Located in the quaint town of Clifton, Virginia and bordering Bull Run River, Paradise Springs Winery and Vineyard is the closest winery to Washington DC and the first in Fairfax County. Serving as the gateway to Virginia Wine Country, the property features an 1800’s log cabin, which was renovated in 1955 by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. Tastings, tours, wine dinners, and much more can be found at this intimate, family run, destination winery. Come experience the old world country nestled only a stone’s throw from Washington DC.

**Paradise Springs Winery is honored to have been awarded the coveted Governor’s Cup on September 29, 2010 for our 2009 Chardonnay. The award signifies this wine as the BEST white wine made in the state of Virginia.**

History

Established in 2010.

Paradise Springs Winery was founded in 2007 as a family business and their first vintage was crafted that fall, a Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. But the beginnings of Paradise Springs were not without its bumps in the road. In 2008, Fairfax County officials informed the proprietors that the winery would not be permitted on-​site due to their zoning ordinances, stating a Virginia Farm Winery was not an agricultural use. They deemed it industrial/​manufacturing, more suited for an industrial district. Because a vineyard is not allowed to be planted in such district, this classification effectively barred the existence of a Farm Winery throughout the entire county. Not willing to go down without a fight, the owners persevered for two more years in and out of court. Late 2009, a decision came down from the Virginia ABC Board proclaiming Paradise Springs Winery’s right to operate and effectively issued their license. The winery opened its doors to the public on January 16, 2010.

«I joined PSW shortly after our opening in January, 2011, but my love for wine began years ago. As Manager I have many roles, including tasting room management and event coordination, and my roles are always evolving as the business grows. Recently, I also began my pursuit of a master’s degree in Enology, and I am looking forward to the challenges that come with learning to make wine.

I am passionate about my role at Paradise Springs, and couldn’t envision myself anywhere else. I work with some of the best and brightest people I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know. I’m looking forward to our second year of business, and the transition into our new tasting room and production facility on site at the farm!»

We visited on a quiet Thursday afternoon. We were not acknowledged for over 10 mins despite passing several employees. When we finally received attention we were told tastings were at the bar. The woman running the tasting was very distracted, leaving the tasting several times to ring up customers even though there were two other employees just packing boxes right next to her. We were never welcomed, she just began pouring. We had to ask what wines we were being given. Overall we did not like any of the wines on the tasting. We saw they had a Viognier which we love. We asked to taste it and she was rather rude and just told us it was good so we should buy it. I’m not spending $ 30 on a bottle on your word. Overall, the $ 12 tasting fee was high for 7 – 8 wines. Customer service was poor. I will not go back. If they couldn’t handle customers on a slow day (less that 15 customers in the building), I would hate to see how they function on a Saturday. There are many other wineries in Virginia, I would skip this one.

I wish I could give 3.5 stars to this place. It’s kind of off the beaten path, but a very nice location. We went today (date of this review) and it was fairly quiet, aside from the Real House Wives of Clifton. We get in to do our tasting and the server was very high energy (not in a good way). She started pouring the first wine and didn’t say what it was or explained before walking away. It took me engaging to get her going. We tasted 5 or 6 wines. they were ok, nothing to rave home about. They had Vidal Blanc and Viogner, both I’m a huge fan of. I asked if I could taste and she said it’s not part of the tasting and not open, so sorry I can’t. I said well I like both those wines, if I try at least one I’ll probably buy if it like it. Again no with the BS of «my manager» that’s nonsense, because I’ve been to places where they’ll open if you ask nicely, even if you have you pay $ 1. Needless to say, I told I’m not going to spend money on something I didn’t taste. It was a $ 12 tasting, we paid, no tip. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. We went to another winery that gladly let us taste a wine off the list. THATS GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. oh and I bought a wine from the other place. I’ll review them shortly…
Overall, this place is OK, but your mileage may vary. I’m not going back

This review is about our visit yesterday (6÷15÷16)
My girlfriends and I had never been to this winery but have heard good things about it through friends. Paradise Springs is small compared to other winery’s I’ve visited but it is very cute! When we walked into the guest building we were not greeted by anyone. There was a front desk for a greeter but I guess no one was working it. Confused, we walked in to the bar area where this older woman was working. She didn’t really welcome us and was kind of stand off ish. She handed us the wine list and we collectively picked a bottle to share. We asked to taste the wine before purchasing and she only poured a serving for one of us not four. Interestingly, she didn’t ID us either before serving us the wine but we thought nothing of it. So we got our wine and sat outside in the balcony area overlooking the field. A good 30 – 45 minutes passes and we decided to get another bottle. My friend went inside to purchase another but came out empty handed because they wanted our whole group to come back inside so we could get ID’ed. Why didn’t they ID us when we did the tasting and bought our bottle? Not only was it super inconvenient but we had to pick up all our stuff after we had already gotten comfortable. Our group had bought 4 bottles and 2 platters. For the amount we spent I hope they do a better job next time.

