Ayres Hotel & Suites Costa Mesa

My first impression of the hotel was fairly positive, although I was unsure about having a room that looked directly down on the pool. A couple of hours later when the wedding party began around the pool I knew I was right to be concerned. The music and shouting (loud talking and laughter) prevented me from enjoying my room at all. I couldn’t even watch tv. I went to the desk to ask how long the party would go and was told 10:00. I told the 3 clerks at the desk that I would not have stayed here if I had known I would have to put up with the noise and one of them responded, «We never advise our guests when there is going to be an event.» I’m not even sure what to say about that… I won’t be staying here again, and anyone who does needs to ask if there will be a Frat Party going on before they book a room.

I opened the door to my room and noticed something different… it didn’t have any funky stale weird smells. It was clean. The bed was comfortable. The furniture was nice. Only wish the TV was a 55″ but hey, they have two HBO channels. Love that they had two separate mirror/​sink areas (bathroom sink/​wet bar). This came in handy with two of us getting ready at the same time. They also had a mirrored closet and a full length mirror near the door. Beautiful water fountain, nice pool.

So far this place has fallen so far below expectations. At check in — we found out that the pool and recreation areas will be closed all weekend for a wedding (no warning given) and the nearest pool is in another building. When asked to be placed in that building — we were denied. Front desk staff member Jerry was completely unprofessional and curt. Wifi is spotty and rooms leave much to be desired in terms of cleanliness.
Definitely will not be returning or recommending Ayres.

I had heard great things about Ayers Hotels, but I was not impressed. I have NO complaints about the staff. The bed wasn’t particularly comfortable, and the room was dated. It didn’t seem dirty, but it didn’t have a fresh clean feeling either. It had kind of a dated, older feeling. I simply wasn’t impressed and don’t think that I will return. It isn’t an expensive hotel, but it isn’t a bargain either, and I had higher expectations for the chain. The lobby/​common area was pretty and check in process was smooth.

I feel like it deserves 3.75. I’ve stayed here numerous times over the years. Staff is great. The rooms are a little dated or just not my decorating taste. Most rooms have refrigerators and microwaves. It’s a huge plus to me. The outlets are in bad places. It’s 2016. It’s time to get lamps by the beds with outlets or update the electrical. My other complain, I’m 5’9″ and have long legs, but I feel like I’m doing the high jump to step into the tub/​shower. I’m anti bath in a hotel (it’s gross to me), but appreciate the tub for those who like it. A step stool may be smart.
The pool area is quaint and had been fixed up in the past few years. It’s cozy and nice. Highly recommend it.
The bar is small but has a great happy hour and happy hour menu. Food is good.
If you venture out, there are plenty of great restaurants within a block of the hotel. There is a 7 – 11 around the corner and gas station next door. There is even a grocery store about a 15 – 20 minute walk through the neighborhood. Lots of shopping and restaurants about a mile down the road at South Coast Plaza. Airport is minutes away.
It’s a great location but could use a tweak or two of updating.

My recent stay at the Ayres Hotel & Suites was fabulous. Good location. The one King Bedroom Suite was really cozy and clean. Lesley Boal at the front desk was friendly and helpful, hands down. The check-​in process was pretty fast. Thank you kindly for keeping my stay comfortable. My weekend was relaxing. Great place to stay.

The check-​in staff was great; very friendly and professional, made me feel very welcomed.
Our room was very clean and didn’t smell, which is important. hehe.
Beds and pillows are pretty comfy, I didn’t roll over once! It does get pretty hot in the room so I recommend that AC at nght!
Maybe it was because I had a few drinks, but the hotel was a little difficult to get around, so definitely ask for a map at the front desk!

Really enjoy staying here. Clean hotel and professional staff. The happy hour is also a great deal. 4 stars only due to the scarcity of parking spaces, it fills up very quickly.

Was very excited to spend our 5 year anniversary weekend here, since this was the place we got married. We had the best wedding ever, and loved the staff and people. For the most part the stay was fun, loved the spa tub. Got up to go have breakfast, to find out it would be $ 12.99 a person to eat breakfast. How embarrassing to be standing there starting to grab food, to be told it wasn’t included with our room. I think that should have been told to us when we checked it. I could have stayed at a $ 50 a night motel down the street and still received some sort of complimentary breakfast. Super disappointing. We won’t be staying here ever again, and I won’t be recommending this place for weddings anymore either. What a shame.

