Description

Specialties

The Jazz Bakery is «the most prestigious jazz space in Los Angeles» — a serious, no-frills, seven-nights-a-week nonprofit listening room of international renown, where everybody who’s anybody has played; where iconic musicians turn up as regularly in the audience as on the bandstand; where just ascending the stage is a sure sign that you’ve made it into the music’s highest ranks.” (LA Weekly, The House that Ruth Built)

History

Established in 1992.

Founded in 1992 by President and Artistic Director Ruth Price, The Jazz Bakery was the first nonprofit performance space in the country to present jazz concerts twice nightly, fifty weeks a year, for over eighteen years. Originally located in Culver City’s historic Helms Bakery building, The Bakery presented approximately 400 world-class jazz artists per year in an intimate concert setting, to audiences that totaled approximately 25,000 patrons annually.

After losing its longtime home in 2009, the Jazz Bakery has kept the music playing with its Moveable Feast series at prestigious venues across Southern California. A $ 2 million seed grant from the Annenberg Foundation, a gift of land from Culver City, and an offer from renowned architect Frank Gehry to design a new building have made it possible for The Jazz Bakery to pursue the dream of a permanent new home.