2 stars because this winery looked like fun BUT we walked in at 6:25 and was told it was «last call» and that we couldn’t do tastings. Keep in mind that the winery has specified that they are open until 7pm. My fiancé and I assumed this meant that, in fact, we couldn’t do tastings, but that we could buy a glass or a bottle to drink in the expansive lawn. After attempting to purchase a glass, we were told we couldn’t do so once again because it was «last call,» but we could purchase a bottle. So we purchased a bottled — then we asked for glasses. But noooooo — we couldn’t get glasses or drink our bottle we paid for outside because it was «last call» and they refused to uncork the bottle for us. I’m not sure what «last call» means to the employees of this winery, but to me it means I will be given a final chance to purchase whatever I want before the bar closes. Deeply dissatisfied.

Fan of this winery. Located in Clifton, VA, it’s about 35 outside of DC.
Highlights:

This is the perfect, local getaway!
Just under an hour outside of the city, Paradise Springs is a haven for relaxation and serenity. Although I’ve been following this winery since opening, I can’t believe that I had put off my first until just recently.
Even the journey out to the winery was enjoyable once off the gridlock laden highways. Although the narrow back roads twist and turn, you’re surrounded by lush lands and beautiful homes.
Once you get to the winery, there is plenty of room to spread out. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and sprawling space if you’d like to bring a picnic blanket or run around on the lawn with your pup! Just keep in mind that your furry friends will need to stay outside, so please plan accordingly. I was so grateful that the winery had water bowls, but I also should have brought some of my own supplies and goodies for my pup.
Tastings take place inside the beautiful, rustic, lodge-​like indoor space. Since we were looking to just grab one glass and a few bites, we didn’t partake in any tastings this time around, but they looked to be a good time.
If you’re hungry, you can purchase plenty of packaged, wine friendly foods that you can find at your local supermarket. Cured meats, cheeses, crackers, olives and hummus made for a fun and delicious lunch while we sipped our rose, overlooking views of the vineyard.
I will definitely make the trip out here again sooner than later for the peace and beauty of the land alone. The wine was tasty, but I think that it was really the land, scenery and serenity that I will really be coming back for!

I had such a good time at this place. The weather was perfect and there was ample seating throughout the place. There was seating out front and they even had places to sit inside of the winery. The staff was friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure that everything was perfect. Not to mention the scenery was perfect. It is hidden through a cute town and down a scenic path.
We took our own cheese and meats and I’m glad we did because when we got there all the meat platters were sold out. We ordered a bottle of red and white wine. Loved this place and my first experience at a winery.

My husband and I came here on our anniversary, we were in the area and want to find some good wines.
The tasting is $ 12 per person (I think it’s slightly pricey), we tasted 7 wines and my fave is their cabernet franc and my husband fave is mélange.
But we both really like the 2014 sommet blanc too, so we got one bottle and sat outside.
They have a very large picnic area outside so a group of friends or family can come here, get some nice wines, sit outside and picnic.