I can not begin to explain how disappointed I am in this hotel location.
I had high hopes and normal expectations set for them and it was a complete bust.
In Oct of 2015 I had a wedding block with them. Sadly none of my guests used any of the blocked rooms because they all found better deals via
and other companies.
Keeping that in mind let me explain how my family, wedding party and a few guests still all booked rooms with them. No one pointed out they were with the my wedding party to get rooms nearby because that wasn’t a priority to anyone. Everyone just wanted their particular room and whatever days/​nights and that was it.
The day of my wedding I used my parents hotel suite to get dressed and have the wedding party members that were staying at this hotel all be in the suite. Our photographers left at one point to go take pictures of my wedding dress and detail items.
When they came back I heard how some employees of the hotel starting yelling at them to leave the area, they couldn’t be there and pointed out things along the lines of «they didn’t even use their block!» So because no one booked with the wedding block we weren’t allowed anywhere in the hotel?
Again…it’s not my fault their block discount was awful enough that everyone found better deals.
We all were still paying customers and booked quite a few rooms for a few nights there. It’s incredibly rude, unprofessional and embarrassing that their employees acted that way.
I’m a photographer myself and between me and the two photographers I had we will make sure to let every photographer/​vendor we know in the industry to NEVER book any rooms at this location.
I’m still in shock at how ridiculous that was. Thank you so much Ayres for adding unnecessary frustration and embarrassment to my wedding day.
****side note I did not book my honeymoon suite there because they did not allow pets at this location and we had our two dogs with us****

Love their restaurant. Easy substitutions. Beautiful courtyard with a fountain. Staff is really nice. They always are willing to make me a veggie platter. Good French fries. We have a lot of visitors stay here and they all comment how much they look like it.

Well well well… I’m back, and they fixed the wifi! I’ll be looking around to find something else to bitch about

Extremely satisfied with my experience at this hotel. I purchased a Valentine’s weekend stay several weeks early through Hotwire, and was a little hesitant because the category (not the hotel itself) received a 35% recommended rating. I’m glad I took the chance.
The check-​in staff were very courteous and professional, and seemed to care about the experience of their guests (even if it was merely professional courtesy, I appreciate the effort!) The room was in the main building and was easily accessible via elevator or stairs. The room itself came with a small sink and mini-​fridge, which was just perfect for my restaurant leftovers and a few snacks and drinks.
Whenever I stay at a hotel I look for signs of wear and staining, and could find nothing except a few Cherrios behind the TV/​drawer unit (I needed to adjust it to plug in my FireTV Stick). The draperies and fixtures were not dusty or stained at all, and the walls and molding were free and clear of any obvious wear. The couch was largely unused, but no evidence of any cleanliness issues. I brought my own pillow, so cannot speak to the comfort of their pillows, but the bed was very comfortable and just the right amount of firmness for me. The internet worked well and was fast enough for my needs. It is log-​in protected, so some mobile devices may have some issues (my Motorola Moto-​G didn’t like the connection, but laptop and tablet were fine). Air conditioning unit blew cold, but the fan seemed to only have a manual on/​off setting.
There was a small cardio room facility near the floor ice machine, vending machine and microwave (I wanted to heat up something really yummy, but abstained for the other guests’ benefit). There was a bike, elliptical and treadmill with a few mats. Small, but adequate for a quick cardio session. Didn’t explore the weight room, which was also seemingly available elsewhere. The courtyard was partially under construction during my stay, which meant some noise, but otherwise the people who used it seemed satisfied. Didn’t eat at the in-​hotel restaurant. Décor is nice, with seating areas sprinkled throughout the hotel. Room service was attentive and left a message asking if I needed anything (I had a «Do Not Disturb, Please» sign up).
Overall, I would definitely choose to stay here again when in the Long Beach/​Irvine area.

