JaysFades Hair and Nail Salon is a barber shop in Detroit, a hair salon, and a Detroit nail salon. Both men and women are welcome, and we love to make children look good, too.

In fact, JaysFades Hair and Nail Salon is more than a salon. It’s a movement to make the City of Detroit better! You can call JaysFades a community engagement center. We connect the different parts of the community through diverse events that require members to build relationships through interactive activities. Mission: Promote peace, unity, love, and community awareness, and to create communication and interaction among members of our community.

History

Established in 2005.

The owner, Harlan «Jay» Bivens started cutting hair at an early age. His father was a barber, too, but often he was so tired and had so many children, he did not always have time to cut Jay’s hair. Eventually, he told Jay to «cut it (himself).»

So Jay did. Then he started cutting hair for his brothers and sisters. Then he started doing it for his friends and other family members.

Eventually people started seeing people who sported his good haircuts and asked, «Where did you get your hair done?»

Slowly, Jay’s clients grew, and he eventually opened up his own shop on Livernois, by University of Detroit, between the University District and Bagley neighborhoods in 48 221.

Today, he combines his love for making people look good with helping the community become stronger and often hosts neighborhood events at his barber shop in Detroit.

One of his main community efforts goes toward his non-​profit organization, the Better Detroit Youth Movement.

Business Owner

Harlan «Jay» Bivens is not simply any ordinary barber; he is a community activist in every aspect of his life. He owns and founded JaysFades Hair and Nail Salon, a Detroit barber shop in 48 221, and co-​directs the Better Detroit Youth Movement non-​profit organization. He makes people in the community have good looking hair while providing the community with care.

As a mentor and motivational speaker, not to mention an actor and model, Jay has created and follows a lifelong commitment toward seeking ways to create opportunities for people in the community, especially children and young adults in Detroit.
