Argyll GastroPub

my husband and i got married on a saturday, and went to the argyll with our families for brunch on sunday morning. i had called a few weekss in advance since we had 24 people. they were very friendly and pleasant.
we were seated quickly and our waitress was great, i forgot her name though.
they always kept our glasses full (yummy mango mimosas), and the food was so good. i got the Pot Pie and Biscuits: Roasted Chicken, Bechamel, Carrots, Parsnips, Potatoes, Homemade Biscuits, Poached Eggs, Hash $ 13
it was SO yummy… definitely rich, but you want something you don’t make at home and it was awesome. the eggs were perfect.

I purchased a gift certificate ($ 25 for $ 50 kind of thing) for Argyll, and I was very excited to try a Scottish-​style pub (seeing as how my husband is of Scottish heritage). We went during a weeknight, and there were not too many people in there, but it was also rainy so I won’t judge them on that.
We ordered a charcuterie plate for the 3 of us, which was tasty if not a bit on the stingy side. Then we each ordered an entrée. While everything was delicious, the entrees were disappointingly small. My friend’s entrée was so tiny, I think the veggie accompaniment consisted of something like 3 baby carrots and a pearl onion. In order to not be hungry still at the end of the meal, she ordered a side of sauteed veggies (which actually didn’t exist on the menu, they just kind of whipped something up), which basically ended up being veggies dripping in butter. I don’t mind small entrees, when you know that sides cost extra, but this was disappointing.
All in all, this experience was okay… everything was pretty tasty, but the portions were small and I didn’t feel like the size was warranted in this atmosphere. They call themselves a pub, but it seemed like they wanted to be something fancier than that. Typical case of identity crisis I guess. Unless the overall reviews improve, I likely will not return.

I met a friend here for drinks and dinner. It was a rainy Monday and the place was a ghost town. Still, the bartender was freindly and chatty and our waitress (we decided to get a table after a bit) was a delight.
I loved the basement pub feel. OK, it is more Scottish décor than authentic Scottish pub, but who cares. Dark woods and red booths makes the space seem warm and cozy.
The homade chips that come out before the meal are crispy little coins with a drizzle of bbq sauce. I loved them as opposed to the traditional bread basket, at most places. I had the Argyll burger (a blend of beef/​lamb). It was really a great tasting patty and it was so juicy I needed an extra napkin! Fries tasted fresh cut, but otherwise unremarkable. Somehow we totally forgot to get the mac and cheese — duh, but several people who came in after us were raving about it.
I would be back. I was a friendly vibe with excellent food!

We went here after getting the lunch deal from Groupon or LivingSocial (can’t remember which). Anyhow, my wife got their evil Mac and Cheese, a must have. I can’t even describe how good it is. Full of cheese, mushrooms, bacon, and peas. I had the Argyll Burger which was equally as good. All the flavors on it went quite well together. We also split a Scotch Egg for an appetizer which was something neither of us had tasted prior to that. Deep fried and runny. What more could you need?
We’ll be back at some point.

Went last night for the first time. And, thankfully my fabulous friend had a gift card as the prices are a bit higher than my typical dinner place. That being said, the food was worth every penny! Between the two of us, we tried a variety so I feel completely comfortable giving 5 stars based on my first visit.
First off, the service was excellent! Our server, Molly, was delightful and knowledgeable. Since it was our first time, she was extremely helpful with recommendations on what was the best and what was just ok. I think we ended up being there for 4 hours (fun Saturday night catching up) and she was attentive the whole time and never implied in any way that we had overstayed our welcome (be honest, you’ve eaten in restaurants where that has happened!). The owner also came over to chat with us and it is clear that he is passionate about and proud of his restaurant.
Our selections for the evening: bottle of Malbec, glasses of 20 year port, the homemade chips with malt vinegar, selection of meats and cheeses (duck prosciutto, lamb cripenette, chicken pâté, manchego, d’argental, and andalucia), crab and corn fritters, wild boar, Argyll burger with a side of mac and cheese, and the toffee/​shortbread desert.
The food highlights:
The d’argental cheese was fantastic. It’s similar to brie, but was a tiny bit saltier and super creamy. It was particularly yummy combined with the duck prosciutto on the little baguette slices

The lamb cripenette. Round sausage patty that had a Lebanese flavor to it. Molly recommended and it was good!
I had the Argyll burger based on previous Unilocal reviews and for a burger it was extremely tasty. I substituted mac and cheese (for a slight upcharge) for the fries. It too was tasty, but VERY rich, so I would definitely advise just getting a side order, not the full entrée.
All of the above were fantastic and I’d go back for any of them, but the shining star of the night was the wild boar! Molly strongly recommended it and my friend was adventurous enough to get it (and nice enough to share with me). It is out of this world good! GO HERE AND GET IT! I will definitely be back and I will be getting the boar.
All around it was a lovely evening — service, food, and company. Just don’t try to do Argyll on the cheap side because you will miss out on the full experience. It’s well worth the splurge.

