The Lamp Shade offers quality shades, lamps, finials and home décor accessories. A variety of shades in many sizes, shapes, fabrics and colors are in stock. There are many styles available, from traditional to contemporary, both in shades and new lamps. Unique shades and lamps can also be custom ordered.

Loads of decorative finials («screwy» lamp tops) are available too. Finials come in antique and polished brass, bronze, nickel, glass, wood, jade and porcelain. There are bird finials, elephants, seashells, basketballs, even Buckeye finials for die-​hard OSU fans.

We also sell Root candles, decorative pillows, porcelain and other décor items.

We encourage customers to bring their lamps to try new shades. We work with you to find the best shades for the way you use your lamps, and to make them fit perfectly. Our personal service is second to none. Please come see us soon, and don’t forget to bring your lamps.

History

Established in 1973.

The Lamp Shade was established in Bexley, OH by a decorator who understood the importance of quality lamps, shades and finials (lamp tops) to the overall look and feel of a room. Rita Quinn founded The Lamp Shade to provide unique lampshades to the central Ohio market. Rita passed away in 1988, but her dedicated staff ran the business until Marianne Lannan bought it from Rita’s heirs in 1995.

Marianne moved The Lamp Shade from Bexley to the Short North area of Columbus in 2006. This new central location makes the store even more accessible to many new customers who discover it at Gallery Hops, while attending conventions or just by browsing this eclectic area of shops, galleries and restaurants.

Many customers appreciate the need for quality replacement shades, and know that they can transform their lamps with different shades. So the business continues to thrive, as people from central Ohio and beyond bring us their lamps to select good-​looking shades and finials.

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

Marianne bought The Lamp Shade business in 1995, with no prior lamp, shade or decorating experience. A former computer programmer with an MBA, she was interested in working with the public in a creative, problem-​solving way.

When Marianne talked to a small business accountant about starting a business, he suggested buying an established business instead. Marianne grew up near the lampshade store, and knew it was a unique store with a great reputation for quality products and service. She inquired about its status, and discovered it was for sale. After some investigation into finances, competitors, etc., she decided to buy the business from the heirs of the original owner.

The staff trained Marianne «on-​the-​job». Now she has the knowledge and experience to fit shades to most lamps, old and new. She buys all the shades and lamps in stock, so she knows lampshades!

Marianne and her staff can show you many shades to complement your lamp. They can custom order them too.