Paradise found, indeed!
It’s no wonder this oasis attracts folks from all over the DC Metro area. Clifton is a real marvel. It’s only something like 6 miles from where I live, distance-​wise, but it feels like you’re entering an entirely different world! Winding backroads take you through untouched forestry and quaint rural-​feeling life, until you make your way to Paradise Springs Winery.
The winery is beautifully situated on a large plot of land with the tasting room at the top of a steep hill, and picnic tables strewn all throughout. The tasting room itself is quite large and offers a long bar at which to taste wines, plus tables inside to sit if you want to take advantage of the air conditioning.
You can purchase your glass or bottle of wine at the counter, as well as some light foodstuffs (cheeses, meats, olives, etc. They’re the kinds of packaged items you’d find at a grocery store). We bought a whole bunch of stuff, but at the prices that things are offered and the fact that basically you get a grocery store haul out of it, I’d probably bring a picnic on my own next time. We got literally an entire block of cheese and a legit jar of olives, hahaha.
They offer tours of their facility on weekends. I hear it gets pretty nuts on the weekends, but on a weekday afternoon it was perfect. Just a few groups who came through — one birthday party, one group of moms and their little ones, and one couple), and it’s dog-​friendly! (Just not inside the tasting room.)
We tried Nana’s Rose as well as one of the white wines (I can’t remember what it was called, but it wasn’t the Chardonnay… sorry that I am super unhelpful lol) — enjoyed the rose, thought the white was just okay.
After we wrapped up at the winery, it was just a quick 5 minute drive to Main Street in Clifton, where we finished off our wonderful day with some gelato from Peterson’s Ice Cream depot. Oh Clifton, how I love thee. Paradise Springs, I will be back!

This is a perfect winery to visit.
The atmosphere is impeccable. Today it was raining but literally once we arrived it was a perfect sunny day. The wine gods were on our side! Thank you wine gods.
The greenery is beautiful. The drive to the winery is so breathtaking and peaceful. The roads are a bit unsafe so drive carefully. The cars coming the other way have a hard time seeing you and vice versa. So drive slowly and carefully when you get closer to the winery.
This is a perfect picnic spot. You bring your own basket of food. You order your bottles of wine and spend your afternoon chatting and sipping on their bottled wines. They provide you with the wine glasses so no need to bring your own.
However, make sure to bring your own plates, forks and napkins. Also bring some plastic wrap to take your leftovers in.

South Riding, VA
Skip day Monday and Paradise Springs was the last of the three wineries we visited. It was also my favorite of the day. Ed conducted our tasting and I’ll have to say I enjoyed listening to him speak about the wines. He definitely fit the role of wine educator. If you can get away during the week for a tasting, do so. Ed will enhance your experience with his knowledge and charm (he only works Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
The tasting room is cozy and rustic with all the wood accents. The barrel room is striking with oak barrels stacked behind glass. My favorite feature was the covered patio with fireplace that could be used year round. I understand children are not allowed at the tasting bar or on the back patio. The grounds have plenty of room for picnicking outside as well and dogs are welcome there. Live music is offered Fridays, Saturdays and some Sundays. The winery is open 7 days a week and Friday until 9:00 pm.
It isn’t often I enjoy all the wines I am offered during a tasting. The cost of the tasting was $ 12. I really enjoyed every one of the Paradise Springs wines. I fully admit I am not normally a lover of port, but Ed gave us a taste of the Swagger anyway. It was delicious. The aging in the bourbon barrels gave it a touch of smokiness and it was not as sweet as other ports I have tried. Since my husband loved it too, we took a bottle home. The cost — around $ 40 which is very reasonable for a port.
I really enjoyed my visit to this lovely winery and will be back. Next time I may try The Paradise Springs Winery Experience” which is a tour of their production facilities and tasting for $ 25.

I really enjoy this location and their selection of wines. Great place to bring your own lunch and have a picnic. Bar/​tasting area gets really crowded on the weekends. Wines, while very good are VERY over priced at around $ 30 a bottle average.
Despite this, i continue to come back for the ambiance and the wine.

This is my family’s favorite winery. We come here multiple weekends throughout the Spring — Fall and most are wine club members.
Pros —
— Convenient/​central location for Northern VA people
— In the cute town of Clifton
— Large lawn that’s great for picnics
— Ample picnic tables & patio tables for those that don’t have lawn chairs
— Very dog friendly (leash required)
— Solid wine selection
— Some snacks available for purchase, as well (cheese, crackers, hummus, etc)
— Large screened in patio w/​a fireplace for winter or rainy days
Cons —
— Needs more restrooms for busy weekends (should look into renting port-a-potty’s for holidays, like Mother’s Day last weekend)
— A larger food menu would be great

I’m so happy this winery is so close. I went here on my birthday because my boss gave me two complimentary tasting cards. Score! My friend and I packed a picnic and got there soon after it opened.
The tasting was nice and I got a bonus taste of their port, because I really enjoy port with dark chocolate. It was worth for them to sneak me a taste because I bought a bottle to take home. We also bought a bottle of Nana’s Rose to have with lunch.
Lot of picnic tables with plenty of them under the trees for shade. They’ve added more parking beyond the vines.
Wines are a bit overpriced.