Every plate we had was bad.
Imagine the glorious bland English food. Then upgrade the quality from horrid to dismal. I had the «pot pie» and I say that in quotes because it tasted and looked like something my dog threw up. Also my wife and kid love cheese and Mac and cheese. Theirs is so rich you can’t have more than 5 bites before you literally start to get sick.

I give 5 stars if I can answer the following question: «Will you be going back for more?»
My answer for Argyll Gastropub: «Yes, yes and a thousand times yes!»
The place is a little on the pricier side, but so worth it.
We first started out with the chips + vinegar drizzle. So good that we had to ask for a second basket. For our appetizer, we went with the Salt Cod Fillets — crispy on outside, delicious on inside.
For entrees: Roasted chicken (½ roasted chicken, bread pudding, some kind of carrot purée), Salmon sandwich (deliciously buttery bun, salmon, tomato/​lettuce/​veggies, some kind of mustard + couscous), and Argyll burger (lamb/​beef burger with fries). Portions are generous and we were all stuffed.
But come what may, we looked through the dessert menu and our eyes landed on Baked Alaska. We HAD to have it once we saw ‘fire’ in the list of ingredients. It is a cake + chocolate chili ice cream on top, all coated with a layer of marshmallow cream that they set to fire at the table.
So regretful as I stood on my scale today and saw I had upped another 2 lbs. AH!
But so so so delicious.

The husband and I went here for brunch yesterday and it was great. First off, the house made scones they give you upon sitting down are way too small. They are so yummy. I could have eaten many, many more.
We both ordered bloody mary’s (mine extra spicy) and the server (she was great) even returned to make sure it was spicy enough (it wasn’t). So she brought me over a condiment bowl of fresh horseradish. That did the trick! It was great after I doctored it a bit more.
I had the Duck Egg Breakfast. The egg is bigger than a normal egg and was so delicious and creamy. The bacon is tasty! The potatoes/​parsnips/​hash that is served on the side is pretty good. Nothing too special. The bread is also a bit flimsy and tasteless.
John had the corned beef hash and really enjoyed it. I of course had a couple bites and agreed!
All in all, it was a tasty meal and I left full. I would compare the food style to Colt & Gray which we visited for brunch last year and I’d definitely give Colt & Gray the edge. It might be more expensive though– the menu prices aren’t posted online so I can’t remember! The bloody mary is better at Argyll… which goes a long way with me… but not long enough!
We really enjoyed it here though and would come back to try the Scotch Egg and the Mac and Cheese I’ve ready so much about!

This is a serious four star experience. I love the term GastroPub. Some folks think of it as describing upscale pub food. Others think of it as a variation of New American cuisine. In either case you have come to the right place.
I stopped by on Saturday night with an Open Table reservation. My companion and I were seated just a bit early. Always a nice start!
The atmosphere is a little quirky and very dark. I thought about saying dim but changed my mind. It’s dark. Actually it’s my only complaint.
I ordered the burger with the house special topping. What is that you ask? Au Poivre style! If you have ever had steak au poivre you know what to expect. Peppercorns and a rich cognac sauce. This was definitely one of the best burgers I have ever experienced.
My companion had a grilled pork chop that she pronounced amazing.
Throughout the meal we had competent, friendly, timely service. We walked out with smiles on our faces vowing to return soon.

First let me say that if I could give a another half star I would. Four and half stars would be perfect for this GastroPub. I have to leave the Five Stars for the exceedingly exceptional.
I went there last night with my Father who suggested this restaurant after reviewing Unilocal and Open Table for reservations.
Being new to Denver I was surprised at the location (how fantastic) and I can’t wait to go back and walk around for the day.
As we entered we were greeted promptly and were sat right away even though we were 15 minutes early for our reservation. The place was warm and inviting and made me want to stay for hours.
After reviewing the wonderful menu, I came to realize I wish they had a tasting menu so I could experience more than one main dish. I ordered the Warm Frisee Salad for my Appetizer which was fantastic. It had warm salted pork and whiskey soaked apples with sunflower seeds. I didn’t leave anything on the plate. WOWZA!
My Dad had the Carrot Ginger Soup which smelled fantastic and he said was a show stopper with great flavor. He could taste the ginger and that is always important.
For an Entrée I had the Pork Chop with roasted potatoes and butternut squash, a maple pumpkin purée I wish I could take home in a jar and a Rosemary Demi-​Glaze. OMG — Amazing. The glaze was so yummy. The waited recommended Medium for the pork which was perfect, so juicy and tender, it melts in your mouth. Not too many potatoes to overwhelm the plate, just enough to give that contrast. The pork chop was definitely the star of the plate. Perfect grill marks to compliment the dish as well.
My Dad had the Pub Burger (Medium), Au Poivre Style (with peppercorns). When it came to the table it was gorgeous. Not too big, just big enough with a nice helping of peppercorns on top. He said it was truly great and I will probably give it a try on my next visit.
Oh — by the way the chips that come when you sit down are absolutely to die for. I could have had five baskets of those.
I definite go back to Pub. The service was great and very helpful. We were even asked at the end of our meal by who I can only assume was the Manager how the visit was, and I was speechless.
Go back, once, twice, three times… I could go back for a week and never have the same dishes because that’s how much I want to have the other dishes on the menu.
Go enjoy the best GastroPub in town. :)

