This is a great place to stop, if you’re craving Jamaican food. The curry chicken is always good, as are their beef patties. This place is a storefront in a strip mall. They have 5 – 6 tables. Not much décor, but nice Caribbean food. Worth a stop if you’ve got a craving!

Spicy beef patty in coco bread, washed down with a bottle of Ting! Doesn’t get much better than that!!! The patty was large, flaky and flavorful while the coco bread was warm, fresh and the sweetness helped tame the spiciness! The prices for the plates seem high for a combo, though.

I work very close to the Golden Krust, so I recently decided to go there for lunch one day. I had never tried Caribbean food before, so I was really looking forward to trying it for the first time. Golden Krust has a variety of meats to choose from including chicken, goat and oxtail. Since this was my first time here I went with the jerk chicken plate. It also included rice and plaintains and was a generous portion. I really liked the flavor of the jerk chicken. They actually served the sauce on the side for you to dip the chicken in, the chicken itself to me was a little bit dry. They gave you three options for which type of rice you wanted with your chicken. I sort of wish I had ordered the red beans and rice, but I found my rice to be okay. I did enjoy the two fried plantains that came with the meal. Overall I found the food to be good, but not outstanding. For the price(a little over $ 10 after tax), I am not sure I would go out of my way to come back here, but if I was looking for a quick lunch choice, I might be willing to try it out again.

I was craving Jamaican style oxtail and drove what felt like a very long time here from South Durham. It was definitely worth it. I got the small oxtail plate, it wasn’t really small, but it was really good and oxtails don’t have a lot of meat so if you’re wanting that extra protein the large might be the way to go. The soup of the day was oxtail soup, so i got some of that to go. It was a hearty Caribbean style soup that I also enjoyed. I’ve always only known Golden Krust for their beef patties, but the meal was a pleasant different side.

This place lacks something to be desired. Oh yea, seasoning. Having had authentic West Indian food my entire life, it’s quite obvious they don’t take time to season the meat and let it «marinate.» Then they overcompensate by dumping a ton of salt. Still it’s not inedible, just disappointing. I go there when I’m really craving oxtail that I can’t get anywhere else.

The spicy beef Jamaican patties are excellent! Love the Jerk Chicken and our child enjoys the flavorful, nonspicy, stewed chicken. Highly recommend this place.

Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery has some good food. On the menu are jerk chicken, curried goat, oxtail stew, curry chicken, jerk chicken wrap, spanish wrap, beef patty, shrimp patty and more. The sides are fried plantains, cabbage, yellow rice and peas or red beans & rice or just plain white rice. They serve Pepsi products here. Several deserts are available to enjoy such as rum cake, carrot cake, and more. On my most recent visit here I enjoyed the Jerk Chicken plate with red beans & rice with cabbage and 2 fried plantains for $ 8.99 plus tax. It was very good. I have also had the curried goat here and it is very good, but which out for the bones. Food B Staff B Décor C Location C(plenty of parking in this strip mall) Health Inspection Grade 99.5

Still delicious. Prices went up a bit so now it’s just under $ 12 for a small box(meat main, rice, small side of cabbage, and a few plantains). It’s definitely still take-out mostly. They don’t always have the goat curry so I usually call first to check.

Went for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. There were a few other customers and one recommended the brown stew chicken which reminded him of meals back home in NY. I prefer the jerk chicken so I got the dinner combo. The chicken pieces were a decent size and were sufficiently cooked but I didn’t find them to be very spicy and I must say that I can’t tolerate really spicy foods. The rice and beans were mushy and the cabbage/veggie mix was bland. Fortunately I got the curry chicken sauce on my rice which punchd up the flavor. My partner got the curry chicken and enjoyed it but he agreed about the cabbage and the rice. The service was quick and the servers were polite. The décor was fresh, lively-colored and clean. This is a small reStaurant in a strip mall . I love jerk chicken and this place is all right but I would only return if I were in the area and hungry. There are better Caribbean places around that are comparably priced and have more flavorful food.

Originally from New York and having parents from Antigua and Montserrat, I know of the Golden Krust Franchise. I never knew there was one here in North Carolina! Moving to Durham, I’ve been looking high and low for something Caribbean and Unilocal led me right here! There’s no need for a review nor any questions. I’ll love this place no matter where I go!

Not the best Jamaican food I’ve had. The jerk chicken was pretty dry. Spicy, but dry. The peas and rice were dry as well, though they had a good flavor. Cabbage was essentially flavorless. In my opinion it’s alright if you’re just really craving some Jamaican, but if you’re looking for a true stewed style jerk chicken with lots of spice and flavor you aren’t going to get it here. But I’d say it’s decent for a chain spot.

Really great Jamaican food from this chain restaurant. I usually order the dinner portions of the brown stew chicken or curried goat. You get so much food that it can make three meals. In addition to the protein, it comes with a choice between two rice sides(I always order the chick and pea rice), fried plaintains, and a braised cabbage side. My only caution would be as the meat is cooked falling off the bones, eat carefully and slowly. Service is quick for takeout. The dine-in area is never busy(most folks order take out) and very clean.

I came here earlier today for lunch with some coworkers and was pleasantly surprised. After going though the menu, I instantly knew I was getting the goat curry. Until I read some of the reviews after I came here, I realized that this was apparently a favorite amongst the Unilocalers. The goat curry was awesome. Super tender and I was able to simply suck it off the bone. I also had to get a jerk patty. I love Caribbean patties so I had to try one. They were out of spicy beef, which made my decision easy because I was torn between jerk and beef. The jerk chicken patty was delicious as well. Be careful though, they are HOT. I am definitely coming back here, to try the other patties and perhaps the other dishes as well, I just don’t know if I can not do goat curry, I guess we shall see. Cheers.

