Gardenswartz Sporting Goods is Durango’s oldest outfitter for hunting and fishing. We are located on the eight-hundred block between Eighth and Ninth Street on Main Avenue, next to the Main Mall, in the heart of downtown Durango. We also carry technical clothing, footwear, and camping gear.
History
Established in 1928.
Sam and Lester Gardenswartz opened Gardenswartz Sporting Goods in 1928 in Durango where the Main Mall stands today. In 1974, a fire took half the 800 block, including the store, at which point Sporting Goods relocated to 863 Main Ave, just a few storefronts down. The store stayed in the Gardenswartz Family until 1979. The current owner, Richard Ellis, purchased the store in 1988, and opened Gardenswartz Outdoors in 1996, on the corner of Eighth St. and Main Ave.
