South Bay Allergy and Asthma Associates began in 1991 when Dr. Edward Buchsbaum and Dr. Joyce Schoettler partnered to provide their own unique brand of specialty allergy and asthma care to patients of all ages in the South Bay community. Your goals come first. We will custom tailor a treatment plan to free you of limitations imposed by allergy and asthma — freedom to get back to doing the things you love!

Business Owner

Dr. Buchsbaum is Board Certified in Allergy/​Immunology and Internal Medicine. Originally from New York, he and his wife have raised three daughters in Palos Verdes, and are avid road cyclists and skiers. He also enjoys reading, theater, music, and gardening.

Dr. Schoettler is Board Certified in Allergy/​Immunology and Pediatrics. She and her husband have raised two children in Southern California, and can be spotted on the soccer sidelines cheering on their daughter. Dr. S also enjoys kayaking, photography, and reading.

Dr. Marks-​Cogan is Board Certified in Allergy/​Immunology and Internal Medicine. Originally from Cleveland, OH, she completed her medical training in Baltimore, Chicago, and Philadelphia, then moved to Los Angeles where her favorite pastimes include hiking, dancing, and travelling.

I’ve been here several times now and couldn’t ask for more! The doctors are both nice, patient, and really seem like they care about you. The office staff is excellent. The phone and office visit wait times are very short. I have had asthma and allergies my whole life and I’ve seen many asthma specialists. They have helped me a great deal here! I would highly recommend!

Over the years I have developed allergies that I didn’t have before. Dr. Schoettler strategizes so well to address my changing conditions, works with me to address any concerns or questions. She can explain her philosophy so you understand any regimen you have to do at home. Dr. Marks is also so personable and was helpful in recommending good over-​the-​counter solutions for sunblock and itch control without hydrocortisone for my daughter’s sensitive and allergic skin. I haven’t gone to Dr. Buchsbaum but I’m sure he is great as well.
The El Segundo office is convenient for me, and less hectic than the Torrance one, in my opinion. It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and mornings of Fridays, but I have had no problems scheduling appointments or allergy shots with this schedule. The staff in El Segundo has generally been very professional in my experience. Even when it’s not always the same person at the desk, all have been great. Personally I did have a lot of questions for Billing when I first started, and I think they have been sorted out. I have to say that I am very happy overall with the level of care and service, especially in the El Segundo office, where I have been going the last couple of years.

Lucky me! I met with Dr Marks today and absolutely loved her. She’s extremely knowledgable, friendly and solution oriented. I appreciate her empathy! I highly recommend her and the office. Clean, efficient and parking is easy!
She’s only in MB on Mondays with the occasional fill in (like today) but the good news is that she holds hours in Torrance as well.

Dr. Schoettler was great to work with! South Bay Allergy and Asthma was referred to me by a friend and I am glad I took her advice. Recently I’ve been experiencing allergic reactions when I eat certain foods, this is new to me as I have never had allergies growing up. I was able to secure an appt almost immediately and they have two convenient locations in the south bay! I came to their El Segundo offices which is located a block from my building and was able to be seen right away. Initially the nurse came in and gathered some background on my allergies and Dr. S was in within a few minutes. This was the first time we had met so she took her time to really get to know my routine and diet. Based on what I eat and the environment around me she did a scratch test. The nurse came in to check on me a few times while I waited. Dr. S did her best to eliminate any unneeded tests to save me some $ which was great! I learned a lot and she left me with some informative knowledge on how to avoid these reactions. I really like the staff! Definitely check them out!

On a scale from 1 – 10, Dr. Johnson is a 10! She is a doctor who cares for the welfare of her patients. She treats the «Whole» patient. Although I am currently receiving services for my allergies, she asks about my visits to my Internist, my ENT, and my visits with my Neurologists for my migraines. Dr. Johnson reviews my records, my lab work, and makes plans for our next course of action. It is a pleasure to be a patient
of Dr. Johnson.
I must also mention my favorite medical assistant Rosie! I see Rosie on a regular basis. She has been giving me injections for years. I’m not fond of needles or shots, but it seems Rosie has the magic touch. The injections are so precise, so perfect I hardly feel it. Rosie always has a friendly and caring demeanor, and it is always a pleasure to see her. Rosie is definitely an asset to the Allergy and Associates family.