Wow this place appears to be quite over-​hyped. I had a sampler of a variety of offerings: duck hash, argyll burger, some sausage with waffles and a berry sauce (weird!)
So for the summary. Food was mediocre. Everything was quite salty and greasy. Sausage was overcooked and greasy, the berry sauce with the waffles was too sweet. The duck hash was salty and bland at the same time (how does that happen?) The burger, which some claim as one of the top burgers in Denver, had too many things on it, and was also forgettable. The fries sucked. On the plus side I like the atmosphere and patio; maybe this would be a good place to drink a lot.

Seating: So hard to get patio seating, some was sectioned off for a wedding party, which I don’t believe utilize them. If we weren’t starvatious, then I think we could have stared down at table of two and get them to leave.
Food: Steak and grilled peaches was delicious. Perfect size of the filet, but there could have been an extra peach. I noticed that they were well known for the mac’n’cheese, so ordering a side portion is a must (And is better than ordering the full entrée. The side Mac’n’cheese was very rich and filling).
Service: Not sure what was going on, but the waiters all seemed confused as to which table to deliver plates at. This went on all evening.

Nice 4 star patio experience. Tasty cocktails… got the happy hour pitcher of some mixology magic that turned out to be just what we needed on a warm summer evening. ($ 28 bucks, but split between three not bad — and yummy enough we ended up with two!) We actually had great service (Brian) but all the staff seemed to be able to lend a hand. I think I’ve had a better Scotch egg — I like them when they come out hot, but these were tasty. Perhaps I’m just liking them cause I wanted to show off my new Colorsplash iphone app — and felt the need to snap a shot of those yellow yokes!
Bottom line if you are looking for a nice pub with beyond normal bar food… this is a great stop and nice patio.

I wandered into this place after enjoying the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Why do you ask? Because I was hungry and there was a bunch of dogs laying around the porch. How awesome is that! I’ll give any restaurant a bonus star just for allowing the man’s best friend to lounge around.
As for the food, it was pretty good. The Eggs Benedict was full of big, chunky pieces of meat. The holondase sause was a little bland, so it won’t be replacing Snooze any time soon. The service was great and didn’t even complain when I ordered brunch at 11:59 on a Sunday.
I’ll be back, dog included.

Came here for lunch today after reading the good reviews.
Looked over the menu and it was smaller than I thought. Not a whole lot of choices but I got the burger. It was good. Burger is a burger unless you really mess it up. My friend got the fish and chips, which was more the chips and sauces with not a lot of fish.
Pretty much your run of the mill place. Nothing I’d go back to in a rush.

I think I might give this place one more chance for dinner, but that’s all it gets. Just one.
I’ve actually only been here once, but it was for brunch so I can’t fully judge. The first time I became familar with their food was at the Taste of Colorado. I sampled fish and chips and while I can’t remember them, I do remember the ticket-​taker being extremely offputting and getting mad at me when I asked what comprised a scotch egg but didn’t order one.
Brunch started out pretty great. I picked it due to the promise of bottomless mimosas (we did find a bottom, every now and then). I ordered my stand-​by brunch: tomato avocado benedict. I went for the cheddar diijon hollandaise to be «crazy and different.»
It was kind of gross. Partly my fault, mixing things up, but if the hollandaise didn’t taste good mixed with the eggs, what does it taste good with? Even with regular hollandaise, I feel this would have been a very adequate dish. The eggs were very hard cooked as well. The boxties (potato cakes) that came alongside also had an odd taste… I descriped it as «horses» meaning kind of like hay/​barn smell. I’m no boxtie expert, but I’ve enjoyed them in the past and they seemed flatter and crispier. And less horsier.
That said, I can’t fully judge a place JUST by its brunch, but until I make it back two stars will stand. I probably won’t put Argyll into the brunch rotation.

