Business Owner

Michael Ajay, a Taekwondo pioneer in the Sacramento area, started his martial arts career at the age of 10 and through hard work and dedication earned his black belt at the age of 13. Throughout his long career Grand Master Ajay has earned a number of accomplishments which have earned him the honor of being inducted into the Taekwondo Hall of Fame. Other accolades include: Member of the United States team participating in the 1st World Taekwondo Championships in Seoul, Korea in 1973 (he was the youngest team member); National Champion in 1983 and 1984; and World Champion in the Masters Division in 1993. Grand Master Ajay has taught hundreds of students to become tournament champions; some of whom have also become National Champions!

Many years later, I convinced my sister to enroll my niece and nephew (5 and 6). My niece is extremely intelligent, an excellent athlete, but she is super shy and timid outside of the house. My nephew is smart, super outgoing, but needs to hone his motor coordination a little bit more and can get really scared at times.
The first day I took both of them to Ajay’s karate, my niece was turtled up and looked at her little feet the whole time. She was so scared of punching, kicking and meeting someone new. My nephew on the other hand was so excited to learn from Grand Master Ajay after I told him I learned from Master Ajay in the past. In fact Mrs. Ajay introduced herself to my niece and nephew, my nephew immediately asked «Oh oh, do you know Master Ajay? Is he your Master too??» which was followed by laughter by Mrs. Ajay and all the family members watching.
The next few months I’ve seen slow changes in my niece and nephew. She has gotten slightly more confident and learns so quickly. Even during her white belt testing, she was thrown a little bit of a wrench because she had to do a different routine with an older student — but she worked through it even though she was super nervous.
My nephew on the other hand was so scared when he was asked to break boards, he didn’t even want to leave the car. Master Ajay had to come out and talk to him — but he finally broke a board and he was so proud and stopped getting scared of it. He would show me all the broken boards and start punching, kicking and yelling super loud after — beaming with confidence.
I think Master Ajay did a great job trying to build up their confidence slowly — ie. he had them break more thin boards so that they could feel great about themselves, but he still provides them challenges when he sees them conquer things so quickly so they can struggle and work through things. I’m glad Master Ajay is teaching after all these years and I’m glad I was able to get my niece and nephew to train here.

When I was looking for a Martial Arts dojang for my daughter who was 6yrs old, 2 ½ yrs ago, looked at a few places in and around Sacramento and felt totally convinced Ajay’s Karate was the right place for her.
I feel convinced even today that we as Parents did the right thing for our Child, She Loves the Training and she has grown in several areas, not just in Taekwondo, her confidence level, Spirit to excel in things, Of Course learning the Martial Art Taekwondo itself and winning medals and trophies in tournaments, and it all comes down to the teachings she and the other students received from Grand Master Ajay himself. At Ajays Karate you Learn Skills which prepare Students to Face the Inevitable Challenges of Life. I whole heartedly recommend Ajay’s Karate to all my Friends and Family!!!

With so many crazy people out there, it is necessary for kids and adults to learn how to protect themselves or those in need. I am a college student at Sac State (where there has been a lot of ongoing crimes on campus) and something as simple as walking around the campus can become quite dangerous, especially at night. Therefore, taking a self-​defense class was in order. Mr. and Mrs. Ajay taught me so much and made me much more knowledgeable about what I should and should not do. They were extremely attentive and patient with me. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and everyone!

Thought Ajay was a genuine owner who cared about training kids… but turned out to be another business just about the $$$$ and binding contracts. Beware… you will be rushed into signing up! You think your getting a deal with the 12 months contract which actually is 13 months. Also BEWARE! he is not apart of any UWTA… so your training and belts may not be recognized by a real Taekwondo Organization. Most classes are at least 1hr. his just 30 mins… if you run into financial issues or emergency time off he will not work with you at all! O! YOUR MONTHLY pymts does not include breaking boards, You have to pay for each of your boards evertime you belt test… $$$$$ very costly for not being apart of an national association. Best bet if want to try him… Do montly dont sign any 6 mos or 12 mos contact!

We signed our son up for the 12 month program. The price for unlimited classes was a very good price plus the parents train free. Yes there are fees you have to pay, but that’s in all sports. Master Ajay is great with the kids and teaches his class how and when to use Karate (Taekwondo) My son looks forward to his class with master Ajay.

