.99 VIP special is worth having if you end up buying shoes, but just be aware of the auto renewal at the full price. Also be ready for a deluge of spam emails.
So between the custom insoles, store brand socks with special properties, shoes whose boxes don’t have prices, and the VIP membership, there is a lot of «selling» going on. It made for an experience where I felt I needed to be on the defensive. In the future I’ll instead go to a store with straight forward pricing and a less sales-​focused staff.

Ever since embracing the title of «Runner», I’ve been looking for an all inclusive style running store where I can find running shoes, gear, and products. Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve think I’ve found that place! This store is located in the same shopping center as Trader Joe’s Elkridge, MD. They offer a no-​obligation foot analysis called Shoe Dog. It basically tests the way your feet move and determines what shoe or insole is right for you. There is a video monitor that shows if your feet require a certain style of shoe or if insoles are required. I think it’s a fairly neat process. I took advantage of the feature. Be warned, if you decide the buy the insoles, they cost around $ 70. A small investment for long term goals to pursuing your running goals! Also, they offer a VIP membership that can be used to get 10% off purchases, 90 return policy, and best price guarantee.
Overall, this store is freakin’ awesome and a runners dream! wide variety of shoes, socks, shorts, shirts, and gels. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I went in on a whim and ended up doing a running analysis. This gave me the opportunity to see what my feet and ankles look like when I’m running so that I can ensure that I am wearing a shoe that has my prescribed stability, cushioning and size.
It was an eye opening experience as I was walked through the steps and received recommendations for running shoes. I’ll admit that I am a sucker for the aesthetics and didn’t really like the color and style of many of the shoes I tried on. When you think about it, if you are striving to improve your health, how the shoes look will come later.
No pushy sales people here. You can take the time to think about your purchase and return later. They’ll store your shoe profile for you. Sign up for their emails and they do have a VIP program that gets you discounts on many of their items.
There are also many other hard to find products for runners such as nipple guards, body glide (prevents chafing) and an array of clothing and accessories.
This store is well organized, all employees were professional and friendly. Parking is available without a problem and they take their time with you to make sure you can have to correct shoes for whatever type of work out you may perform.

5 stars for service. The staff here are awesome and go out of the way to help. My running group comes here in the cold months and this store hosts us in an incredible way. Have found some great sales and learned alot about running shoes. They have vendors frequently and you get to test drive shoes.

I have been coming to the store for years. I don’t require much. Help me find a shoe that fits my arch correctly and you have a sale.
Today I didn’t get two steps in the door before getting approached be some to do the shoedog test. I said I didn’t want it and they wanted to know how long ago I had it done previously. Wait. didn’t I just say I wasn’t interested? I realize this is part of their process and they are trained to do this (mostly so they can try to sell overpriced inserts).
After he realized this was not going to happen hetakes me to the back of the store and introduces me to someone else. If you’re not going to wait on me why did you waste my time?
The girl waiting on me was nice enough but was waiting on someone else too. I sat there woth the five pairs of shoes she brought out, tried them all on then she had to go to the register with the other customer. Waited for a while and watched some guy standing tgere evaluating another sales rep. Got bored. Another sales person do me putting on my shoes and asked if she could help. Well too late that’s why I was putting on my shoes. The last thing I wanted to do was go through this process all over with a third person
Their prices are not that competitive any more and everything about the experience was designed to raise the price. I left and I am not sue I am ever coming back.
Too much focus on selling and not enough on real customer service. Don’t need the door sharks like at a used car center or furniture store. More people waiting on customers abd naking them feel co. fortable as opposed to trying to sell more. The corporate strategy was too eazy to see and therefore customer service seemed and was fake.
Epic fail… to a former repeat customer!!!

I wish that I could give them more than five stars. The people that work here are amazing! They let me come in after the store closed so that I could purchase an item. I was standing in the parking lot when they closed. Someone held the door open for me and they were very helpful once I got in. There was only one color on the shelf so the lady went in the back and found the other colors for me. It is worth the drive out there for the wonderful customer service! !