Ok so I usually write positive reviews. However this is not going to be one of them. I picked this place because of all the great reviews. After the theater on Wednesday nigth I said to myt wo friends lets go to Arglyes. i was just going to have a salad as it was late and I was not so hungry. I ended up with the Salmon burger. I ate it and yet was not very happy with the flavor. Plus my hands smelled so fishy. I knew it would be like a Salmon burger which was fine with me.
One friend had the chicken and she did enjoy her meal and it was tasty and moist. My other friend had I beleive had Pot Roast which she did not like. The tastiest of all were the chips they bring before dinner. Maybe we went too late and thats why the service was just ok and the food was not very good.
I am so disappointed because I usually pick great places and my friends rely on me for just that.
I dont drink beer and I know they are known for that. All well there are tother places to try and you will hear from me again.

Revisit to Argyll yesterday. I’m sticking with the 3 stars.
We did explore the menu a bit more. Friend had the salmon and I had the short rib — plus a shared Scotch egg (you really have to have this). A couple of beers and an early dinner was $ 60+.
Overall consensus was that everything was A-​OK. Service was fine but really they need to dress up the help just a tad. Our waiter really looked like he’d just wandered in off the street.
Portions, especially the short rib, were pretty meager. I think one boneless rib on some gummy risotto for $ 18 is pretty pricy. The dessert options are totally uninspired as well and we took a pass.
Not the best new restaurant in Denver by a long shot. Sorry.

I’ve only been in one truly authentic «pub» in my life. It was in London, outside of the Tate museum, it was raining cats ‘n dogs and we were really hungry. The Morpath Arms served traditional English pub food, unfortunately this pub food was a little bland and greasy but the beer was great. From a culinary point-​of-​view it was not a very exciting experience (although we did find some great food in London) but it WAS raining really hard and they did have good beer.
When I first saw that Argyll GastroPub had gone into the spot where the Squealing Pig was I was not all that interested although had to believe that anything would be an improvement over that horrible, overpriced Pig place. Also, as I’ve written before, I have never been a fan of the Cherry Creek North subterranean structures with their below-​ground restaurants — they always seem dark and cold. The exception in my view was Chinook Tavern. So, it wasn’t until I read Jason Sheehan’s review in Westword (ah, how I already miss him) that I was interested in checking out Argyll. And boy and I’m glad we did.
My first impression when we walked in for a Saturday lunch was that they had somehow succeeded in creating an atmosphere that looked «pub-​like» but that was inviting, warm and well-​lit. The entire wall of windows along with the bright chandeliers, dark wood paneled walls with lots of scotch-​plaid everywhere, and a very traditional-​looking bar (with only one, small TV) all ad to the warm and cozy vibe.
Ann, our server was excellent. In taking her drink order (noticing that we were studying the wine/​beer list) she asked if we wanted to start with wine (instead of «what would you like to drink»). I don’t mind someone trying to up-​sell me as long as they’re good at it. We settled on pints of beer instead — this is a pub after all. Both beers were cold and filled to the brim (no foam). She told us that she would be back with our beers as well as a basket of scones to start. What, Unilocalers rave about these crisps that you serve to nosh on and you’re bring me scones? «No problem,» she said with a warm smile, «the crisps are great — I’ll be happy to bring them instead… I’ll just bring you the scones for dessert.» I loved this woman!
My husband ordered the pub burger (medium rare) which appeared to be cooked perfectly. He gave it the big thumbs up. Trying to decide between the Duck Confit Salad and the Organic Egg Sandwich, I asked Ann and she (without skipping a beat) told me to get the sandwich as it was one of the best things on the menu. I wasn’t disappointed. Irish buttered bread with grilled tomato and onion with smoked bacon topped with a fried egg — I was in grastro-​pub heaven, if there is one. The sweetness of the grilled onions along with the smokey bacon and the warm gooey egg… wow, this is a killer sandwich.
There’s only one problem with Argyll — I had lots of errands to run that afternoon and all I wanted to do was have a few more pints, another bowl of crisps and a nap. Oh and the scones (for dessert) were delicious.
I can’t wait to go back.
Oh, and they have an ongoing special. Murphy’s are ½ price on snow days :-)

I went back to Argyll last night with Dan W. and Demetrius A. for some drinks and dinner and I had a blast.
Sitting on the patio at Argyll and enjoying a nice scotch, chatting it up with awesome people and enjoy the crisps can’t be beat. The staff was freaking awesome and the ambience is rad.
The food here is what I WANTED english food to taste like when I went to the UK last year. It’s magical and delicious. I had a corned beef sandwich that was to die for.
Anyway, do yourself a favor and go here for dinner and gorge yourself on the gastrique crisps. You won’t regret it. I know Dan W. sure didn’t.
