The Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC), a nonprofit environmental education organization, is dedicated to educating children and adults in the New York metropolitan area, protecting and preserving Alley Pond Park, open spaces and waterbodies, and advocating for sustainable environmental policies and practices.
History
Established in 1976.
In the early seventies, a small group of forward-thinking elementary school teachers, convinced that Earth’s ecology should be a vital part of children’s education, formed a committee to persuade school authorities to add the subject to the curriculum. Unable to change public school policies and spurred on by their convictions, they turned to the NYC Dept of Parks & Recreation for help in finding a site where a center for environmental education could be created. In 1976 they won the right to use the site of a former furniture store concession on a parcel of parkland fronting Northern Boulevard. The acres and acres of precious wetlands that lay behind the store were in horrific condition, subjected to a constant bombardment of discarded debris and in desperate need of preservation. The efforts of the Committee’s commitment to make the Center operational, with much volunteer help provided by community activists, was rewarded in 1979 with a National Environmental Study Area designation.