A very «retro» old California hotel with a first class staff. The faux classic paintings adorning every available space adds to the fun. Reasonably priced and a great location

Horrible experience at this hotel. I stayed here with my bf the previous week and we went in the hot tub not knowing hotel hot tubs aren’t a great idea? I mean this hotel looked decent. So the next morning I have huge rashes on my legs, he got the same rashes on his arms and I had a horrible burn down there probably a yeast infection. The hotel manager Susan was very rude would not refund our night or do anything to accommodate us. She just snarled at me on the phone telling me how they do all the meters and it all checked out to be great! Sure I got a yeast infection and huge red rashes because everything was fine! Horrific company and customer service no one gave a shit about what happened to us and never called back. Go stay at the fairmont where the rooms are clean and they actually give a shit about you.

Decided at the last minute to stay overnight in the OC. Called many places to see if they had any last minute deals but this place had the best deal. Lots of good ratings on Unilocal so we took their offer.
This is a very quaint and cozy establishment. The décor is French-​country. It is clean and kept. Check in was a breeze and the Front Desk staff were polite and friendly. No fees for parking (unheard of nowadays) and plenty of it.
We got a King Jr. Suite and the room was roomy. Smelled clean and was very appealing.
There is a beautiful courtyard with plenty of room. I would definitely return.

Although you could walk across the street and practically be on the runway of the John Wayne Airport, this surprisingly charming hotel has more to offer than meets the eye!
The wife and I had an anniversary getaway here for a night and chose it mostly because of the low price we found online. From the outside the hotel has character, but once inside, it feels like you’ve walked into a refurbished castle in Europe! The halls are elegant and there was a lot of care and thought put into the décor of the hotel. Checking in, the staff was super friendly and it didn’t take long for them to check us in.
The room was a bit disappointing, I have to admit. The same elegance of the lobby and various rooms throughout the hotel isn’t present in the room. It seemed a little dated, small, and dingy. The bed was really comfortable though and we got a really good night of sleep. Noise from the airport isn’t too bad at night as the airport closes at 11:00 PM. I wonder if the rooms are like this so you spend more time in the common areas rather than in your room? I don’t know.
Due to the proximity to the airport, I wouldn’t choose this as my first location to stay in the Newport Beach area, but I did enjoy my stay here and if someone gave me a free nights here, I’d be happy to return!

An elegant and vintage stay for an affordable price.
Stayed here for a friend’s bachelorette. The rooms were spacious with enough mirrors to accommodate 4-​women and our makeup needs =)
THE ROOMS: Clean and spacious. The bathroom was clean as well with nicely textured towels. The beds were comfortable however, the inner sheet was a bit itchy on the skin. Certain fabrics itch me but it also itched some of the other girls. Just to be clear, we didn’t wake up with hives and I’m sure the sheets were clean. It was just a texture thing…
There’s a small fridge in the room which was very helpful.
AMBIANCE:
The interior decorations were very vintage meets Victorian. They have nicely framed paintings in the halls, wooden cabinetry in the halls, and Victorian style wallpapers.
They have a courtyard which had a fountain in the middle, chairs around, and cherubim statues which were kind of creepy but it goes with the overall ambiance of the place.
AMENITIES: The lobby was spacious with a good amount of seating for those waiting to check in. There’s a restaurant downstairs which served breakfast in the morning.
It was noted on the website that there’s a bar in the premises and there was but I was disappointed to find that they closed early (before midnight).
BREAKFAST: Our breakfast was not complimentary. We had the option to order individual items or do the buffet. We went for the buffet. They had a good spread of food items (Waffles, bacon, eggs, potatos, muffins, coffee, and juices) The food items didn’t stand out to me. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t’ great either.
I would definitely stay here again but I might opt to explore breakfast spots in the area next time.

We enjoyed our stay here. Nothing spectacular but everything met our needs. Elegant lobby. We didn’t explore the rest of the common areas. The restaurant seems to get good reviews. Although there’s just a single elevator up front and one toward the back, we never had a long wait for one. The room we booked was their 265 sq ft «deluxe» king. I think it’s actually the smallest they offer but it was quite spacious with a sofa bed in the sitting area if you need it.
For the hotel size, it seemed like parking could be an issue but there were ample available spaces. I was wary of possible plane noise since they are right next to John Wayne Airport. It didn’t help that we had a room on the third floor at the front of the hotel. Yes, the planes can be loud but it was surprisingly not annoying at all. Most of the time, I didn’t even notice.
We got a good deal thanks to a promotion from the Costa Mesa Visitors Bureau. Basically, they offered a $ 50 AmEx gift card per night, which the hotel then allowed us to use toward the room upon check-​in. So $ 100 off for two nights. This ended up being a solid stay.