They assess your running style n where u might need more support by having u run a bit n looking at ur feet. They ask u questions to figure out where u might need more support. Then they bring u several pairs of shoes that meet ur needs. They do try to sell u inserts helping to provide stability, balance, etc. according to what ur needs are.
I tried on about 3 pairs of running shoes n did buy a pair. Love the specialized care they give u. Your feet will thank too once u find the right shoes :-)

I love this store! I am a big fan of road runner sports. I had knee pain for years from wearing the wrong shoes. RRS helped all that. They have a great standardized fitting process with video taped running on a treadmill and ability to accuracy characterize how you run, type of arch, and therefore what the best shoes are for you.
Why they are better than most other stores: BIG selection. I usually try about 5 shoes and definitely find one that is much better than the others for me. I also pay to have their molded insert which seems a bit expensive… but sure works well for me. Great business model — run on them and return them if you don’t love them!
Ok, now… THIS store has a secret weapon — her name is Elora. She is the grass routes representative for Rockville and Columbia. She was conducting a couple of promotional events around St Patrick’s day. Her energy, charm, and enthusiasm for making shopping at RRS a fun and rewarding experience is unmatched! She turned RRS shopping into a family gathering and hanging out with friends! Best in class and I am still telling stories about my positive experience.

I’ve been coming to this store for 5 or 6 years. They offer a pretty good service in assessing your run type and what kind of shoe you need. They also label shoes by the type of support that you don’t get a regular shoe store. My entire family has been shopping there for years.
On the downside, I’m pretty sure they must earn some sort of commission because they are constantly trying to up sell you. They tried to sell my 9 year old $ 70 inserts. It was funny because they followed a script with her «When you run, where do you have pain.». It made us laugh because she was very confused.
I went in last night and they met me at the door and tried to convince me to get on the treadmill again. When I told them I didn’t need it, she explained I should do it at least once a year. I’m pretty sure this is because part of the treadmill run is selling you custom made inserts, like they tried to do with my 9 year old. The sales lady was basically harassing me and invading my personal space like a street merchant. I told her I just wanted to look at some shoes. In previous years their shoes were competitively priced but it doesn’t seem that way anymore. In the mens section, most of the shoes didn’t have the price in them. They seemed to have replaced the tags with stickers that must fall off pretty easy. This is a big deal when some shoes are $ 89 and some $ 150. I picked a low price shoe and she brought out another similar one that I might want to try. Surprise! They were $ 148. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Earlier in the day, I tried to create an account on their website to see if I could look through shoes before I got there, you can’t sign up without giving them your credit card number. It’s weird because I’m already a VIP and don’t want them to have my card# because I wasn’t going to buy anything but they don’t show you the VIP price without being logged in. It’s sad because it used to be such a great store, now they try to nickle and dime you out of money.
Make sure you tell them you are part of the Howard County Striders because you get another 10% off.
Pros: Great selection that’s ordered by foot/​running style. Good for people who are beginners and don’t know about running shoes. The service they offer is a must if you don’t know about stability, neutral, and motion control shoes.
Cons: Constant up selling and annoying high pressure sales people. Shoes overpriced. VIP price is equal to regular price at other stores. Online store is worthless and you have to enter your credit card to be a member.

They actually do help people who know nothing about proper running shoes.
The staff is very knowledgable about feet and shoe type for your feet and for the type if running you wish to do. They analyze your feet and foot issues very well.
If you buy enough stuff the VIP membership pays for itself and saves you money. They also give a military discount. Unfortunately their products are stupid expensive!

Just be sure to ask them to take off the auto renew for your VIP membership or else they will charge your card in a year to renew your membership.
UPDATE — downgraded to 3 stars in 2016:
I just realized they renewed my membership last November, a year after my first shopping trip and signing up for their VIP where I specifically asked them to take off the auto-​renew. I’m so disappointed. I don’t have a RRS near me anymore and I don’t want to order online.
Very upset as I’m trying to save money right now.

My husband bought a pair of running shoes and was pleased with the experience. I was a little put off by all the high fiving but I understand it is what they’re trained to do. Hubby wasn’t told the cost of the insoles up front but we found they cost $ 13 more at an athletic store in the Columbia Mall so at least they weren’t a rip off and he is happy with them. He paid $ 20 for the annual membership which he will get back in savings over the course of the year. I just found out they take donated running shoes which is another plus in my book. Be sure to check the retail me not app when you’re in the area. I noticed a 20% coupon in late June/​early July prior to the members only sale in late July.

