Specialties
«We do things the old fashioned way…». Well, we do! We find the world’s finest coffee beans, and roast them in small batches til they’re just right. Our shops keep 8 varieties brewed all day long. You’ve also got lots more choices if you want to have one of our fabulous espresso-based drinks. Cappuccino, latte, café au lait, macchiato, luscious mocha latte… or maybe you’ll venture into our flavored espresso blenders like Vanilla Bean or Dark Belgian Truffle. Ever had a truly authentic, absolutely sumptuous cup of Chai? Try ours — it’s made from scratch like they do in India. Do you like your juice fresh squeezed? Have a glass of our orange juice or lemonade.
And then there are our pastries! Our faithful bakers turn out loads of the freshest, most deliciously old fashioned treats you can imagine – scones, muffins, donuts, croissants, coffeecakes, turnovers, apple puffs, rich chocolate-y bars — and about 50 other totally yummy creations. Plus we make our own granola and cream cheese!
History
Established in 1990.
Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters was born out of a love of coffee: of great tasting coffee in all its varieties & manifestations, and all the ways & places in which coffee is enjoyed., Founders Kathy Lytle and Curtis Rich set out over 20 years ago to bring the joy of artisan coffee to their community. With a wing & a prayer and a very small budget, Kathy & Curtis bought a nice little espresso machine, a grinder and some coffee, and began playing.
They sold their first beverage on the ferry dock of Peaks Island, Main. From there, they packed their equipment (and daughter Annabelle, now our GM) into a van & a trailer and set off to fairs along the east coast. After a year of on the road, Kathy & Curtis decided to open a shop in one of the tiniest café spaces the world has ever known in the village of Shelburne Falls.
From there, new locations started to cry out to house an SFCR shop and so they were born in Northampton, Easthampton, Hadley, Greenfield and East Longmeadow.
Meet the Manager
Annie L.
Manager
Our general manager, Annabelle Lytle-Rich, literally grew up with Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters. At 2 ½ years old, Annie was right there when her parents sold SFCR’s first coffee drink. She traveled with Kathy & Curtis as they developed their fledgling business at fairs & festivals up and down the east coast. She worked in our shops as a teenager, enthusiastically handling the busiest shifts and learning our operations inside out.
During her college years, she did an internship as a market analyst for a coffee company in New York City. The internship turned into a regular staff position, which she continued until her move to New Orleans after finishing college. She served a multi-year stint with the Teach For America program, picking up invaluable management and team communications skills in the process.
In 2013, Annie returned to SFCR to take the reins of the business she’d grown up with, and has served as our GM since then. She now oversees all of our retail operations.
