Robert L.

Business Owner

Robert Long is a Logan, West Virginia native and a third generation mover who relocated to Durham, North Carolina in 1962. His grandfather opened DeHaven’s Transfer & Storage in 1951. This allowed Robert the opportunity to learn about every aspect of the moving business. His career began to flourish 32 years ago as he made a name for himself by becoming the youngest recipient of the prestigious northAmerican Vanguard Driver Award for his proven commitment to excellence in moving offices and laboratories.

In 1985, Robert became Vice President of operations for commercial relocations and later became the President of De Haven’s Transfer and Storage, Inc. in 1995. He is now the owner and President of six Dehaven’s Transfer & Storage locations throughout the Carolinas.

Robert is a proud father and a devoted husband who has a passion for sports. He is an active member of Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina and does his part to make a difference in the community through his participati

If I was able to give negative stars I would. I spoke with woman at their office named Rebecca. This woman was very rude, unprofessional and I believe she was under the influence of some substance. She did not make any sense and slurred her words. Well I needed mover as I had to move out of state quickly for a new job. The movers that came were very nice, polite and professional. This was a relief considering the treatment I received from the office staff. I felt bad for these movers as I overheard them say that they had no money to pay their rent or buy groceries. I gave them a large cash tip. Apparently this employer does not pay their employees. They will spend weeks without pay when they should be paid on a weekly basis. My heart went out for these movers who were superior in their class. It is a shame that a company such as this one is in existence. They treat their employees poorly just as their customers.

I’m kind of chuckling as I read the other reviews, as our situation sounds pretty similar. However, I think our experience was only slightly better than the other reviewers, but only because most of our belongings arrived in one piece. (There were some damaged items, but most were rips, tears, and scratches that we chose not to claim.)
At first, our moving coordinator was professional, but pretty soon it was clear that she wasn’t very experienced. In calculating our estimate, she put in an entirely different destination city in our province. She was not great at returning our calls and emails in a timely fashion. I think her estimate on the number of boxes needed was too low. And later on, she practically was impossible to get a hold of.
However, the worst part was the packing job. If I can summarize:
a) They did not show up with an adequate amount of «extra» boxes,
b) A packing injury put 2 of the 3 packers out of commission most of the afternoon (the 2nd one had to drive her to/​from the clinic),
c) They did not finish the job
d) Injured packer used our bed as a flat surface and shredded our comforter with a knife
The movers weren’t much better. They were supposed to finish the last-​minute packing, after I complained. but I ended up doing most of it. They also put a dent in my wall moving my bedroom furniture. The makeshift way they went about «fixing» it was so ridiculously shady.
I should also note, the movers were scratching their heads with the way the packers numbered and labelled the boxes — they told me it wasn’t done properly.
In our new city, the receiving company lost one page of our paperwork… which was just dandy for Customs. I am actually shocked that all of our boxes arrived. At this point, with some minor damage to our items, submitting a claim just isn’t worth the hassle of having to deal with this company again.

I would give them zero stars if it were a choice. By far, one if the most frustrating and awful moving experiences we have ever had. The packing was not done properly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to our belongings. Phone calls were not returned by our «moving coordinator.» Our movers did not show up until almost 1 pm on the load date, and had to work until midnight to finish loading. They did not arrive at our destination until nearly two weeks after moving us — four days over the last projected date on the contract. When he vented our frustration to them, they responded with a complete lack of empathy, and really could have cared less.

It’s now November, 6 months after my move and my damaged furniture is finally getting fixed. The first repair guy never showed up and didn’t even call. Was told by DeHaven’s that there was a change and they can’t find me on their schedule. After roughly a month they contacted someone else and told me they were sorry and want to take care of this as soon as possible. The repair person came out right away. He gave DeHaven’s a quote and was going to take care of everything as soon as DeHaven’s gave him the OK. Well… they ignored him for several days. I had to call them again and was told that someone else now handles the damages from another office. I called him and he didn’t have any record of my damages. The new guy listened to me and gave the repair company the OK to proceed once he got the OK from the owner of the company. Do yourself a favor. stay away from this company unless you like problems.

We have been professionally moved 6 times, and Dehaven’s is the worst moving company that we have ever experienced. The lack of professionalism was really appalling.
To give you a quick summary, our experience was the following:
— After setting a move date, we did not hear from our account rep (Lisa S) for a week prior to our moving date. We finally found out less then 24hrs before the scheduled date, that she had not officially booked the move. (she was apparently sick for several days).
— That started a series of changing dates for packing and moving. In fact, one day Lisa called 4 times to change the packing date. The last call was that they would come the next day.
— The quality of the packing was awful. We opened a box that looked liked it had been packed by our 6 year old. Items were just tossed into the empty box without any wrapping. Other items were placed into boxes that were too small, so they were permanently deformed. A large glass table, was wrapped in cardboard (it has previously been crated by every other moving company).
— The handling of our items was also awful. Every piece of furniture had some form of damage or chipping.
— Finally, they lost some of our items in their warehouse. I called to inquiry were a rug, and multiple boxes had gone. Their response was — «we were wondering who’s items those were.»
I could not recommend this company to anyone in good conscious. North America also bares some responsibility since it was their driver and truck that handled and hauled our furniture, but the problem and lack of professionalism started with Dehaven’s (in particular — Lisa S.)

DeHaven’s = TOTAL INCOMPETENCE & LOTS OF BROKEN BELONGINGS. This could not have been any worse than what we experienced. The driver was a complete con and left our home a complete disaster. I have so many broken items that I am now on my second claim and am hoping I won’t have to do another. They are non-​responsive, irresponsible and unethical. They do not follow up on anything they promise and their management will not stand behind their service. AVOID THESE JERKS AT ALL COST!!!

Worst moving experience of my life.
My customer service rep, if you can call him that, was inept and incapable of following through on his word. He made excuses for his lack of follow through and lied about changing my move delivery window, requiring me to reschedule a trip at personal expense. He never responded to email and never gave me boxes. The company planners were no better. I had to call and ask about a dozen times when my move was happening — when they said they would call me back they never did.
Then the move took place and the movers broke a family heirloom dresser. A month later, I still have not been able to get anyone at North American (DeHavens parent company) to follow up. Huge waste of money — should have moved myself.
STAY AWAY if you want to keep your sanity.