I went to AJ’s from Junior high to highschool and I am 37 now. I saw it had some bad reviews here… I just wanted to say, that I had an awesome experience at AJ’s. They helped me get into shape and build self confidence. Yeah, classes like this can be pricey, but as I remember… my family was never surprised by any fees, this place was always pretty straight up about everything. Anyway, I just felt I should post something… I don’t much care for seeing people tear down or trash something from my childhood that brought me a lot of joy. For these folks that gave bad reviews… I wonder what their kids would really have to say about THEIR experience if asked without their folks around. One man’s opinion.

My 2 God Sons have been students @ Ajay’s Karate for close to 5 years now. They have developed into 2 very disciplined young boys. They have both learned so much from Master Ajay and have also given back a few pointers by lending a helping hand to their classmates. I highly recommend Ajay’s Karate for beginners and advanced students of Martial Arts Training. Kids & Adults can benefit from attending Ajay’s Karate. They usually do very well during year round tournaments held in Reno & in North Sacramento. I have heard people saying that Ajay’s Karate is one of the best Martial Arts schools in Elk Grove. I agree 100%!

If you supply a great service that adds value to your students… CONTRACTS will never be required. Concentrate on teaching the art and loving your students and they will never leave, That is the best contract you can ever agree to.

We signed up for the 20 dollar special looking for something inexpensive for out three kids to do. Upon completion of the second week we were asked to stay after class to discuss our children’s progress. At that time we were offered a rate for 6 or 12 months of classes. The rate was about 2k for a year for three kids which sounded good. But we were told that we had only 24 hours to make a decision. We felt pressured and very uncomfortable but felt the price was reasonable. Then after signing the contract (which is the first one I have ever signed for a youth sport or activity) we were hit with all of the fees for things other schools include in the cost of their classes. The belt testing every other month at 90 bucks per kid. Board breaking for 3 bucks a board. Uniforms 40 bucks. The extra 5 or 10 for the patches on the uniforms not to mention the cost we had to incur for the usual things like sparing gear and tournaments. And when my husband was laid off and we could no longer afford to spend the 2 or 3 hundred dollars on a recreational activity the instructor would not work with us. It was overall a disappointing experience. Master AJ did work well with the kids and is very skilled thus the second star.

We heard of Ajay’s Karate from a print Ad. I called him to setup an appointment and learn more about the school. I was pleasantly surprised to know he personally teaches all his classes! For that he deserves 2 stars alone. At my kid’s first intro class, we found out his «special» from the Ad was worthless. He tried to sway us from that and sign up for the 6 or 12 month commitment. He was discontent after we told him we wanted his special. Thankfully he still honored his coupon. We got the first month for around $ 68 and paid additional for the Ajay patch, but shouldn’t this be part of the Free Uniform? Summary from the month introduction:
Pros:
+ Knew the kid’s names
+ Lower priced than other schools
+ Tries to add humor to classes
+ Teaches something different at each class
Cons:
— Had the kids jump impossible obstacles (way above their height) and praised taller and older kids for jumping over, I’m not a psychologist, but isn’t that bad for their self-​dignity?
— No water breaks.
— Does not consistently teach discipline and control as much as other schools. My kid needed to know self control and when it was appropriate to use karate.
— Does not consistently teach kids what how to kick or punch correctly.
— Classes seemed short at less than 25 minutes.
— Did not usually warm up the kids and teach them how to stretch.
In the end we decided to try out another martial arts establishment. The sales tactics and teachings just didn’t sit well with me. I needed to feel genuinely comfortable with the instructor since this was a longterm commitment for the kid to become a black belt and lots of money.

I’m only giving it two stars because he is good with kids. If it was based on service, I’d give it one star or even down to half a star.
We signed both our kids up and even prepaid for a whole year. Demonstrates our commitment, right? 1 ½ months into it, one of our sons had a medical complication and was told to restrict this type of movement until after surgery (which was a total of 2 – 3 months). We went directly to Master Ajay, explained our unique situation and asked if he would please suspend our account until the dr gave us the green light.
He stuck to his contract and said it was for the following 12 months but would allow us a 1 month suspension. What??? If we had just done month to month, we wouldn’t have had this problem — but no, we gave him a full year’s dues. Our paying in full was not taking a place in his class from someone else, especially if we worked out our return date with him. Inflexible and showed us he only wanted our money. We were out a couple thousand.