The best franchised Caribbean restaurant I’ve found. The best thing I’ve had so far is the oxtails. I love the gelatinous, richness of the meat and the sauce/gravy is incredible. When ordering a combo, they let you choose your rice, you get plaintains and cabbage as well. The patties are yummmm! I’ve had the curry chicken, jerk chicken, chee-zee beef, mild and spicy beef. I loved them all but my favorite was the curry chicken. Tip: If you order any of the meat dishes beware of bones(big & small). I personally love that they stew the meat with the bones. It gives it a more rustic, home style feel.

Haven’t had Caribbean food this good since actually visiting the islands. Opted for a «small» plate of the goat curry, which comes with 3 plantains, cooked cabbage, and your choice of rice(pro tip: if you’re like me, and love trying a little of everything, they’ll even split the portion amongst the rice choices), and doesn’t feel all that small! Everything is scooped up from chafing dishes for you near the register. I love jerk chicken, and really wanted to get it via the patty; but they were out of the jerk chicken and veggie patties at the time, with the next batch not expected to finish for 20 minutes. Instead, I got a patty each of what was available — spicy beef and curry chicken. The patties are akin to savory pop-tarts… a flaky crust with an oozing filling. A little disconcerting, perhaps, to have meat«ooze» — but the spice is so good, I almost didn’t notice. The goat curry, as others have said, is fantastic. Hints of nutmeg with cumin and coriander. Also loved the plantains — but wish there had been more! Golden Krust’s bakery case didn’t have anything too tempting in it though(think: fruit cakes, breads, and sugar buns). But that’s okay, because I’m happy to expend my calories on more of that curry!

Standard Golden crust fare, deliciously satisfying. The oxtail was great as usual! And an added bonus: For all the other Trinis out there or people wanting some Trinidad and Tobago food, they have roti there! Real Trinidad roti, with freshly made dhalphuri roti skins. I got a curry goat roti and it came with channa, potato and pumpkin. Seasoned real nice. I will be frequenting here from now on– this must be the only place in 100 miles where you can find authentic Trini roti.(The chef is from Arima, Trinidad and was very friendly.) Excellent!

I got the curry chicken which came w/rice, cabbage, and 2 plantains. It was flavorful, and the meat literally fell off the bone. Nom nom My friend got oxtail, which was alright, but not worth the price. We split a beef patty, which was tasty enough, but nothing spectacular, just mildly spiced ground beef in a yellow crusty pastry. The ambiance is more of a sparse, hole in the wall, fast food place. But everything looked clean, and that’s really all I ask. I’d definitely go back for the curry chicken!

This is a hidden gem in a shabby part of Durham. So far, I have tried goat curry, oxtail, and chicken curry. Food comes with side rice, vegetables(mainly steamed cabbage), and two plantain pieces. did not like oxtail(too expensive ~11 $ and too fatty), but loved goat(~$ 9) and chicken curry(~$ 8). Note 1: Be careful of small bones in the curry. Note 2: Food comes in small and large portions. I have a healthy appetite, and the small portion is quite ample for me. Update: I tried the jerk wings which was unremarkable and stew chicken which was tasteless. Ergo, the chicken and goat curries are the only items that I will get from this place in the future. Update: I took a friend there and he hated the food. I am still fine with it but I took away one star from it.

«Inexpensive but tasty Caribbean food and patties» This chain store is nestled in a little strip mall with Roses. I came twice– once for lunch with some Duke Unilocalers and once for dinner with my family. The restaurant is bright and playing fairly loud music(though comfortable). Prices are posted visibly, and most of the food is right there in front of you as you’re ordering. For lunch, I got three of their«patties” — basically like empanadas or English«Cornish pasties». They come in a variety of flavors, so I tried the spicy beef, jerk chicken, and vegetable. Surprisingly, the veggie one was, hands-down, my favorite– very spicy, and full of great tasting veggies. The meat ones taste good, but they have a sort of soup-like texture– almost like the meat was run through a blender for a long time. I also tried the coco bread– it was«just OK.» The patties range in price right around $ 2, so they’re a good value. For dinner, I had the goat curry meal– the goat was AWESOME. Melt-in-your-mouth good, though watch out for lots of small bones. The large goat curry meal cost $ 10, and it came with the meat, rice(I had yummy spinach rice), vegetables(good but a little oily/buttery), and fried sweet plantains. It’s a huge meal, and really good. My family also got the plantains, and although they usually love eating that, they said these had a funny after-taste/texture(I didn’t notice, but I only had 3 pieces). My daughter also wasn’t crazy about her patties– she said the spinach one tasted like canned spinach, and the chicken one was too soupy(few«chunks»). They had traditional Caribbean dishes available, too, like callaloo, ackee, etc. I wanted to try the Jamaican«festival», but they didn’t have it either time, unfortunately, despite it being on the menu. Service was friendly– you order at the counter, and they dish out for you– almost cafeteria-style. Overall, A-OK. Good place to try. Since my family wasn’t crazy about it, I’m not sure it was quite good enough to enter our regular«rotation», but I certainly enjoyed my food both times(especially that goat curry). For a more authentic edge, I prefer Caribbean Paradise( ), though.
