I highly recommend Dr. Abe’s establishment.
His staff — Yoko and Shizuka are friendly and accommodating.
Dr. Abe is a great guy and a wonderful optometrist. He’s fun to talk to and he definitely knows what he’s doing.
I come here once a year for my annual eye-​checkup. I’ve been lucky in that I still have ²⁰⁄₂₀ vision, so I can’t comment on the glasses /​contacts purchasing experience. But, the eye tests are clearly explained to me and executed efficiently. I’ve always had a good experience here.

Dr Abe is s highly knowledgeable practitioner in his field and highly attentive during examination. The staff are all very professional, friendly and polite. By far one of the best in South bay.

I took my son to see Dr. Abe after our experience at another optometry did not give me the answers I was looking for.
Dr. Abe and his staffs were the best I have ever experienced with an optometry. Well, I did not try many, but I liked the friendliness of the staff and the knowledge of Dr. Abe himself. Dr. Abe was very patient with my son, tried a lot of different tests to confirm the result, and explained in detail clearly what he found out. Unlike other optometrist who appeared to want to get the test done as soon as possible to go to the next patient, Dr. Abe did not seem in any rush, and his knowledge and experience gave us a lot of confidence to try Ortho-​K treatment that we came here for.
My son’s Ortho-​K experience was painful at the first try in Dr. Abe’s office, but smooth in the second try the next day. And he got used to it thereafter. The result was instant. He could clearly see much better after one night.
The final verdict of Ortho-​K on my son still remains to be seen. But so far so good.

Wow, I didn’t know Dr. Abe’s clinic was on Unilocal.This was my optometry clinic during middle and high school, and never had any problems. Dr. Abe is nice and professional and the staff there are great too. They also have a good selection in their shop, so you never have to go elsewhere to find the right pair of frames.

I can’t believe I had waited this long to review Dr. Abe.
My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Abe for a few years now, and even after moving up to San Mateo, I drove down to see him for periodic check-​ups. He was the first optometrist to ever raise our awareness of glaucoma and advised us to have our eyes furthered examined. (Thankfully, we are okay for now.) He is very detailed in his explanation and is always willing to address our issues or concerns. He communicates via email and has sent us photos and records of our eyes with comments. It’s a relief to know that we are in good hands.
The staff is friendly and seemingly well trained to administer the eye exams. I’ve had no problem making appointments and ordering contact lenses with them.
Last, but not least, this would be a great place for those who prefer to speak in Japanese as at least two of the ladies at the front desk are fluent.

Based on the positive Unilocal reviews, I decided to come here. For an initial appointment, you can conveniently go on their website and request for one.
The staff are all really friendly and some also speak Japanese. They run a lot more thorough tests than my former optometrist… that’s for sure. That’s how they found out that I had stigmatism in my left eye, which I never knew about.
Originally, I came in for an eyeglass exam, but later I changed to a contact exam when I found out that my eyes were a lot worse than I thought. Contacts is more convenient for me than glasses. Dr. Abe was very patient with me in trying various types of contacts. He even had to order me special ones as the stock ones he had were not a good fit for my eyes. After visiting this place like 5 times, I was finally fitted and got my prescription.

I’ve had vision problems since I was very little, so my parents frequently took me to see an ophthalmologist. The 7-​year-​old me was always scared and couldn’t understand why that lady was always giving me so many reading tests. As a result, even up to 10 years later I always felt very stressed when it came to getting my eyes checked.
I started going to Dr. Abe in 2003 and he’s the first optometrist I’ve felt comfortable with. His staff (especially Yoko) is super sweet and accommodating. No complaints at all as I returned year after year for my annual checkups.
Most of their patients I’ve seen do seem to be Japanese or some sort of Asian ethnicity, but their service does not discriminate against anyone whatsoever.
Unfortunately their weekend hours were too infrequent (4 hours on a Saturday, once a month, and usually with a waiting list) for my needs once I made the permanent move up to SF, so I’m now seeing an optometrist in SF. However, I’ve already stuck with Dr. Abe for a good 7 years and would still go back if I’m ever home and in need of an exam.

I have been going to Dr. Abe for more than an year. I have never had such a thorough and patient doctor. He and his staff is very pleasant.
I would recommend this place to anyone.

Dr. Abe is REALLY nice, I enjoyed my initial visit a couple of weeks ago. The exam was top-​notch. Everything was explained to me and I really thought that the Dr. cared enough to allot the proper amount of time. I never felt rushed or like I was just another #.
Got a nice pair of glasses, my first in about 8 years. Insurance covered the bulk of the exam. The prescription is great, I can see clearly now :-)

I’ve never had an eye exam before Dr. Abe, so I am very lucky that my first experience was such a pleasant one, he’s very through. His staff, including Tiffany and Yuko are all very helpful and friendly. I am so grateful for the honest reviews on Unilocal in helping me narrow my search for a wonderful eye doctor. I higly recommend him.

I hate going to the eye doctor, any eye doctor, for me it’s worse than the dentist. So i put it off and put it off, until I lost my eyeglasses. And unfortunately my last prescription was issued in another country 4 years ago, and I’d lost all the paperwork.
Which brings me to Dr Abe. I visited him because of Unilocal.And like all the other Unilocalers say, Dr Abe is extremely patient and kind. I’m a slowwwwww eye patient as my eye condition makes it very difficult for me to determine which pictures are «better or worse.» And Dr Abe was super patient with me through the process.
And when I left his office unsure about the «better or worse» decisions I’d made, he kindly answered my questions by email AND suggested I schedule a follow-​up exam to double check my decision on my prescription.
I have a fairly unusual eye condition in one eye that will probably land me in surgery sometime in the future, but for now he was super patient in helping me get to a correction that worked for both eyes together.
Much to my delight, upon completion of the follow-​up exam, his helpful staff informed me that there was «no-​charge» for my visit. A visit that i might add, I was unfortunately 15 minutes late to.
As long as I live in the area, I’ll be visiting Dr Abe.