We had a great time with the kids and dog. After a nice hike at Hemlock Overlook. This winery has several areas to enjoy. It seemed the kids and parents were outside while the couples primarily enjoyed the grassy areas and tables closer to the main building or the inside. There was live music and a nice indoor lounge area. The staff was incredibly friendly. I enjoyed the 2013 Norton but heard the Meritage is great also. Although the Unilocal reviews did not support the kid friendly atmosphere we found, I’m so glad we tried it out here.

Staff — was way below expectations! Ed was serving our tasting and he seemed totally uninterested. My wife, her college girlfriend, our daughter and granddaughter arrived for lunch in the meadow. We had the place to ourselves except for the staff. I advised them an animal had turned over a trash can and it took over an hour to pick it up!
Wines were fine but over priced.
Ed looked at us like Martians when we told him we were from Myrtle Beach, hopefully he is the day guy and doesn’t work when it is busy!
Day was wonderful and company was great!
Ps: this high class winery, doesn’t accept AMEX!

Came here with some friends that actually live right down the street. I have to be honest, after living in VA and going to a lot of the wineries in the Charlottesville Area, I’m usually not expecting much. Most VA wineries are average at best. There are some good ones out there but most are meh. I have to say, this was a good one. Upon arrival the grounds them self are really nice. A lot of outside space to snag bottles and kick back and relax at a picnic table or in your own chair you bring with.
The tasting room looks brand new and they do offer a good variety of wines. We obviously wanted to do a tasting of the wine. We did have to wait a bit, as the lines were a bit long but that was understanding on a Saturday afternoon. They did provide us with a glass of their Chardonnay while we waited. We went through the tasting of the white and red. The Chardonnay was nice as it was aged in Oak for 8 months. I love oaky chards. This was crisp with a hint of oak. Their rosé was nice as well because it was dry and didn’t have any residual sugars. The Meritage was my favorite red, also the most expensive. It was a blend of a lot of grapes. Overall a solid red.
We ended getting a couple bottles and just hanging out for a while. I did notice that they had a good snack menu at the bar. They did have a nice setup with a line that was specific to purchasing items and the rest of the bar area was for tastings and then purchases.
I will definitely be back here again. It was a Great place to hangout with friends on a nice afternoon.

It is worth noting that if you have time off from work during the week, specifically on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday– you should do a tasting at Paradise with Ed. He is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable folks in the Virginia wine industry– and he is a real hoot! I more than enjoyed my tasting and time spent with him this past Monday afternoon– and always learn some random and interesting set of factoids when in his presence.

Had a great time at a wonderful location. While a 7 wine tasting for $ 10 pushes the edge price-​wise, the quality was such that I can overlook such details. Clifton seems an odd place for a winery, but surprisingly smooth traffic makes it an easy trip from DC.
Paradise Springs only owns 3 acres of vines, which are on their property and used for their ‘estate’ wines. While they lease a lot of acres elsewhere, at least they are all in Virginia.
The building is very swanky. Lots of space outside, plus a nice patio and little sofas and tables inside. They also serve snacks like soup during the winter; definitely a plus for me.
Alison my server was very friendly and a fan of her wine; kudos for washing my glass with wine between the white and red servings. Extra points for sneaking me a taste of both the Norton and Chardonnay Reserve, neither of which were on my tasting menu. I also did a separate bacon & wine tasting in addition to my ‘regular’ tasting, which allowed me a taste of the Swagger port-​style (plus lots of delish bacon-​flavored goodies).
Reds: Lots to love. The 2013 Cab Franc had a nice mouth-​feel and nose; I’d say it was on the high side of ‘medium’ bodied. The 2013 Mélange Bordeaux style had nice color and was very soft. The Swagger port-​style was more sweet that bourbon-​overpowering like other ports, but still good. The Norton was above average. But my favorite was the 2012 Meritage, which had a nice cherry palate.
Whites: the 2013 Chardonnay was a little oaky and buttery, but neither flavor was overly discernable. The 2013 Chardonnay Reserve was nice; I got the oak but not the butter; probably because it only went thru partial malolactic fermentation. The 2013 Viognier (with tropical notes), 2014 Sommerset Blanc dry white blend, and citrucy 2014 Petit Manseng were just OK (but then again I’m not much of a white drinker).