. This place looks, feels, and smells upscale. You get upscale service from the folks at the front desk. This place is the love child of a Las Vegas hotel and a castle.
We stayed here on two separate nights. The first experience was during our short but sweet honeymoon where we were roomed in the main building. The second was more recently for a friend’s wedding — we stayed in the separate building with the suites which was equally clean, spacious, and luxurious. We will definitely look forward to staying here again if we ever back in town.

Let put on AYRES for this HOTEL
I’m probably NOT the person you wanna ask for HOTEL info on where to stay because I don’t tend to stay in too many hotels when I travel. I’m more the vacation rental type person cause you get more bang for your buck, there is more room and it tends to be much cheaper. I DON’T like having to hear the following which most hotels tend to have:
1. Other DURNK hotel patrons stumbling in and making a bunch on noise while I’m trying to sleep at night.
2. Rooms close to the elevator and having to hear that insidious dinging when the elevator arrives to the floor
3. Rooms by ice machines, roads or freeways or pool areas because AGAIN I don’t want to HEAR that racket while I’m trying to sleep.
4. Other hotel guest slamming doors in the middle of the night or early morning which wakes me up
5. Other patrons making too much D*AMN noise in the hallways coming and going
6. Thin walls; I would rather NOT hear you have sex or your television or conversation while I’m in my room.
7. Housekeeping ignoring the door sign, «Please DO NOT disturbed» and STILL knocking to come in in the mornings to supple fresh towels, or toiletries.
I could go on but I’m sure you get my drift. I ONLY know about a handful of hotels that I actually like and feel are worth my time and money and this is one of those places.
AYRES used to be Country Inn and Suites back in the day until they were bought and rebranded in 2001 in California by AYRES Family. There are still some Country Inns and Suites back east but I’m guess having Country in the name wasn’t ringing any bells in California as a upscale type place to stay.
Every location I have been to in California has a NICE upscale European style but is NOT stuffy! It oozes comfort and warmth. At least to me. There is ALWAYS a free breakfast that comes with your stay which sometimes can be a HUGE RED LIGHT for things for a lower scale hotel, but NOT for AYRES! All the rooms are SUITES and have a sofa and coffee table in the rooms and FREE BUFFET BREAKFAST NOT some sad little continental breakfast where you leave still hungry! Now who doesn’t like FREE, especially if you’re travelling with ankle biters. It’s one less thing to have to think about when you’re travelling!
The rooms unlike most hotels are pretty big so there no issue of claustrophobia setting in or being on top one another unless you want to be. Ahah! Most hotel rooms tend to be pretty cramped for my taste. The beds ALWAYS have clean linens, and they are ample towels, pillows and toiletries but if you need more you can just call down to the front desk and ask them to bring up more. Service is ALWAYS FRIENDLY and NICE which of course is a must for me.
What’s even better is it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg for a NICE hotel. If you have AAA you can get a room (depending on the location) for a discounted rate of $ 98 per night plus tax! NOT BAD AT ALL! In fact that is downright CHEAP for today’s standards and there is NO WORRY of roaches carrying away your belongings, running across your face at night or laying eggs in your suitcase only to hatch once you return home! Hahaha! They also have other discount prices for AARP (seniors), military, etc and they have a rewards program in case you stay with them a lot you can get points for I guess an upgrade or free night stay. I’m not really sure on how it works but you can call to find out.
This location has a pool, sauna, and several rooms you can rent out for conferences, or meetings, 2 computers if you need them, a nice lounge lobby area, bar, and there is a wonderful outdoors patios with fountain which is really relaxing to eat breakfast in or dinner. My ONLY issue with this place is that it is a bid of a maze. I got turned around because I entered through the back which was closer to my room and where I parked and the next morning I couldn’t find the breakfast room easily! The signs were not really that helpful to me, but I managed to figure it out!
I would TOTALLY stay here again. I REALLY LOVE this place plus is small so it’s NOT usually over-​run with tourist and tends to be NOT TOO NEAR tourist attractions.