I don’t know how good is the doctor because I was never able to get it past his receptionist (by the way name’s Tiffany) — I have never met such a horrible service before at any medical office.
First time I called to make an appointment, just some introductory talk, then — «can I put you on hold»? Well, sure, okay, if you have to. Four minutes (!) of holding then she simply hang up. Yikes. Okay, I am calling back — hello — hello, can I put you on hold? — Hmm, okay (but I think I know already what this means). Guess what happened? Right. 4 minutes of holding, then she hang up.
At this point I decided I can find an optometrist with friendlier people on reception…
So maybe you will be more lucky with them but I was not.

Bar none the best eye doctor I have ever been to. They actually care about you here! I was a little skeptical walking up to the front door because it just says «Optometry» with a not so great look. But inside it is fantastic. Dr. Abe (pronounced ah-​beh) and his whole staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I went through various eye exercises and tests with three of them and they did a very thorough job. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

Super grateful that Yoko fit me in a same-​day appointment. My on-​again, off-​again contact lens irritation got really bad and an intervention was certainly in order.
The last optometrist I saw about this (in fairness to him, eight months ago when perhaps the symptoms weren’t as severe) just said I might have a stye in my eye, and to go home and not wear eyeliner for a while. So I’ve been operating under the assumption that I had a particular stubborn stye, and the fact that I couldn’t feel it at all just meant it was a really mild case.
Enter Dr. Abe, with his contrast dye and microscope whose output is hooked up to a couple of monitors. We reviewed photographs AND hi-​res video together. Go technology. Turns out I don’t have a stye or internal horleodum, I have conjunctivitis and a scratched cornea (wtf, how does one scratch one’s cornea). Makes a lot more sense.
I have officially turned into Grandma Gloria (those of you that know me know that I was well on my way), because I now take 3 pills and 8 eyedrops a day, ALL OF WHICH HAVE TIMING DEPENDENCIES. Taking medicine is now my job. And I have Dr. Abe to thank for it.

I have always had a good experience going to see Dr. Abe and I am so glad I found his office.
One day I woke up with a painful eye ache and after calling a few places close to my house and getting turned away because these places couldn’t take new patients, his office was able to fit me immediately.
I’m actually glad that the other optometrists were unable to take me because otherwise I would have never ended up here. I now get my contacts through this office and have a pleasant experience every time.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. There are always plenty of magazines to read while you wait too.

I have gone to three optometrist since I have lived in the bay area and I don’t know how many since I have been wearing glasses and Dr Abe is hands down the best one I have ever gone to.
His staff is extremely nice and very helpful, they make you feel welcome and do a good job.
For as long as I have been wearing contacts visions for my left eye has always been a little out of focus, Dr Abe was able to find a pair of contacts that worked and now I see clearer then I have ever have before.
I will definitely recommend and refer all of my friends that wears glasses or contacts to come here.

I’ve been going to Dr. Abe for about 6 years now… I referred Summit. I’ve always enjoyed their thoroughness and attention to details. They are extremely courteous and professional.
They are by appointment and are usually easy to make unless it’s the end of the year when all the procrastinators, including my wife, decide to make their appointments. I schedule her appoints for her now. I make my appointment around my birthday just to remember. They do occasionally scheduled Saturday appoints. I believe it’s one Saturday per month.
They definitely do a great job with your concerns and have great equipment to back it. The last time I was in there, Dr purchased a new machine to take a picture of your eyeball to see if there is any signs of macular degeneration.
I originally came into Dr. Abe’s office with glasses, since I had a few bad experiences with contacts. He really took his time and allowed me to try 4 – 5 brands of contacts until I found one I really liked. I also shopped their prices for contact lenses and found my prescription to be the exact same price as if I got it from 1800contacts, so I will continue to order from them directly.

I remember when my vision first started going bad. I was in 8^th grade History class, sitting in the back row and I realized that I couldn’t see the board clearly. Oh, how I denied my near-​sightedness for months. But finally, I had to face reality and accepted that I would need to get glasses. Hey, frames weren’t cute back in the 80’s.
I went to several different optometrists before finding Dr. Abe (pronounced Ah-​be, he’s Japanese), whose office was located next to the art school I used to teach at. My younger brother also went to see him when he realized his vision was going bad — runs in the family it seems.
I felt immediately at ease when I first met Dr. Abe. He has such a friendly and easy-​going personality, and is extremely professional and thorough. His staff is great as well. My visits to Dr. Abe are probably the only doctor visits I look forward to going to.
I got my first pair of cute Calvin Klein frames from his office. In fact, I still wear them whenever I need to give my contacts a rest. People think I look more sophisticated and intelligent in them. Which is a nice compliment and a mean one at the same time if I really think about it.

I came here about three or four years ago. My friend worked across the street and highly recommended Dr. Abe. At the time, my contacts were really irritating, and I had been switching optometrists every year because most of them didn’t seem like what they were doing.
Dr Abe is really professional. They have newer equipment, plenty of gadgets, and most importantly they will listen to your concerns. Also Dr. Abe is very thorough and the place is very clean. It’s a very pleasant experience. Yoko will take care of all your administrative needs, including billing, ordering contacts, etc.
By the way I switched contacts and solutions; my eyes are a lot less irritated. I can feel the difference and see better. Apparently other optometrists weren’t able to par up.
I’ll be coming here every year for my annual eye exam and any other visual needs in the foreSEEable future… ok that was corny…