Run Run Rudolph! Actually Run NO more once you run to Road Runners!
The pounding that your feet and body take when you go out for that run is insane and the only way to counter the forces is to have the proper shoes! Well Road Runners is the place to counter those forces. When you first walk in, you think ok great, these are all probably elite runs who do not want to be talking to a slow, short distance runner like myself… wrong, you are promptly greeted and asked what you are looking for so they can point you in the right direction. One of the first stops is the Dog shoe finder. They have a dedicated person walk and run you through the paces from a quick survey, pressure graph, and a video of you running. All of this takes a total of 10 min and it provides you with a wealth of knowledge and its FREE. The only Road Runners gets out of process is the chance to sell you on their truly custom insoles.
Once the 10min process is done, they guide over to where the shoes are located, but rather than trying to figure out which shoes is best for your running style, distance and goals… they already know all of that so they already have a short list of shoes that would be good for you, be it stability, neutral etc etc. At this point you enter the standard shoe shopping process, try on multiple shoes and determine which is best for you. Once you selecte the shoe for you can then check out and be on your running way.
The big difference to me from other sporting goods stores is the level of service that Road Runners offers. I can’t compare to the other running stores, but I never left feeling used or having bought something I did not want. Two other pluses are the VIP rewards program which gives you discounts and coupons. The other is their return policy, its 90 days for shoes and 30 days for their insoles, no questions asked which to me is pretty solid, if you are actually interested in buying running shoes then that return policy is great.
Overall, Road Runners is great, from service, selection and just overall feel of the place, I have been here several times and have enjoyed the experience every time. I would recommend Road Runners for any level of runner, from beginner to expert you can find your shoe and a reasonable price.
So watch out, on your left… Time to lace up your kicks!

Actually, excellent service. The whole «foot diagnostic» thing that they do is very informative.
And after studying my feet, he didn’t bring out shoes that were $ 200, he actually showed me shoes that were in the price range that I wanted. I hadn’t even told him what I wanted to spend, so that was a pleasant surprise.
One complaint I have is that the insole they custom make is double the price it should be. Like $ 80 just for an insert. No thank you. But if it had been $ 30, I probably would have bought it.
The other complaint is that a day or two after I gave them my email address, random spam started happening. Everyday for a few weeks was a spamfest. I gave it to no one else in that time, so…

I did the whole foot analysis to ensure I was getting the right shoes. Quick, easy and informative! The best part is the insoles that they fit you with are no obligation. If you don’t want them then don’t get them. The entire staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Know your budget before you go in there though. You can spend a lot of money in a hurry, but with there VIP membership (which is free) you can save a lot. I saved about $ 60. So weather you are in to running, walking, or just want to be fitted for a pair of shoes. This place should be on your list.

Awful service, they force you into the wrong shoes and try to force you into buying super expensive inserts you don’t need. Honestly, one of my friends worked here and said they just have a high schooler go in the back and mold the inserts… Are you kidding me?! The sales people have commission competitions to see who can sell the most inserts or shoes. Way too corporate — never going here again! Will only go to Charm City Run from here on out!

Excellent, excellent, excellent store! I went in this past Saturday morning and it was pretty busy. Being that this was my first time at their store and I wasn’t sure on what type of running shoes I needed, I was told I should do a feet analysis test.
The wait was about 10 minutes. I then met with a knowledgeable sales associate who had me run on a treadmill as the machine recorded my movement. Then, I stood on the balancing machine to determine the arch (or lack of in my case) in my feet as well as where my weight is distributed.
After that process (took about 15 minutes), the sales associate brought out about 8 pair of shoes for me to try on (all which felt great). I then selected the one I felt was the best and was allowed to run on the treadmill again with my soon to be new shoes.
Overall, it was a great experience. I left with some new running information and an order for great quality shoes (they didn’t have my size in the color I wanted) for a even better price!
Ordered shoes from store on Saturday, shoes arrived to my house on Tuesday.
Will be returning again!
