A good no frills, neighborhood gym. Definitely low key and NOT a meat market.

I joined Lakewood Gym on a month to month basis, paying an extra 10 or 15 dollars a month from the longer term contracts so that I could quit whenever I wanted to. Lakewood Gym is pretty much just a second floor office space in a strip mall converted into the equivalent of a large home gym, and I could tell that I wouldn’t be staying forever. I just needed some time to find a better place to work out, and Lakewood Gym was just a few blocks from my house. All of the equipment is pretty old and it has none of the amenities most people expect in gyms these days. No racquetball, no pool, no spa, no sauna, no classes. I will say it is clean, and the locker room is cleaner than most places. But then, hardly anyone uses the locker rooms because of the lack of amenities cited. So when I finally decided to join the Landry Fitness Center down at Baylor, I notified Lakewood that I wanted to end my membership, please stop charging my card. 25 days later, I get an e-mail that says it’s «to confirm your membership has been cancelled. If you have been charged for Oct., you may use the gym until Oct. 31st…» Now, I notified them on September 13th, and they sat on my e-mail for 25 days so they could turn around on October 7th and, after charging my card for another month, send me this e-mail about«if you have been charged…», when they know that they just charged my card. I had quit 24 Hour Fitness when I joined Lakewood, and they had charged my card for that last month as well. But when I called the 800 number and explained that I had moved on, they actually refunded that recent charge and wished me well. No drama. No arguing. Just«sorry to see you go. Hope you’ll think of us in the future». So, it’s quite frustrating when you get more compassionate treatment from a nationwide corporate chain than you do from your neighborhood Mom & Pop joint Not a very friendly or a very neighborly place. I’ll be passing the word to friends and family to stay away. You should too.

This my 2nd review for Lakewood Gym. I rated it initially at 4 stars and now after a month or so there, rate it 5 stars. Basically, the Lakewood Gym is a clean, friendly, but no-nonsense place to improve health and strength at a good price. They’re also nice to do business with. I’m completely happy there.
