Specialties

Built in 1887, the historic Strater Hotel (Historic Hotels of America Member) is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and one hour east of Mesa Verde National Park. Cleveland pharmacist Henry Strater believed Durango would thrive and therefore need a grand hotel. He opened the Strater Hotel with a $ 70,000 investment and 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. It became a popular winter retreat for people who would close their homes during the winter months and move into the hotel. The Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Walnut Antiques, which decorate it and its 93 guestrooms, including its Louis L’Amour Room – Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering & Events, and The Office Spiritorium.

History

Established in 1887.

At a time when Durango’s future still hung in the balance-would it remain a mining camp or become a metropolis? A Cleveland pharmacist named Henry Strater had the vision and the faith that Durango would prosper, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. Construction was quite a challenge, but with the help of his brothers Fred and Frank his Father Antone, and a lot of enthusiasm, Henry’s dream was realized. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $ 70,000, and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills.

The hotel’s renovation and Antique collection has continued since 1983 under the direction and design of current President, Roderick E. Barker, son of Earl and Jentra. Rod has overseen installation of fine woodwork and beautiful hand-printed Bradbury and Bradbury wallpapers, and a configuration suiting the Victorian Period. Windowed showcases brimming with antique collectibles are located throughout the public areas.

Meet the Business Owner

Rod B.

Business Owner

Earl A. Barker Sr. launched what was to become a family legacy by purchasing the Strater in 1926. He guided the company for 28 years before handing the reins to his son, Earl Jr., in 1954. Earl Jr. and his wife Jentra carried the torchproudly, initiating an aggressive revitalization of the hotel, including a nationwide search for American Victorian walnut antiques. They also added contemporary conveniences to update services. Earl Jr. managed the property for 30 years until the mid-1980s when The Strater’s current driving force, president and CEO Rod Barker assumed the leadership of the hotel.

Rod and his wife Laurie continue the family’s commitment to renovation and state-of-the-art services, proud stewards of a property that grows more charming each year through their thoughtful care.
