Karatedo Shinyokai

My son just did the summercamp and loved it. He usually has a hard time with new social situations so i wasn, t sure how this would work out for him since he didn, t know anyone at camp but he loved it. he, d come home every day so enthusiastic about what he has learned and the kids he, d met and of course Sensei Mark. we had tried different sports and activities and i think my son has finally found his spot. He can, t wait to start training at the dojo.

My 6 year old son takes classes from Sensei Mark and loves it. He looks forward to every class and the atmosphere is great for boys and girls of all ages. Sensei Mark is fun, patient and informative and offers his students more than just self defense, but a positive way for the kids to carry themselves in all aspects of their lives. The older or more experienced kids help out the younger, newer students in a very postive caring manner that is very impressive; and fosters a environment that stresses students supporting each other and improving ones technique by also being a good teacher to one another.
My son has shown an increase in discipline, self control and confidence. My wife and I are very pleased and highly recommend Karatedo Shiyokai.

Full disclosure: I basically will love anything more if it’s outside.
That being said, I love Sensei Mark’s classes, even when they are indoors. I really appreciate Sensei Mark’s focus on technique and skill-​building. Being out on the grass adds in that extra challenge to stay in touch with your environment while also staying balanced and focused.
Sensei Mark does an incredible job of keeping everyone moving at an appropriately challenging pace for a variety of skill levels (an admirable feat for any/​all teachers). He is an extremely encouraging, attentive, knowledgeable, and fun instructor. I look forward to each class.
Oh! And weekend classes on the beach! What’s not to love?!?

I love my karate classes w/​Sensei Mark! I am new to karate (and martial arts for that matter) and have been practicing w/​BKD for 7 months now. It is now a much needed part of my routine and it greatly influences my overall well being each week.
Since I began training I have gained physical confidence and awareness thanks to Sensei Mark’s astute observations and personalized direction. My skill level has also significantly improved and I have advanced from basic one person movements to more complex combinations, kata training, and paired practice.
Sensei Mark sets the pace of the class in a way that creates a challenging experience for each student while still maintaining an energetic and organized group experience for everyone together. He meets you where you are, is very patient at every skill level and helps you to find your own unique path of improvement, challenging you at just the right moment. Each class has been engaging and has brought something new to be excited about.
I am thrilled that Sensei Mark has decided to hold his classes outside when weather permits (which is most of the time here in the Bay area :). Most recently we enjoyed class at the beach– sometimes even getting our feet or knees wet. This adds to the overall energy of the class and makes you feel connected to the natural environment in a way that would be impossible in an indoor setting. It’s very special. As someone who prefers to exercise outdoors this is perfect!
Another thing that I feel is important to mention is how much value you get. The classes are inexpensive compared to other karate/​exercise options out there AND Sensei Mark offers a one time free first class. For that you get personalized training, a great atmosphere, and more energy when you leave than you came with. If you found this group and are interested in beginning or continuing your own training there really is no reason not to give it a try :)
